In October this year, the Canadian PM accused the Indian government of making a "fundamental error" by supporting criminal activities in Canada.

<h2>What is SPADEX? </h2>
SPADEX stands for Space Docking Experiment, and it is a crucial technological feat that would enable India's future space missions. India hopes to build an independent space station by the year 2035, and the first module (component) of this space station is meant to be launched in 2028. Space stations are built by autonomously assembling various modules while they circle the Earth. SPADEX is India's maiden attempt at space docking, which is&nbsp;the process of coupling two satellites into a single unified entity. India's Chandrayaan-3 Lunar sample return mission will also involve highly sophisticated space docking. So far, only the US, Russia, Europe, and China have mastered space docking technology.

<h2>Applications of space docking </h2>
Docking establishes a mechanical link between one orbiting spacecraft and another equally sized or larger orbiting body. When astronauts travel to the space station, the craft that carries them has to dock with the space station, following which the crew can move to the orbiting lab-cum-accommodation. Cargo is also delivered to the space station in a similar fashion. Likewise, docking can enable the transfer of fuel between two spacecrafts, thereby extending the life of the recipient craft. 
<h2>How will ISRO execute SPADEX?</h2>
The primary objective of the SPADEX mission is to develop and demonstrate the technology needed for rendezvous, docking, and undocking of two small spacecraft - SDX01, which is the Chaser, and SDX02, the Target. Each satellite weighs 220 kg, and will be hurled into a circular orbit that is 470 km above the earth's surface.

At the time of the ejection, the final stage of the PSLV rocket will be utilised to give a small relative velocity between the Target and Chaser spacecraft at the time of separation from the launch vehicle. Simply put, the target satellite will be travelling slightly faster than the chaser. This incremental velocity will allow the Target spacecraft to build a distance of 10-20 km with the Chaser.
Gradually, the satellites will autonomously reduce the distance between themselves by adjusting their respective velocities. From 20 km, the inter-satellite distance would be lowered to 5 km, 1.5 km, 500 m, 225 m, 15 m, and 3 m, ultimately leading to the docking of the two spacecraft. After successful docking and unification, electrical power transfer between the two satellites will be demonstrated. SDX01, the Chaser, carries a High-Resolution Camera (HRC) with photo and video capabilities. This is a miniature version of the surveillance camera developed by ISRO's Space Applications Centre (SAC).
SDX02, the Target, carries a Multi-Spectral Payload (MMX) used for natural resource monitoring and vegetation studies. It also carries a Radiation Monitor, which will measure radiation doses encountered in space, which will help suitably plan and execute India's homegrown Gaganyaan astronaut missions. 
<h2>Why is space docking so complicated? </h2>
When a chaser spacecraft is approaching the target spacecraft, the relative velocity between the two (the&nbsp;difference in velocity between the two) must be controlled very carefully. If the relative velocity is too high, the docking attempt can fail, causing damage or collisions. If it is too low, it may take too long to complete the approach, which could lead to fuel inefficiencies or mission delays.
When the spacecraft docks, their relative velocity must be near zero. This means that the two spacecraft must be moving at the same velocity and in the same direction at the time of docking to ensure a smooth connection without any impact forces. This requires careful coordination and manoeuvring, all done fully autonomously.

ISRO successfully launches PSLV SpaDex: All you need to know about the space docking mission

India's space agency, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), launched its year-end mission: the "Space Docking Experiment" also known as SpaDex, successfully on Monday (Dec 30).

He added that following the cremation, Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited the family at their residence. "After discussing with them, it was felt that since the family did not get any privacy at the time of the cremation and some extended family members could not reach the pyre site, it would be appropriate to give them some privacy for the Phool Chunana and the immersion of the ashes which is an emotionally painful and difficult ceremony for close family members," Khera said.

Congress even denied the Bharat Ratna to Dr Manmohan Singh. This is their true face."

