Soon, bags heavier than 15-kg to be barred at 20 Delhi Metro stations

It may not be a smooth transit for Delhi metro commuters heading to the railway stations/airport with a big baggage, as DMRC has restricted the weight of the luggage to 15kg.

Travellers using the Delhi Metro from select stations have been barred from carrying large bags, with authorities restricting the luggage size in view of security considerations, officials said.

The maximum luggage weight of a single bag has been capped at 15 kg by DMRC.

The Delhi Metro recently fixed steel frames at the x-ray baggage machines at five large stations of Chandni Chowk, Anand Vihar, Shahdara, Kashmere Gate and Barakhamba Road, stating that the passengers "can carry maximum luggage limit of length 60 cm, width 45 cm and height 25 cm".

From March, DMRC will extend the bar on oversized baggage at 15 more stations — Adarsh Nagar, Azadpur, Badarpur, Botanical Garden, Chawri Bazar, Dilshad Garden, Govindpuri, HUDA City Centre, Inderlok, Karol Bagh, Lal Quila, Nangloi, R K Ashram Marg, Rithala and New Delhi.

“Heavy and very heavy bags lead to two problems. At big and inter-change stations like Chandni Chowk and Kashmere Gate, the baggage line is so engaged that it is very hard to concentrate on all contents of a bag. This is a possible security scare,” a senior security official said.

The second reason, he said, is that x-ray machines break down quite often and require frequent servicing.

“At such times, jawans have to scan bags manually and that is, once again, a security scare. One miss and the results can be disastrous,” he added.

The over 150 stations of the Delhi Metro are the travel gateway for about 30 lakh passengers every day to various locations in the national capital region.
