PM Modi inaugurates Delhi's first 'Namo Bharat' train

Four Maoists and a state police constable were killed in a joint search operation in the South Abujmarh forest area at the Narayanpur-Dantewada district border of Chhattisgarh, said the police on Sunday (Jan 5).
The operation was conducted by the Special Task Force (STF) in coordination with DRG teams from Narayanpur, Dantewada, Jagdalpur, and Kondagaon districts in the Abujmarh area on Friday (Jan 3), said Inspector General of Bastar, P Sundarraj.
Four uniformed Maoists were killed in an intense encounter that began on Saturday evening (Jan 4).&nbsp;
Automatic weapons, including AK-47 and Self-Loading Rifle (SLR), were recovered during the search, said Sundarraj.
Head Constable Sannu Karam of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) also lost his life during the operation.
<h2>CM Sai reacts</h2>
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said that the fight to end the Maoist menace will continue till it is eradicated completely.
&ldquo;So far, there is news of four Naxalites being killed in an encounter between security forces and Naxalites in the south Abujhmaad region bordering Narayanpur and Dantewada districts,&rdquo; Sai said in a post on X.

I pray to God for peace to the soul of the martyred soldier and to provide strength to his grieving family," he said.

<h2>More than 200 Maoists neutralised in 2024</h2>
Over 200 Maoists were neutralised in the year 2024 by the Chhattisgarh security forces.
Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah vowed that the Maoist menace will be eradicated from the country by March 2026.
&ldquo;When Chhattisgarh becomes free of Maoist insurgency, the entire country will be rid of the menace&hellip; Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji&rsquo;s leadership, in the past 10 years, we tightened the noose around Maoists and there was a 73% reduction in deaths of security personnel and a 70% fall in civilian killings&hellip; For the first time in 40 years, the death toll of civilians and security personnel is less than 100,&rdquo; Shah said in Raipur.
&ldquo;With the support of central security forces, the state broke past records and neutralised 287 Maoists in the past year, arrested 1,000 and got 837 to surrender,&rdquo; he added.
&ldquo;The state&rsquo;s leadership, chief minister and home minister pledged to eradicate Maoists and the govt of India is also committed to support your pledge that, together, we will completely eliminate Maoists from Chhattisgarh by March 31, 2026,&rdquo; the Union home minister vowed.

New Delhi: Maldives defence minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon will be visiting India next week, on January 7th and 8th, a visit that comes just days after the visit of Maldives foreign minister Abdulla Khaleel. This will be the first-ever visit of Maldives' Defence minister to Delhi since the current Muizzu government took charge in November 2023, and it comes even as ties continue on a positive trajectory. Confirming the visit, Maldives foreign minister Khaleel in an interview with WION on Saturday (Dec 4) said that the visit will help in enhancing "understanding for both nations in the security area".&nbsp;

The visit of the Maldives defence minister is significant since the Muizzu government had called for the removal of Indian military personnel from the country, something that was his election promise. This was part of his broader pledge to ensure no foreign military presence on Maldivian soil. The Indian military personnel were involved in manning the Indian assets kept in the country for humanitarian assistance. After a number of rounds of talks, the military personnel were replaced by civilian technical staff to operate the aviation platforms.
Despite the demand for troop withdrawal, defence dialogues and cooperation agreements have continued. The fifth round of the India-Maldives Defence Cooperation Dialogue was held in September 2024, focusing on bilateral defence cooperation and the stability of the Indian Ocean Region. With the visit of the Maldives defence minister, ties are expected to gain new momentum in the defence domain. India has been instrumental in training Maldivian National Defence Force (MNDF) personnel. Point exercises like "Ekuverin" are part of regular military engagements between the two countries.

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) issued an advisory on Sunday (Jan 5), urging passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport.
&ldquo;While landings and take-offs continue at Delhi Airport, flights that are not CAT III compliant may get affected,&rdquo; the airport authorities posted on X.&nbsp;

A senior police officer who wished to remain anonymous said that a Starlink device appeared to have been smuggled from the state of Myanmar. The officer also confirmed that Starlink worked in areas near the Myanmar border.
One leader from the Meitei separatist militant group, the People&rsquo;s Liberation Army of Manipur (PLA), said that Starlink devices had been used by the group to access the internet inside Manipur when it had been cut by the authorities during flare-ups of violence.

Former Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh Lovely has been fielded from the Gandhi Nagar seat in east Delhi, replacing incumbent BJP MLA Anil Bajpai.
Bajpai had defeated Lovely from the seat in the 2020 polls.
Tarvinder Singh Marwah, a three-time former Congress MLA from Jangpura who joined the BJP in 2022, will contest from the same seat.

Chidambaram joined the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in 1962 and rose to become its director in 1990.
In 1993, he helmed the country's nuclear programme as chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and as secretary in the Department of Atomic Energy, a post he held till 2000.
Post retirement, he was appointed as the principal scientific advisor (PSA) to the Government of India in 2001, a post he held till 2018.
He also served as chairman of the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) (1994-1995).
As PSA, Chidambaram steered India's forays in the fields of nano-electronics, implemented the National Knowledge Network, and set up Rural Technology Action Groups (RuTAG) to find rural applications for advanced technologies.
He also championed initiatives in areas such as energy, healthcare and strategic self-reliance, and steered numerous projects that significantly advanced India's science and technology landscape.

