CJP demands the Centre honour protest commitments on FIRs, NEET compensation and exam reforms, warning of possible fresh action after August 24

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Sunday called on the Centre to fulfil the commitments it allegedly made to the pressure group to bring its protest at Jantar Mantar to an end. The online outfit-turned-pressure group accused the government of betraying the country’s youth and breaking their trust after the protest was withdrawn on the assurance that its key demands would be addressed. "We will not allow the government to insult an entire generation by making promises to end a peaceful movement and then attempting to wriggle out of those very promises once the streets have emptied. A commitment made to the youth of India must be honoured both, in letter and in spirit," the CJP wrote in an official statement.

Government yet to provide list of FIRs to court

The CJP alleged that despite repeated requests from the court regarding FIRs registered against student protesters and their proposed quashing, the government has not yet provided the required list. "The Union Government did not commit to providing it. At the press conference immediately thereafter, CJP Co-Convener Saurav Das and Legal Affairs Lead Ratna Singh warned that the government appears to be attempting to cheat the young generation of this country after securing the withdrawal of our agitation on the basis of solemn commitments at the joint PC," the statement said. The group said any attempt to dilute, delay, reinterpret or dishonour the commitments would amount to an unacceptable breach of trust and a ‘vishwasghaat’ with young people.

CJP hints at fresh protest

The CJP said it will convene on August 24 to determine its next course of action, while asking students, young citizens, supporters and volunteers across the country to remain prepared for a possible fresh movement. "We therefore request students, young citizens, supporters and CJP volunteers across the country to remain prepared for what’s next on August 24," the group said. The organisation also claimed that no government delegation had contacted its representatives regarding the steps taken to fulfil the commitments. These included financial compensation for the families of NEET students who died by suicide.

“The protests achieved Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation but rest assured, we will not rest until each and every commitment made to the young generation is fulfilled,” the CJP said. The Cockroach Janta Party ended its more than month-long protest on July 25, saying that the government had accepted all of its demands.

According to the CJP, the three major commitments were:

The CJP is expected to decide its next steps at its August 24 meeting, potentially setting the stage for another round of protests if it concludes that the government has failed to honour its commitments.