Delhi's Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, in season's greetings to the Chief Minister Atishi, took a dig at the ruling Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal. Saxena said that he was "hurt" after Kejriwal called Atishi a "temporary chief minister." In a letter to Atishi, the L-G wrote, "There is no such post in the Constitution, and it is a reprehensible neglect to the concept of democracy in the Constitution of Babasaheb Ambedkar." He claimed that Kejriwal's remarks were an insult to the Indian president who appointed her.&nbsp;
He further said that everyone knows the "circumstances" she was appointed in. Saxena listed down multiple areas where the Delhi government has failed and said that although Kejwriwal has admitted his government's shortcomings, the ultimate blame for the failure will be borne by Atishi. Kejriwal said that the registration process for the scheme will begin on Tuesday. Kejriwal said that on Tuesday, he would visit the Hanuman Mandir in Delhi's Connaught Place to oversee the registration process of the priests.&nbsp;

But during the lathi charge, Kishore allegedly left the protest area, which sparked fury among the students. When he came back, he met with students who demanded that he&nbsp; leave amid chanting of slogan "Prashant Kishore, go back."&nbsp;

We will also look into using whatever legal options are available... To avoid such a situation, we request the government to take a positive decision," he said.&nbsp;

Life hit a pause at several places in Punjab as farmers staged a 'bandh' against the central government over their demand for a legal guarantee of a minimum support price for their crops.

As a precaution, the Indian Railways cancelled more than 200 trains,&nbsp;including Vande Bharat and Shatabdi, and&nbsp;suspended operations of some trains on routes across Punjab.
<h2>Commuters affected</h2>
The bandh was observed from 7 am to 4 pm, and it was called over a week ago by Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha over the Centre not acting on the farmers' demand for a legal guarantee on MSP.
According to reports, the protesting farmers observed sit-ins at various places, including the Dhareri Jattan Toll Plaza. This affected the traffic movement at the Patiala-Chandigarh National Highway.
In Amritsar, the city where the famous Golden Temple is located, hundreds of farmers assembled at the city's entry point. Talking to reporters, farmers' leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said that essential services would be allowed to continue as usual. He also said that anyone travelling to and from the airport, going for a job interview, and essential services would be allowed to operate as usual.

"We are seeing a successful bandh. Train services are also completely suspended and no train is entering Punjab," Pandher claimed.
The impact of the bandh was felt in several neighbouring areas of the state, including Ambala. Hundreds of daily commuters travelling from Ambala to Chandigarh, Mohali, Patiala, and other nearby cities in Punjab were impacted due to the shutdown.
Buses had to take alternate routes to travel from Ambala to Chandigarh, as they needed to navigate a section of the national highway that runs through Punjab.

India&rsquo;s farmer unions from the northern state of Punjab have threatened to launch major protests on December 30 starting 7 am to 4 pm local time. Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) (SKM-NP) said their call for &ldquo;complete shutdown&rdquo; (Punjab Bandh) is aimed at disrupting road and rail traffic. The decision was taken following a meeting held by farmers&rsquo; leaders at the Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana on Thursday (Dec 26).
There are reports that supply of milk, fruits, and vegetables may get disrupted until the protest ends on Monday evening.

According to Sarwan Singh Pandher, the leader of the two farmers&rsquo; unions, traders, transporters, employees unions, toll plaza workers, labour, ex-servicemen, sarpanches, and teachers' unions, social and other bodies, are expected to support the call for &ldquo;Punjab bandh&rdquo;.
It is to be noted that farmers associated with SKM (Non-Political) and KMM have been staging protests against the central government of PM Narendra Modi for the last 11 months since February at Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana.
A group of 101 farmers made three attempts to enter Delhi on foot on December 6, December 8, and again on December 14, but were stopped by Haryana police. The farmers, meanwhile, have also announced their plans to hold a "Kisan Mahapanchayat" at the border point on January 4.

