Cricket Ireland creates history in Belfast, defeating world champions India by one run to seal a sensational and historic 2-0 T20I series whitewash.
Cricket Ireland has scripted history in Belfast as they beat the world champions, India, in the second T20I by just one run to inflict a sensational 2-0 whitewash on the number one-ranked T20I team on Sunday (Jun 28). In a massive blow to the Men in Blue, they failed to beat the hosts across two matches. With that, India also conceded their first T20I series after 16 consecutive series wins since the 2024 T20 World Cup. Shreyas Iyer’s T20I captaincy debut fell flat as they now prepare for the marquee five-match series against England, starting July 1.
With almost everyone available for selection, including the uncapped teen sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Team India fielded its best XI for the two T20Is against Ireland, yet lost to Ireland, who were clinical and at their best at home. After shockingly conceding the series opener, India made two changes to their XI for this decisive T20I, bringing in two debutants, seamer Prince Yadav and all-rounder Suryansh Shedge.
Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first. Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Prince Yadav returned with wickets, and so did Shivam Dube (2/25 in 3 overs), restricting Ireland to 154 for eight in the first innings. Harry Tector starred with the bat, scoring a fifty (53), while Benjamin Calitz impressed with his 37.
India’s top order fails again
For the second time in two games, the Indian openers, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, failed to leave a mark, departing inside the first over itself to left-arm quick Jai Moondra. After impressing on his T20I debut in the previous game, he again accounted for Samson, this time trapped in front of the wickets. Abhishek fell inside the same over, also on a first-ball duck, reducing India to one for two.
Shreyas Iyer and Kishan followed soon after, with India losing four wickets inside the Powerplay. Axar Patel and Tilak Varma tried saving face for India's grace, but couldn’t do it for long as Axar got out on 14 before Shivam Dube followed him on 20. Rain interruption did help India, as Tilak reached his fifty, but the required rate had the better of him, as he fell right on 55.

Matthew Hollard was the one who removed all three before Tector pulled off a brilliant last over to deny Harshit Rana (21 off 10 balls) and India a win in the second T20I.
As a result, Ireland beat India by just one run to win the second T20I and clinch the two-match series 2-0.
