Paris Olympics 2024: India's Aman Sehrawat bags bronze medal in men's 57kg wrestling
India’s Aman Sehrawat bagged a bronze medal in the men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling category after his win over Darian Cruz of Puerto Rico on Friday (Aug 9) at the Paris Olympics 2024. Sehrawat registered a 13-5win over his opponent and was thesixth wrestler in India’s Olympic history to win a medal at the quadrennial event. The medal for Sehrawat is India’s sixth at the Paris Games while it is the fifth bronze medal overall.

Having faced disappointment in the women’s 50kg category in wrestling when Vinesh Phogat was disqualified, it was Aman who made the nation proud with a bronze medal. The Indian wrestler joins an elite company of KD Jadhav, Sushil Kumar, Ravi Dahiya and Yogeshwar Dutt among male Olympic medalists for the nation. Interestingly, despite losing the semis on technical superiority, Aman was successful in bagging the bronze medal for the nation.
Aman’s success means India now has six medals at the Paris Olympics which includes five bronze medals. The 21-year-old’s success also means India has won a medal in wrestling in the last five Olympics. In 2008 Sushilkumar won a bronze medal and upgraded it to silver atthe 2012 London Games along Yogeshwar Dutt. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, Sakshi Malik clinched a bronze while Ravi Dahiya won a silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics (2020).

In the last 24 hours, India has won a bronze medal in men’s hockey followed by a silver medal for Neeraj Chopra in the men’s javelin throw event. Aman’s win sees the nation match its tally of the London Olympics with six medals and are one medal away from matching the Tokyo Olympics'tally of seven.
India could have earned a medal in wrestling had Vinesh Phogat not been disqualified in the women’s 50kg freestyle category. She was found overweight which made her ineligible for the gold medal match, but could yet bag a prize if she is successful in her appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sports.
