Virgin Hyperloop one project in Maharashtra: Mumbai to Pune in 14 minutes
The Maharashtra government has announced a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) between Virgin Hyperloop one and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority(PMRDA) to identify routes and technical viability of hyperloop transportation system in the state.
Virgin Hyperloop One will push for pod-based super-fast transportation to improve economic competitiveness, reduce congestion and emissions, and provide citizens with greater social and economic mobility.
The Virgin hyperloop proposes to cut journey from Mumbai to Pune to 14 minutes which normally takes over three hours. Virgin Hyperloop One will work with its partners in the region and the PMRDA which will help navigate the regulatory requirements and support the report with data.
The preliminary study is intended to analyse the applicability and benefits of hyperloop technology, identify high priority routes within the Maharashtra based on demand analysis and socio-economic benefits, and inform the Maharashtra government about progress to the full project stage.
US-based Virgin Hyperloop one has also signed an MoU with the Karnataka government to connect Bengaluru with cities around it. The hyperloop aims to connect Tumakuru, Hubli-Dharwad and Hosur in the state.
“India is one of the most important geographies for developing hyperloop networks and reimagining the complete transportation system,” Nick Earle, senior vice-president for global field operations, Virgin Hyperloop One, said in a statement.
The revolutionary hyperloop concept was first conceived by SpaceX founder Elon Musk in an attempt to breakout from traffic congestion and pollution problems plaguing most big cities around the world.
