It said "At an aggregate level, we believe poverty rates in India could now be in the range of 4-4.5 per cent with almost minimal existence of extreme poverty"
The report also highlighted significant improvements in rural and urban poverty levels over the years, supported by data from the government's Consumption Expenditure Survey.

The poverty estimates may undergo minor revisions if the 2021 census is done and updated rural-urban population data is published. However, SBI Research believes that urban poverty levels could decline even further in the coming years.
It said "It is possible that these numbers could undergo minor revisions once the 2021 census is completed and new Rural Urban population share is published. We believe Urban poverty could decline even further".
The methodology for these estimates starts with the poverty line defined in 2011-12, adjusted for decadal inflation and an imputation factor derived from National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) data. The new poverty line for 2023-24 stands at Rs 1,632 for rural areas and Rs 1,944 for urban areas.
Using this adjusted poverty line and fractile distribution data, the proportion of poverty in rural areas is calculated at 4.86 per cent and in urban areas at 4.09 per cent for FY24.
The report attributed the decline in rural poverty to higher consumption growth among the bottom 5 per cent of the population, leading to a shift in the poverty line.

Days after China declared to create two new counties in Xinjiang, out of which one is made up mainly of Indian territory, India on Friday (Jan 3) responded to the reports, stressing that India has never accepted the illegal Chinese occupation of Indian territory in this area. &nbsp;
Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal &nbsp;while addressing a weekly briefing said that the "so-called counties" fall in India's Union Territory of Ladakh.&nbsp;
"We have seen the announcement pertaining to the establishment of two new counties in Hotan Prefecture of China. Parts of the jurisdiction of these so-called counties fall in India's Union Territory of Ladakh," he said.&nbsp;

As a lower riparian state with established user rights to the waters of the river, we have consistently expressed, through expert-level as well as diplomatic channels, our views and concerns to the Chinese side over mega projects on rivers in their territory," he said.&nbsp;

India reacts to China creating 'so-called counties', says lodged a 'solemn protest' with Chinese side

As authorities in India&rsquo;s Madhya Pradesh state plan disposal of 337 tonnes of waste left after the massive 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy, protests have broken out in the city where the incineration process will take place in the coming months. The toxic waste was shifted through a 250-km-long corridor from the defunct Union Carbide factory to Pithampur in 12 sealed trucks. News agency PTI reported that two men were rushed to hospital on Friday (Jan 3) after they set themselves on fire amid calls for shut down in the town.
The call for shut down was made by &lsquo;Pithampur Bachao Samiti&rsquo; (Save Pithampur committee), arguing that the disposal process risks harming the local environment and people. Pithampur, a major industrial town, has a population of 0.2 million and hosts about 700 factories in three sectors.

Video: Indian Navy officers rescued after falling in beach during rehearsal

The Delhi Police is likely to call in the family members and in-laws of Puneet Khurana for questioning, news agency PTI reported citing sources on Friday (Jan 3). The Delhi-based cafe owner allegedly died by suicide over a dispute with his estranged wife.
Khurana recorded a 54-minute long video on his mobile phone before he hanged himself. The police officials are to visit his home to confirm the facts about the case with his family members and in-laws. They will also speak to his friends, according to news agency PTI.
&ldquo;We are checking all the facts. Multiple teams have been formed to investigate the matter. The teams will question his wife, in-laws and friends,&rdquo; the source added.

The two co-owned the For God's Cake bakery and an eaterie called Woodbox Cafe, which was shut down some time ago. Khurana&rsquo;s family claimed that he was &ldquo;upset with his wife&rdquo;.
According to Khurana&rsquo;s sister, Manika and her family coerced his brother to commit suicide by saying &ldquo;You can't do anything, die by suicide if you dare,&rdquo; news agency ANI reported.

"Many people lived for the country and hugely contributed to the freedom struggle. The BJP is giving legitimacy to those people who have written mercy petitions to the British and taken pensions from them," the MP said.

In a shocking incident, a dispute over loud music between neighbours during the New Year celebration took a violent turn when a man in the Indian capital Delhi was beaten to death.
The incident occurred in West Delhi&rsquo;s Rohini when the 40-year-old man, Dharmender, complained to neighbours about the loud music during the night of New Year. The Police Control Room (PCR) received a phone call regarding the quarrel between the neighbours around 1 am.
When the police arrived, Dharmender was involved in a heated argument with two brothers, Kapil Tiwari, 26, and Piyush Tiwari, 21. Initial investigations revealed that Dharmender had objected to the brothers regarding the loud noise, which led to a dispute between them.

&ldquo;The loud music kept our family awake, so I went downstairs to investigate. My brother followed, thinking he was protecting me. But the situation escalated rapidly. They dragged me to a corner, and one of them brutally assaulted my brother with a stick. His wife and children tried to intervene, but they were powerless to stop the attack. He was left bleeding and battered,&rdquo; Dinesh told TOI.
The victim was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the doctors. He is survived by his wife and three children.

The police investigators are also considering the possibility of whether there have been any disputes between the two parties in the past.

