The Indian national capital Delhi was lashed by showers throughout Friday (Dec 27), recording 41.2 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours up to 8:30 am on Saturday (Dec 28). This is the highest single-day December rainfall in the past 101 years, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
For the whole month of December, this is the highest rainfall witnessed in the last 15 years.
Amid severe cold conditions, the mercury dipped down to 14.6 degrees Celsius in the city, according to IMD. 
The total monthly average rainfall for December stands at 42.8 mm, the highest rainfall for December in the last 15 years, according to IMD data. &ldquo;The cumulative 24-hour rainfall ending at 8:30 am today is the second-highest since 1901 at Safdarjung. December's monthly rainfall is now the fifth-highest, said an IMD official.&nbsp;

The IMD expects cloudy skies with intermittent showers for Saturday (Dec 28) accompanied by fog during the evening. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 15&deg;C, while the minimum could be around 12&deg;C. Visibility is expected to drop, with light to moderate fog wrapping the city and surrounding areas.&nbsp;

Manmohan Singh Funeral: Mortal remains to be transported to Nigambodh Ghat soon

The mortal remains of former prime minister Manmohan Singh have been brought to the AICC headquarters, where top Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi paid their last respects to him.
Singh's mortal remains were brought to the Congress headquarters from his 3, Motilal Nehru residence in a flower-bedecked vehicle amid tight security. The procession reached the AICC office a little before 9 am.
Singh's wife, Gursharan Kaur, their three daughters and other relatives, were also present. Kaur also paid her last respects by laying a wreath.
Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot, Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and several ex-Union ministers were among those who paid tributes to the former PM.&nbsp;Congress general secretaries K C Venugopal and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar, and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu were also there.

Manmohan Singh Funeral: Ex-PM's mortal remains brought to AICC headquarters

The Delhi Police has issued an advisory urging people to avoid taking several major routes on roads in the national capital, ahead of the funeral of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.
The traffic advisory outlines restrictions and diversions on major routes in New Delhi, urging the public to instead use public transport to help ease congestion.
"The dignitaries of many foreign countries and other VIPs/VVIPS and the general public will visit Nigambodh Ghat on the occasion of the state funeral of late Dr Manmohan Singh, Former PM of India on December 28, 2024," Delhi Traffic Police said in its advisory on Friday.
According to the advisory, diversion points include Raja Ram Kohli Marg, Rajghat Red Light, Signature Bridge, and Yudhister Setu. Traffic restrictions, regulations, and diversion may be imposed on Ring Road (Mahatma Gandhi Marg), Nishad Raj Marg, Boulevard Road, SPM Marg, Lothian Road, and Netaji Subhash Marg from 7 a.m. onwards, likely till 3 p.m.
The advisory advises people to avoid the mentioned roads and stretches, as well as the area where the procession will take place. Commuters going to Old Delhi Railway Station, ISBT, Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, and Tis Hazari Court are advised to leave with sufficient time to accommodate possible delays on the route.

According to Times of India, the Railway Protection said that the man was not in good mental condition. They said his actions and behaviour suggested that he was experiencing some mental health issues.&nbsp;

Former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh died on Thursday night (Dec 26) at the age of 92. Leaders from the Indian and international political spectrum condoled Dr Singh's demise.
Dr Singh was the 14th prime minister of India: in charge of the top post from 2004 to 2014.

Being the PM meant, that Singh had to reside with his family in New Delhi. However, long before his tenure as prime minister, Singh had rented out a house in the northeastern state of Assam.
<h2>Manmohan Singh- the diligent tenant</h2>
According to media reports, the property in Assam's Guwahati belonged to Hemoprova Saikia. The house was officially rented by Manmohan Singh in 1991, the year when he was first elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam.
House number 3989 in Guwahati's Nandan Nagar, remained Singh's address until his fifth Rajya Sabha term ended in 2019. Following this, he was elected from Rajasthan (for the Rajya Sabha). He retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier in 2024.

&nbsp;&ldquo;This is not against any person or thing... but against a continuous injustice that is happening in the state. What happened at Anna University is only the tipping point. If you look at what has been happening over the last three years... the continuous injustice against the common people, against women and children, and the corruption,&rdquo; he said.
On Thursday, Annamalai said that he would fast for 48 days and abstain from wearing footwear until the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government was removed from power in Tamil Nadu.
&ldquo;Tomorrow, I will hold a protest in front of my house, where I will whip myself six times. I will fast for 48 days and appeal to the six-armed Murugan. A protest will be held in front of the house of every BJP member,&rdquo; he said.