Punjab bandh: Indian farmers call to disrupt road, rail traffic on Dec 30

The Indian Space agency has commenced the 25-hour countdown to the 22:00hrs, 30th December, Monday, launch of the PSLV-C60 mission that will be carrying the SPADEX (Space Docking Experiment) satellites to orbit. The countdown timer began ticking at 21:00hrs on Sunday, WION has learnt. Countdown is a critical pre-launch phase when comprehensive health checks of all rocket and satellite systems are carried out. Fuel filling in the liquid-propelled stages of the launch vehicle is also carried out during the countdown phase. In this case, the PSLV rocket's second and fourth (final) stages are liquid-propelled ones.&nbsp;

<h2>What is SPADEX?&nbsp;</h2>
SPADEX stands for Space Docking Experiment, and it is a crucial technological feat that would enable India's future space missions. India hopes to build an independent space station by the year 2035, and the first module (component) of this space station is meant to be launched in 2028. Space stations are built by autonomously assembling various modules while they circle the earth. SPADEX is India's maiden attempt at space docking, which is the process of coupling two satellites into a single unified entity. India's Chandrayaan-3 Lunar sample return mission will also involve highly sophisticated space docking. So far, only the US, Russia, Europe, and China have mastered space docking technology.&nbsp;
<h2>Applications of Space docking&nbsp;</h2>
Docking establishes a mechanical link between one orbiting spacecraft and another equally sized or larger orbiting body. When astronauts travel to the space station, the craft that carries them has to dock with the space station, following which the crew can move to the orbiting lab-cum-accommodation. Cargo is also delivered to the space station in a similar fashion. Likewise, docking can enable the transfer of fuel between two spacecrafts, thereby extending the life of the recipient craft.&nbsp;

However, the walking robotic arm is an attempt at creating a walking robotic arm that moves around like a worm.
"In the microgravity environment of space, every free object floats. Therefore, we wanted to build and demonstrate a robotic arm that can walk around in space. We have placed a few grappling points on the experimental platform and the robotic arm will be connected to one such point. On command, the robotic arm can move like a worm - if the tail is now attached to one grappling point, its head can move to the next grappling point and attach itself over there. Once the head is attached to a grappling point, the tail can detach and move freely. Therefore, with multiple grappling points placed throughout the proposed Indian space station, we can try and use a 'walking robotic arm' to move around and carry out various functions, including the operation of systems, performing repairs, etc.," Padmakumar, the Director of ISRO's IISU told WION.&nbsp;
He added that this 1-metre-long robotic arm is specifically developed for the space environment and cannot be used on Earth. According to him, this walking robotic arm could serve various purposes in the future, such as performing repairs inside and outside the space station.

