
Scammers have devised a cunning scheme involvingimpersonation offormer Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni across messaging apps and social media platforms, aiming to deceive unsuspecting individuals and extort money from them.
An individual on Instagram received a message from an imposter pretending to be MS Dhoni. He claimed tobe strandedin Ranchi without access to his wallet. Operating under the username"mahi77i2"(Dhoni'susername is"mahi7781"), the scammer requested ₹600 to helphimreturn home.
The scammer sent a selfie and included the well-known Chennai Super Kings slogan"Whistle Podu."
The message read - “Hi, I am MS Dhoni, I am messaging you from my private account. I am in Ranchi outskirtsandI have forgotten my wallet. Can you PhonePe me ₹600 so I can return home by bus,willsend it back once I get home."
The post has since received200,000 views on social media. People are shocked to see how far scammers can go to dupe unsuspecting fans.
Online scams have been taking on new forms every day. Impersonation is not a new thing when it comes to duping people, however, seeing how blatantly celeb names and photos are being used just shows the extreme lengths scammers are willing to go.
While people are advised not to click on strange links, such crimes have now gone beyond the basic realm and one needs to be extremely cautious when dealing with strangers online.