Annamalai&rsquo;s protests followed the assault of a student at Anna University in Chennai earlier in the week. The student&rsquo;s male friend was also beaten during the attack. A 37-year-old roadside food vendor has been arrested, with the police saying on Wednesday that he had confessed to the crime.
The incident has triggered a political row between the ruling DMK and opposition parties. On Wednesday, Annamalai criticised the DMK government, claiming that Tamil Nadu had become a &ldquo;breeding ground of unlawful activities&rdquo; and a &ldquo;haven for criminals&rdquo; under its administration.

Recently, the Indian space agency (ISRO) successfully conducted a crucial test that will enable its largest rocket LVM3 to inject satellites into orbits at different altitudes, all in a single mission. This restart capability is made possible due to the development of a 'multi-element ignitor' that can help restart the 'CE-20' Cryogenic engine that sits atop the LVM3 rocket. During this test,&nbsp;both the engine and facility performance were normal, and the required engine performance parameters were achieved as anticipated, ISRO said.

As the final stage of the LVM3 rocket, it is the Cryogenic engine that is responsible for placing satellites into different designated orbits (altitudes) in space. This capability improves&nbsp;the operational flexibility and commercial potential of a rocket.
When ferrying multiple satellites, it is crucial to have the capability to restart the final stage engine. That way, a single rocket can place&nbsp;multiple satellites in different orbits in an efficient manner, thereby avoiding the need for multiple rockets and multiple launches. In this case, ISRO tested only the first element of the multi-element ignitor, while monitoring the health of the other two elements. Eventually, ISRO would be able to perform two or three re-starts of the cryogenic engine.
PSLV has done several missions where it has placed multiple satellites in different orbits. For example, in April 2019, India&rsquo;s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), in its 47th mission (PSLV-C45), launched EMISAT, the primary satellite and 28 international customer satellites. The primary Satellite was injected into a 749 km orbit, followed by two fourth-stage restarts to achieve a 504 km orbit, where all customer satellites were injected. Subsequently, the fourth stage was restarted again to achieve a 485km orbit to serve as an orbital platform to carry out space-borne experimentation.

Significantly, this latest Cryogenic engine restart test was carried out using a specialised test apparatus. Typically, ISRO tests the Cryogenic engine at a High Altitude Test Facility, which simulates space-like vacuum conditions. However, the High Altitude Test is a highly sophisticated process and it has certain technical limitations. 
"While the Cryogenic engine is meant to fire in space for 200-300 seconds, we are only able to test fire it for a maximum of 25 seconds at the ISRO High Altitude Test Facility. This 25 seconds is just a fraction of the engine's actual burn time. Therefore, we devised a unique method to test fire the Cryogenic engine for its actual burn time. Known as a Sea Level test, this method is typically unsuitable for testing Cryogenic engines, but we introduced some new techniques that helped us test the Cryogenic engine successfully at normal earth-like conditions," Dr. V. Narayanan, Director of ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre explained to WION.
We devised a Nozzle Protection System that has paved the way for a cost-effective and less complex procedure for acceptance testing of cryogenic engines.

<h2>How ISRO launched 36 satellites using LVM3, before having re-start capability</h2>
In October 2022 and March 2023, the LVM3 performed commercial missions for the private firm OneWeb (now Eutelsat OneWeb), launching 36 satellites during each mission. While ISRO had not developed the Cryogenic engine re-start technology back then, ISRO made use of Cold Gas thrusters to deftly move the Cryogenic stage of the rocket to safely place all satellites in their respective slots.
"The remaining liquid hydrogen in the Cryogenic fuel tank was used to manoeuvre the upper stage in a manner in which we could eject all 36 satellites in their designated orbital slots. This is known as a cold gas thruster because there is no fuel burning involved. This method provides small amounts of thrust that can help achieve minor variations in the orbit and attitude(orientation) of the rocket stage. This is used in some satellites as well, due to its safe and simple operation," Dr. S. Unnikrishnan Nair, Director of ISRO's Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre explained to WION. 
So far, only the SSLV(smallest rocket) and PSLV(workhorse rocket) had the upper stage re-start capability. Now, the LVM3 also has this capability and it goes on to further enhance the commercial potential of our largest rocket, he added.
<h2>About the 'CE 20' Cryogenic engine</h2>
A cryogenic engine is among the most efficient and complex rocket propulsion systems. Cryogenic engines typically make use of liquid oxygen (LOX) and liquid hydrogen (LH2). The former liquefies at -183 degrees Celsius, the latter liquifies at -253 degree Celsius. The complex storage requirements for these super-cooled propellants make cryogenic engines more challenging to design and operate compared to conventional engines.