<h2>Debris Capture Robotic Manipulator</h2>
Developed by ISRO's Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, which focuses on developing space transportation systems, the objective of this experiment is to demonstrate the capturing of tethered (tied, but free-floating) debris using a robotic arm. Once in space, the robotic arm will perform 'visual servoing' (a control technique that uses visual feedback from a camera to guide the movement of a robot) and capture the tethered object that is freely floating in space.&nbsp;
"There are various applications of being able to capture an object in space using a robotic arm. It can be deployed to capture pieces of free-floating space debris; it can be used to capture a satellite, repair it, carry out refuelling of a satellite," Dr. Unnikrishnan Nair, Director of ISRO's VSSC told WION. According to ISRO, this robotic arm will be capable of capturing free-floating debris and refuelling tethered and free-floating spacecraft in future POEM missions.
<h2>Lead Exempt Experimental System (LEXS)</h2>
Lead has been traditionally used in soldering (joining pieces of metal or wire together using a mixture of metals that is heated and melted). The primary reasons for using lead in soldering include its desirable properties such as low melting point, reliability, and ease of use, which make it suitable for a variety of applications across electronics, aerospace, electrical wiring, etc.&nbsp;
However, despite its effectiveness, the use of lead in soldering has been increasingly restricted due to the health hazards associated with lead exposure and the environmental concerns. 
The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)&nbsp;directive, which was adopted by the European Union in 2003, restricts the use of lead and other hazardous substances in electronic products.
ISRO's VSSC has developed a DC-DC Converter using lead-free (RoHS-compliant) components and processes. The objective is to demonstrate and assess the reliability and functionality of a RoHS-compliant system in a microgravity environment. 
"Our goal is to test this new system in the harsh conditions of space. Once it is proven to work in space, it can be adopted in our processes on earth as well, thereby improving our compliance with electronics industry-approved practices," Dr Unnikrishnan Nair, Director, VSSC, explained to WION.&nbsp;
<h2>Compact Research Module for Orbital Plant Studies (CROPS)</h2>
The CROPS payload, developed by VSSC, is envisioned as a multi-phase platform to develop and evolve ISRO&rsquo;s capabilities for growing and sustaining flora in extraterrestrial environments. 
Designed as a fully automated system, a week-long experiment is planned to demonstrate seed germination and plant sustenance until the two-leaf stage in a microgravity environment. The experiment plans to grow eight cowpea seeds in a closed-box environment with active thermal control. 
Passive measurements, including camera imaging, O2 and CO2 concentrations, relative humidity (RH), temperature, and soil moisture monitoring, are available for monitoring plant growth.&nbsp;
"Plant growth in the microgravity environment of space is drastically different from that of Earth. On Earth, we have gravity, whereas in space, the plant's shoot need not be against gravity. This is our attempt at space farming. This will be of great use when we have our own functional space station with astronauts on board," Dr. Unnikrishnan Nair, Director of ISRO's VSSC, explained to WION.

On Saturday, while it admonished the Punjab government, the Supreme Court also indicated the possibility that Dallewal may have not been allowed to be taken to a hospital by other farmer leaders.
Responding to it, Dallewal, in a video message, said, "I am sitting on a fast. Who gave this report in the Supreme Court and who spread this misconception that I have been kept hostage, where did such a thing come from?
He added, "Seven lakh farmers of this country have committed suicide due to debt. To save farmers is necessary, therefore, I am sitting here, I am not under anyone's pressure."

Farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohar said Dallewal may also speak at the Mahapanchayat.
Dallewal had earlier said he would not break his fast till the government agreed to the farmers' demands.
On Saturday, in an unprecedented hearing, a vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and Sudhanshu Dhulia gave the Punjab government time till December 31 to persuade Dallewal to shift to a hospital, giving it the liberty to seek logistical support from the Centre, if the situation warrants.

Punjab farmers call for 'Kisan Mahapanchayat' on January 4

Officers from India&rsquo;s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided the residence of an official from economic intelligence agency Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the hill city of Shimla. News agency PTI reported that the raid came after the ED official was caught accepting bribe money from a local businessman during a CBI operation but managed to evade his arrest and fled with the cash worth INR 55 lakh ($64,000).
According to CBI officials cited by PTI, the accused ED officer an assistant director in Shimla, along with his banker brother Vikas Deep, had travelled to Delhi to collect the money in cash from the businessman, who had been facing a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The businessmen had filed a complaint against the ED officer, alleging extortion. The Chandigarh unit of the CBI, in response, set up a plan to nab the ED officer red handed.
However, the plan failed as the ED officer managed to escape from the scene with cash in his vehicle. His car was later seized from the local ED office. The officials said that cash worth INR 1 crore ($120,000) was also recovered. Meanwhile, the brother of the ED official was detained and presented before a court. He is now being questioned for his role in the extortion case.