Delhi man beaten to death after dispute over loud music on New Year’s Eve

Three teenagers lost their lives after a train ran over them whenn they were playing a mobile game sitting on the railway track. The harrowing incident took place in east Indian state of Bihar's West Champaran district on Thursday (Jan 2), according to police.
The teenagers were reportedly wearing earphones and sitting on the train track while playing PUBG and did not hear the approaching train. The accident happened near the Royal School at Mansa Tola on the Narkatiaganj-Muzaffarpur rail section, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Mufassil police station.
The victims have been identified as Fukran Alam from Railway Gumti, Sameer Alam from Bari Tola, and Habibullah Ansari.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant refuted claims made by some social media influencers&nbsp; that the coastal tourist location was empty during the Christmas and New Year holiday season.
Sawant said that &ldquo;hotels are full&rdquo; and the influencers are sending a &ldquo;wrong message&rdquo; about the state. He also urged them to visit Goa and see it for themselves.
&ldquo;All the hotels here are full. Some influencers keep saying that tourists are not coming to Goa and are going to other places. They are doing the wrong thing by giving a wrong message about Goa to the people,&rdquo; he told news agency ANI.

During the Urs festival, offering the chadar placed at the shrine of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (Mazar-e-Akhdas) is considered a symbol of devotion and regarded as a powerful form of worship, believed to bring blessings and fullfill vows.

Rijiju shared in a social media post, &ldquo;This gesture reflects the Prime Minister&rsquo;s deep respect for India&rsquo;s spiritual heritage and the values of harmony and compassion.&rdquo;
An annual tradition since 1947 remains where an offering of chadar is given by the prime minister at the dargah during Urs. 
This year, Rijuju will represent PM Modi, and BJP Minority Front president Jamal Siddiqui will present the offering at the shrine and travelling to Ajmer on Saturday (Jan 4), to take part in the ceremony.

<h2 dir="ltr">Recent dispute surrounding the &lsquo;Dargah&rsquo;</h2>
The PM's gesture this year followed controversy after a Rajasthan court accepted a petition from the Hindu Sena, which claims a temple of Lord Shiva exists within the highly respected dargah of Moinuddin Chishti.
The Ajmer Sharif Dargah Committee filed a five-page application in the Munsif Court in Ajmer on December 20, asking the court to reject a petition that claims there was a temple beneath the Ajmer Dargah. 
The next hearing is set for January 24.

He said,&nbsp;&ldquo;This tradition, dating back to 1947, has been upheld by every Prime Minister of the country," Chishti stated. &ldquo;Since assuming office in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently sent a chadar as a mark of devotion and respect. This reflects India&rsquo;s deep-rooted culture of honouring all religions, communities, and Sufi saints," Chishti told the news agency IANS.

Temperatures have dipped drastically in Bihar, with Patna and other parts of the state where the minimum temperatures are predicted to remain between 6 and 11 degrees Celsius for next three to four days. 
In response to this, the state government revised school timings, with all schools operating from 9 am to 4 pm until January 6.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan has been affected by cold weather conditions, with Fatehpur in the Sikar district recording the lowest temperature in the past 24 hours at 3.6 degrees Celsius.

The Supreme Court on Thursday heard a petition related to the ongoing farmers' protest and questioned the Centre for not making a statement that they would consider genuine demands of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=farmers+protest" rel="dofollow">protesting farmers </a>and their doors are open.&nbsp;
The bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, questioned Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.&nbsp;
"Mr Mehta, you have been there for all these days, why your client cannot make a statement that we will consider the genuine and that we are open to genuine grievances of farmers&hellip; Our doors are open&hellip; Why can&rsquo;t the Central Government also make a statement?," Justice Bhuyan questioned.

You have to persuade him from this angle,&rdquo; the bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan told Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh.
The Justices said that shifting him to the hospital does not mean that he will not continue his fast.&nbsp;
There are medical facilities that will ensure that no harm is caused to his life. That is our only concern. His life is precious as a farm leader. He is not aligned to any political ideologies, and he is taking care of only the farmers&rsquo; cause,&rdquo; Justice Kant said.

&ldquo;Your attitude is that there should be no conciliation. That is the whole problem,&rdquo; Justice Kant added.&nbsp;

In the video, Khurana said, "I am about to commit suicide because I am extremely tortured by my in-laws and my wife. We have already filed for mutual divorce on certain terms and conditions. When it comes to mutual divorce, we have signed some conditions in court. We have to fulfil those conditions within 180 days. But my in-laws and my wife are pressurising me with a new set of conditions which are beyond my scope."&nbsp;

In the video, Pahwa was heard saying, "I will go to your locality and create a scene. They keep crying on the phone."&nbsp;
Earlier, another call recording had surfaced in which Pahwa was heard saying, "Tell me what have you asked for. I do not want to see your face. If you come in front of me, I will slap you. If the divorce is going on, will you remove me from the business? Then you will say, if you threaten me, I will commit suicide."&nbsp;
Khurana was heard saying in response, "All of this doesn't matter anymore. Just tell me what you want."
Khurana's family alleged that Pahwa made five demands to settle the divorce with him, including ₹70,000 per month and the lawyer's fee. Pahwa allegedly threatened to send him to jail if her demands were not fulfilled. Khurana's mother claimed that Pahwa used to torture her son who kept bearing everything in silence.&nbsp;

Nimisha Priya, originally from Palakkad, Kerala, moved to Yemen in 2008 to work as a nurse. She had partnered with a Yemeni national Mahdi to open a clinic due to Yemeni laws that require foreign nationals to have a local partner for business ventures. Their relationship deteriorated, with Mahdi allegedly abusing and torturing her, taking her passport, and falsely claiming that they were married.
<h2>The crime</h2>
She was imprisoned in Yemen for killing the Yemeni national, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in 2017. The murder was allegedly in self-defence or an unintended consequence of an attempt to retrieve her passport, which Mahdi had confiscated.&nbsp;
After his death, she and another nurse, Hannan, allegedly dismembered his body and disposed it off in a water tank.&nbsp;