This engine has successfully powered the upper stage of six LVM3 missions so far. Recently, the engine was qualified for the Gaganyaan mission with a thrust level of 20 tonnes and also to an upgrated thrust level of 22 tonnes for the future C32 stage, towards enhancing the payload capability of the LVM3 launch vehicle.

Despite that, rain poured down in the national capital, and the AQI remains poor.&nbsp;
Although meteorologists suggest the rain may settle dust and pollutant particles, leading to improved AQI levels, the authorities persist in continuing adherence to safeguard the public health.&nbsp;

How 'quiet' Manmohan Singh paved the way for India's 'bold' foreign policy

The Central government has declared a seven-day period of state mourning across India, starting December 26 following the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
As a mark of respect, a Union Home Ministry message reads, the mourning period will be observed from December 26, 2024, to January 1, 2025 both days inclusive.
"During this period the national flag will be flown at half-mast throughout India where it is regularly flown and there will be no official entertainment during the period of state mourning. It has also been decided that the state funeral will be accorded to late Dr. Manmohan Singh," the message mentions.
It further pointed out that the "national flag shall also fly half-mast on the day of funeral in all Indian missions and High Commissions of India abroad."
The message also mentions that the Government of India has announced with profound sorrow the death of Manmohan Singh on December 26 at AIIMS hospital, New Delhi.
Singh passed away on Thursday evening at the age of 92. He served as India's Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 and is remembered for his pivotal role in shaping the country's economic reforms and global diplomacy. His leadership and contributions to the nation have left an indelible mark, making his loss a moment of profound grief for the entire country.
Singh is survived by his wife Gurcharan Singh and three daughters.

India's National Flag will be flown at half-mast on the days of mourning throughout India on all government buildings where it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment.

The Central government has declared a seven-day period of state mourning across India, starting December 26 following the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. As a mark of respect, a Union Home Ministry message reads, the mourning period will be observed from December 26, 2024, to January 1, 2025 both days inclusive. "During this period the national flag will be flown at half-mast throughout India where it is regularly flown and there will be no official entertainment during the period of state mourning. It has also been decided that the state funeral will be accorded to late Dr. Manmohan Singh," the message mentions. It further pointed out that the "national flag shall also fly half-mast on the day of funeral in all Indian missions and High Commissions of India abroad." The Congress party leader was earlier taken to All India Medical Institute (AIIMS) as his health deteriorated and was admitted to the emergency department. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had a sudden loss of consciousness at home on Thursday evening.&nbsp;
"Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the medical emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi, at 8:06 pm," AIIMS said in the statement, adding, "Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 pm."&nbsp;
Delhi Congress took to X, saying, "The demise of renowned economist and former Prime Minister of the country, respected Manmohan Singh ji is an irreparable loss to Indian politics."
"May God give peace to the departed soul and strength to his family to bear this sorrow. The Delhi Congress family pays homage to the memories of respected Manmohan ji and expresses gratitude for his contribution to nation building," the post added.&nbsp;

Dr Manmohan Singh, India's 14th prime minister, was born on September 26, 1932, in Punjab.&nbsp;
His academic career took him from Punjab to the University of Cambridge, UK, where he earned a First Class Honours degree in Economics in 1957. Dr Singh followed this with a D.Phil in Economics from Nuffield College at Oxford University in 1962. His book, &ldquo;India&rsquo;s Export Trends and Prospects for Self-Sustained Growth&rdquo; was an early critique of India&rsquo;s inward-oriented trade policy.
He joined the Indian government as an economic adviser in the commerce ministry in 1971. Next year, he was promoted to chief economic adviser in the finance ministry.&nbsp;
In the role, he brought over a decade of remarkable growth and development.
A thinker and scholar, Dr Singh was regarded for his diligence and academic approach to work, as well as his accessibility and his unassuming demeanour.
He also served as Secretary in the Ministry of Finance; Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission; Governor of the Reserve Bank of India; adviser of the Prime Minister; and Chairman of the University Grants Commission.

Former Indian prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh died on Thursday (Dec 26) at the age of 92.
Just a few hours back, Dr Singh was hospitalised in the emergency department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the national capital.
In a statement, AIIMS announced that Singh died. "He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had a sudden loss of consciousness at home on December 26. Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home."