'Centre insulted Manmohan Singh', Rahul Gandhi slams BJP over funeral site

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi has accused the central government of blocking the new welfare schemes - Mahila Samman Yojna and Sanjeevani - launched by the party. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal has claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is not allowing the implementation of the schemes and has also threatened to obstruct other such initiatives.
Kejriwal's allegations came after the Lieutenant Governor (LG) Vinai Kumar Saxena ordered a probe into AAP's schemes ahead of the state election.&nbsp;

Kejriwal further said that the BJP will stop all welfare schemes like free electricity, free water, and free travel for women in buses, launched by AAP.
"If you elect BJP, you will have to leave Delhi. You won't be able to survive in this city. BJP does not want to give anything to the people of Delhi. They &nbsp;(BJP) want to deprive you of all the free schemes," said Kejriwal while speaking at a press conference in Delhi on Saturday (Dec 28),&nbsp;
Under the new scheme - Mahila Samman Yojna -&nbsp; AAP has promised to give ₹2,100 ($24.5) to all women above 18 years along with free health treatment to all Delhi voters aged 60 and above, if AAP wins the upcoming assembly election in Delhi to be held next year.
Kejriwal also dragged Congress into the matter alleging that the party has joined hands with BJP in stopping his party (AAP) from implementing the schemes. He accused that the enquiry by the LG came after a complaint was made by Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit.&nbsp;

The 70-year-old farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, has been on a fast-unto-death at the Khanauri border point between Punjab and Haryana since November 26. He has been demanding the Centre to accept farmers' demands, including a legal guarantee for the minimum support price of crops.&nbsp;

Manmohan Singh Funeral: Last rites held at Nigambodh ghat in Delhi

The Indian national capital Delhi was lashed by showers throughout Friday (Dec 27), recording 41.2 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours up to 8:30 am on Saturday (Dec 28). This is the highest single-day December rainfall in the past 101 years, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The mortal remains of Dr Manmohan Singh have reached Nigambodh Ghat for last rites. His last journey began from the AICC headquarters on Saturday morning after Congress leaders paid homage to their departed leader.
The flower-bedecked vehicle carrying the mortal remains of Singh left the Congress headquarters in a procession amid chants of "Manmohan Singh amar rahe".

The former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh's mortal remains will be kept at the Congress headquarters for an hour before his final journey. His last rites will be conducted at Nigambodh Ghat with full state honours.

Manmohan Singh Funeral: Mortal remains to be transported to Nigambodh Ghat soon

The mortal remains of former prime minister Manmohan Singh have been brought to the AICC headquarters, where top Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi paid their last respects to him.
Singh's mortal remains were brought to the Congress headquarters from his 3, Motilal Nehru residence in a flower-bedecked vehicle amid tight security. The procession reached the AICC office a little before 9 am.
Singh's wife, Gursharan Kaur, their three daughters and other relatives, were also present. Kaur also paid her last respects by laying a wreath.
Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot, Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and several ex-Union ministers were among those who paid tributes to the former PM.&nbsp;Congress general secretaries K C Venugopal and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar, and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu were also there.

Manmohan Singh Funeral: Ex-PM's mortal remains brought to AICC headquarters

The Delhi Police has issued an advisory urging people to avoid taking several major routes on roads in the national capital, ahead of the funeral of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.
The traffic advisory outlines restrictions and diversions on major routes in New Delhi, urging the public to instead use public transport to help ease congestion.
"The dignitaries of many foreign countries and other VIPs/VVIPS and the general public will visit Nigambodh Ghat on the occasion of the state funeral of late Dr Manmohan Singh, Former PM of India on December 28, 2024," Delhi Traffic Police said in its advisory on Friday.
According to the advisory, diversion points include Raja Ram Kohli Marg, Rajghat Red Light, Signature Bridge, and Yudhister Setu. Traffic restrictions, regulations, and diversion may be imposed on Ring Road (Mahatma Gandhi Marg), Nishad Raj Marg, Boulevard Road, SPM Marg, Lothian Road, and Netaji Subhash Marg from 7 a.m. onwards, likely till 3 p.m.
The advisory advises people to avoid the mentioned roads and stretches, as well as the area where the procession will take place. Commuters going to Old Delhi Railway Station, ISBT, Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, and Tis Hazari Court are advised to leave with sufficient time to accommodate possible delays on the route.