Chidambaram will be best known for his contributions to India's nuclear weapons programme with which he had been associated since 1967, when peaceful nuclear explosion technology was much talked about globally.
He represented India at various global conferences organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
As part of Operation Smiling Buddha&mdash;the 1974 nuclear tests&mdash;Chidamaram was known to have personally brought the plutonium from Mumbai to Pokhran in Rajasthan.
He had famously donned army fatigues along with the then Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) chairman APJ Abdul Kalam while working on the Pokhran-II tests&mdash;dubbed Operation Shakti&mdash;in 1998.
Chidambaram was at the helm of India's atomic programme when five nuclear tests were conducted on May 11 and May 13 in 1998.
The then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared India as a nuclear weapons state.
Among the five nuclear tests was also the thermo-nuclear device, popularly known as the neutron bomb.
Vajpayee's visit to ground zero in Pokhran days after the nuclear tests were conducted also was a testimony to the fact that there was no radioactivity contamination at the site.
Over a decade later, when some scientists associated with the 1998 nuclear tests questioned the efficacy of the thermo-nuclear device, Chidambaram and his successor Anil Kakodkar led a stout defence of the outcome.
Born on November 12, 1936, in Chennai, Chidambaram did his initial schooling at the Sanatan Dharam High School in Meerut. From eighth standard onwards, he studied at the PS High School at Mylapore in Chennai and graduated from the Presidency College.
Chidambaram did his postgraduate studies at Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru.
He was honoured with prestigious accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1975 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1999. He also received honourary doctorates from several universities and was a fellow of eminent Indian and international science academies.
He is survived by wife Chella and daughters Nirmala and Nithya.
"Dr Chidambaram was a doyen of science and technology whose contributions furthered India's nuclear prowess and strategic self-reliance. His loss is an irreparable one for the scientific community and the nation," Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, said.

An Indian soldier of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) died by suicide after shooting himself with his service rifle at the Surat International Airport on Saturday (Jan 4). He shot himself inside the washroom of the airport in the afternoon. The 32-year-old soldier named Kishan Singh was stationed at the airport as part of his CISF duties. Police said that he shot himself in the stomach. Police Inspector NV Bharwad said, "He was rushed to a private hospital where the doctors declared him dead."&nbsp;
The motive behind the suicide is under investigation, police said. The incident caused panic among the staff at the airport and the washroom was quickly cordoned off for investigation by the authorities.&nbsp;

<h3>Suicide rate among CISF personnel</h3>
The incident came just days after the CISF announced that there was around 40 per cent decline in suicides of its officials. The suicide rate in CISF soldiers was 25 per cent in 2023 and 15 per cent in 2024.&nbsp;

Police said that he shot himself in the stomach. Police Inspector NV Bharwad said, "He was rushed to a private hospital where the doctors declared him dead." The motive behind the suicide is under investigation, police said. The incident caused panic among the staff at the airport and the washroom was quickly cordoned off for investigation by the authorities. Tushar Singh would then use these pictures to blackmail those women and ask for money. He would also threaten to upload those pictures and visuals on social media or dark web if his demands were not met.
Police said the accused befriended more than 500 women on Bumble and over 200 on Snapchat and WhatsApp. Over the period, he accumulated lots of personal data and pictures of the victims.
Tushar had a free run until a second-year student from Delhi University filed a complaint with the Cyber Police Station on December 13 last year. She had connected with the fake profile created by Bisht in January last year. When, the accused started using her personal photos for blackmail purposes, the woman approached Delhi police and filed an FIR.
An investigation was launched and later police raided Tushar&rsquo;s house in east Delhi. The police also retrieved over 60 WhatsApp chat records with women from Delhi and nearby regions. The probe is underway.

The court reiterated its ban on barium nitrate, a crucial ingredient in firecracker manufacturing, and imposed additional restrictions on joined crackers.
Business owners in Sivakasi reported a 30 per cent reduction in production due to these limitations.

Mukesh&rsquo;s elder brother Yukesh on January 2 filed a missing person report with the police. Following mobile tracking, police were able to locate the TV journalist&rsquo;s dead body on the contractor&rsquo;s property.
In his complaint, Yukesh highlighted that the journalist had recently reported on alleged irregularities in the construction of a road from Gangaloor to Nelasanar village. The media reports had prompted a government investigation into the construction project. The police complaint further mentioned threats to Mukesh&rsquo;s life from three individuals, including contractor Suresh Chandrakar. Police have taken several suspects into custody now.

Mukesh had a decade of experience working as a journalist. He worked as a stringer for a TV news channel and ran a popular YouTube channel named &lsquo;Bastar Junction&rsquo;. In 2021, he is believed to have played a key role in helping secure the release of a security personnel abducted by Maoists. Mukesh was known for his brave reportage on Naxal attacks, encounters, and other issues affecting Bastar.
A police statement said the details of Mukesh&rsquo;s post-mortem report are awaited.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai condemned the murder of the journalist, calling it &ldquo;an irreparable loss for journalism and society.&rdquo;
&ldquo;The news of the murder of Bijapur's young and dedicated journalist Mukesh Chandrakar ji is very sad and heartbreaking,&rdquo; he said.
The CM added that the culprits would be brought to justice and would be given harsh punishments.

Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam will visit India on January 15, which coincides with 60 years of India-Singapore ties. During the nearly three-day visit, he will have high-level engagements in Delhi, including meeting President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Singapore President will also travel to India's Odisha state.
Ahead of the visit, the Singapore High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong, met Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in December.