Former Indian PM Manmohan Singh admitted to AIIMS emergency department: Report

Namita Roy was just 26 years old when she gave birth to her son, 'Tsunami', in a snake-infested jungle where she and her family took shelter after deadly waves triggered by a massive earthquake devoured her home in Hut Bay Island in Andaman and Nicobar on this day in 2004.
Twenty years later, she remembers the day with a shudder.
"I don't want to recall that dark day. I was pregnant and busy with daily chores. Suddenly, I noticed an eerie silence and was shocked to witness the sea receding miles from our shore. We also noticed zugunruhe in birds," she told PTI.
"Seconds later, there was a scary susurration sound and we saw a huge wall of sea waves gushing towards Hut Bay Island followed by strong tremors. I saw people screaming and running towards a hillock. I had a panic attack and fainted.

"Hours later, I regained consciousness and saw myself among thousands of locals deep inside a hilly jungle. I was relieved to see my husband and my elder son. Most parts of our island were devoured by the monstrous waves. Almost all the properties were damaged," a teary-eyed Roy said.
She now lives in West Bengal's Hooghly district with her two sons Saurabh and Tsunami after her husband Laxminarayan died during the Covid-19 pandemic.
"At 11.49 pm, I had labour pain but there was no doctor around. I lay on a boulder and cried for help. My husband tried his best but could not get any medical help. Then he pleaded with some women who had also taken shelter inside the jungle. With their help, I gave birth to Tsunami amid an extremely challenging situation... the jungle was infested with snakes," Roy said.
"There was no food and I didn't have the courage to come out of the jungle, fearing the sea. In the meantime, my condition started deteriorating due to excessive blood loss. Somehow, I fed my newborn baby to keep him alive because he was premature. The other victims survived on coconut water. We spent four nights at Lal Tikri Hills in Hut Bay and were later rescued by the defence personnel. I was taken to GB Pant Hospital in Port Blair (on a ship) for further treatment," she recalled.
Hut Bay is about 117 km from Port Blair and the journey takes around eight hours by ship.
Roy's elder son Saurabh works in a private shipping company, while Tsunami wants to become an oceanographer to serve the Andaman and Nicobar administration.

"My mother is everything to me. She is the strongest person I have ever seen. After my father passed away, she struggled hard to feed us and ran her food delivery service, which she proudly named 'Tsunami Kitchen'. I want to become an oceanographer," Tsunami Roy said.
In 2004, large-scale devastation and loss of lives could have been averted as there was no effective warning system, officials said.
"At present, there are more than 1,400 warning stations around the world and we are fully prepared to handle such a situation," a senior official of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration said.

It is to be noted that Congress&rsquo;s Ajay Maken released a 12-point "white paper" on Wednesday (Dec 25), accusing Kejriwal of not fulfilling the promise of setting up a Janlokpal in Delhi. "If there is one word to describe former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal here then it would be Farziwal," he said. "If anyone is the king of fraud in the entire country then it is Kejriwal and that is why we have come here with a white paper on the Kejriwal government and also on the BJP government at the Centre," Maken added.

The Enforcement Directorate has launched an investigation to probe against some Indian people, entities, and Canadian colleges for trafficking Indians into the United States through the Canadian border.
The case has been linked to the killing of an Indian family in 2022 that perished in the harsh winters while trying to cross the border illegally.&nbsp;
A four-member Indian family from Gujarat's Dingucha village died in extreme cold on January 19, 2022, while they were trying to cross the Canada-US border.
The ED issued a press statement saying that it has conducted searches at eight locations in Mumbai, Nagpur, Gandhinagar, and Vadodara as part of the ongoing probe against a man named Bhavesh Ashokbhai Patel.
Patel allegedly planned to send the victims to America through Canada via illegal channels.&nbsp;

Moreover, the agency further claimed that Patel and others allegedly conspired to send Indians to the US on the pretext of taking admissions in Canadian colleges.&nbsp;
"Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Ahmedabad Zonal Office has conducted search operations on 10.12.2024 and 19.12.2024, under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002 at 8 locations in Mumbai, Nagpur, Gandhinagar and Vadodara as part of the ongoing probe in the case of Bhavesh Ashokbhai Patel and others (Dingucha case) for hatching a well-planned conspiracy, to send the victims/persons to USA through Canada via illegal channel thereby committing the offence of human trafficking," it said in the statement.
Further revealing the racket's modus operandi, the ED stated that these people grant Canadian student visas, and once they reach the country, they cross the US-Canada border instead of joining their respective colleges.
Later, the fees received by the Canadian colleges are remitted to the individuals' accounts.&nbsp;
"ED initiated the investigation on the basis of an FIR registered by DCB, Crime Branch, Ahmedabad City, Gujarat against Bhavesh Ashokbhai Patel and others after a family of 04 Indian nationals of Dingucha village, Gujarat was found dead on Canada-US Border 19.01.2022. All the accused, in conspiracy with each other, lured the innocent Indian nationals by charging them huge amounts of Rs. 55 to 60 Lakh per person, for causing them to illegally enter the USA through Canada," the agency added.&nbsp;
The agency further revealed that about 25,000 students are being referred by one entity and over 10,000 students by the other to various colleges based outside India every year.&nbsp;
"It is further revealed that around 112 colleges based in Canada have entered into an agreement with one entity and more than 150 with another entity. Their involvement in the instant case is under investigation," the agency added.&nbsp;

