Tremors felt in Delhi, NCR after earthquake of 5.8 magnitude strikes Afghanistan

Tremors were felt in India's capital city New Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) region as well as other states in north India after an earthquake of5.8magnitude struck Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region on Saturday evening.Tremors were also felt in the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the National Center of Seismology (NCS), the epicentre of the earthquake was the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan. The earthquake occurred at around 9.31 pm IST.

According to NCS, the earthquake's epicentre was at latitude 36.38, and longitude 70.77 in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 181 km.

"Earthquake of Magnitude: 5.8, Occurred on 05-08-2023, 21:31:48 IST, Lat: 36.38 & Long: 70.77, Depth: 181 Km, Location: Hindu Kush Region, Afghanistan," the NCS posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

There are no immediate reports of any damage.

Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.

Apart from Delhi, tremors were also felt in Noida and Gurugram (which fall in NCR) and the Pakistani cities of Islamabad and Lahore.

This earthquake comes months after Afghanistan's Hindu Kush was hit by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake. The tremors were felt across Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern India in Delhi, NCR Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier at around 8:36 am onSaturday, an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 jolted Jammu and Kashmir's Gulmarg. It occurred with its depth at around at 129 km, NCS reported.

"Earthquake of Magnitude:5.2, Occurred on 05-08-2023, 08:36:01 IST, Lat: 35.46 & Long: 73.32, Depth: 129 Km, Location: 184 km NNW of Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir," the NCS tweeted.