All the accused, in conspiracy with each other, lured the innocent Indian nationals by charging them huge amounts of Rs. 55 to 60 Lakh per person, for causing them to illegally enter the USA through Canada," the agency added. The agency further revealed that about 25,000 students are being referred by one entity and over 10,000 students by the other to various colleges based outside India every year. "It is further revealed that around 112 colleges based in Canada have entered into an agreement with one entity and more than 150 with another entity. This growth has been driven by factors such as robust trade agreements, a diversified export portfolio, improved logistics infrastructure, and government initiatives like the Make in India campaign and the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
It also said "India's performance in services exports better than goods: India ranks 16th globally in merchandise exports and the seventh in services exports Similarly, India's share in global imports also witnessed an increase. Merchandise imports rose from 1.3 per cent in 2005 to 2.8 per cent in 2023, while services imports increased from 2.4 per cent to 3.4 per cent. Overall, India's share in global imports grew from 1.5 per cent to 2.9 per cent during this period.

However, the last decade (FY14-FY24) saw a significant moderation in export growth. Export growth slowed to a CAGR of 3.3 per cent due to subdued global demand, trade protectionism, and disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions.

In an unexpected move, the Delhi government’s senior officers have disowned the registration of two schemes started by Chief Minister Atishi and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal under the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), highlighting the disagreements between the elected Delhi government and the bureaucracy. This comes after an amendment to the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) Act that placed the services department under the power of the lieutenant governor.
<h2>Departments call the schemes fraudulent</h2>
On Monday (Dec 23), Atishi and Kejriwal launched Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojna, under which non-taxpaying women are eligible to receive Rs 2,100 ($24.59) from the government. The second scheme, Sanjeevani Yojna offers free healthcare benefits for people over the age of 60 years in all Delhi hospitals.
However, both schemes are not yet approved, sparking debate from the centre-ruling BJP, who are accusing AAP of misleading the people of Delhi.

Department of Women and Child Development issued a public notice in newspapers stating that no such scheme has been officially declared and warning people not to engage with any individual or political party collecting forms, applications or information for applicants. It further deemed those activities fraudulent.
“The general public are hereby advised and requested not to entertain such promises of a non-existent scheme, as these are misleading and without any authority…,” the statement by Department of Women and Child Development read.
A similar notice was issued by the Health and Family Welfare Department, which also declared the promises fraudulent. It also said that people have started enquiring about the scheme in government hospitals.

In a post on X, Kejriwal wrote, “These people are rattled by the Mahila Samman Yojana and Sanjeevani Yojana. They have planned to arrest Atishi ji in the next few days by filing a fake case. Before that, raids will be conducted on senior AAP leaders…”
While the clearance for the scheme offering non-tax paying women was given to the Delhi government earlier this month, the official registration portal for the scheme has not been made operational. The healthcare scheme has not yet been passed by the cabinet or implemented.

In a viral video doing rounds on social media, Pannun is seen threatening to attack PM Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during the Kumbh Mela 2025 which is set to take place in Prayagraj. 
He said his organisation, Sikhs For Justice, would take "revenge" for the encounter of three Khalistani terrorists. 
Pilibhit Police have noted the threat and said that legal proceedings against Pannun are underway.

He further claimed that his organisation would “give an answer” (read as take revenge) for the encounter of Khalistani terrorists and threatened to launch attacks on the Maha Kumbh on January 14, January 29 and February 3 next year. Notably, these dates are auspicious of 'Shahi Snan'. 
He then reinstated that PM Modi and CM Yogi would be there in Prayagraj on these days and SJF would take revenge by "shaking the foundation" of "Hindutva terrorism", and will make this Maha Kumbh, the last Maha Kumbh for the two leaders.

Earlier on Monday, UP and Punjab Police officials killed three Khalistani terrorists accused of attacking a police post in Punjab's Gurdaspur district.
The three pro-Khalistani terrorists have been identified as Gurvinder Singh (25), Virender Singh alias Ravi (23), and Jaspreet Singh alias Pratap Singh (18), members of Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), a banned terror outfit.
The operation took place in Pilibhit district of UP.  The three men were shot dead after they allegedly fired at the police party.
