&ldquo;I met an Indian on a chat app and learned about the SENEE investment platform. Through messaging, we enticed Indians with promises of 8 percent to 15 percent monthly returns on 1,000-rupee ($12) investments,&rdquo; confessed He, the Global Times reported, citing the Legal Daily.

The scammers then used third-party payment platforms to convert investments into USDT cryptocurrency, exchanging it for RMB or USD while taking a 15 per cent commission.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I portrayed myself as a wealthy Indian woman who achieved success through fund investments,&rdquo; a co-conspirator surnamed Li said. &ldquo;I cultivated relationships with Indian men on social media platforms to entice them into investing in SENEE funds.&rdquo;

The gang also created fake social media profiles portraying successful yet emotionally vulnerable Indian women, where they posted lifestyle, fitness, and travel photos, which they geo-tagged with Indian locations. They engaged targets in relationship-building chats.
To appear credible, they created counterfeit corporate documents like photoshopped trademark registrations, NBFC licenses, and business permits displayed on official-looking websites.
According to the court&rsquo;s findings, 66,800 Indians were defrauded of Rs 517 million between June 1, 2023, and January 13, 2024 &ndash; a span of just over seven months.

The court said that the nine defendants, who sought illegal profits through false identities and cyber fraud tactics, created a sophisticated criminal syndicate. Based on their roles and hierarchy within the group, the defendants were sentenced to five to 14 years and nine months in prison, along with fines.
Presiding judge Liu Xilei said China has been intensifying its crackdown on online and telecom fraud. The perpetrators are urged to immediately stop criminal activities and voluntarily surrender to authorities for potential leniency.

On seeing visible changes in her behaviour, her house help informed the octogenarian's daughter. As per the police, she would have loud conversations with someone over the phone and step out of her room only to have her meals.
The fraudsters continued to interrogate her and called it an 'e-investigation' where her bank details were taken for verification. Furthermore, she was prohibited from communicating details of the probe with her relatives.
An FIR was filed on March 4, which detailed a few transfers made by the accused. Nearly $580 was transferred to Shaikh's account, and about $10,400 to Butt, who handed over the money to another accused, ultimately converting it into cryptocurrency.

Last July, Instagram and Facebook parent company Meta deleted 63,000 Instagram accounts linked to sextortion scams from the West African country and blamed "Yahoo Boys" for the scam accounts.
Sextortion cases often involve young male or teen victims being persuaded to send compromising photos to fraudsters posing as young women. They are then blackmailed.
"We&rsquo;ve banned Yahoo Boys under Meta&rsquo;s Dangerous Organizations and Individuals policy &mdash;- one of our strictest policies -&mdash; which means we remove Yahoo Boys&rsquo; accounts engaged in this criminal activity whenever we become aware of them," Meta stated in July.
Weeks after the Meta clampdown, two Nigerian brothers, Samuel Ogoshi, 24, and Samson Ogoshi, 21, were jailed to 210 months in prison each after they "sexually exploited and extorted more than 100 victims," including 11 minors.&nbsp;

Amid the rising ‘digital arrest’ scam cases, a 26-year-old woman from Maharashtra's Mumbai was duped of Rs 170,000 ($2,000) after scammers claimed her name came up in a money laundering investigation.

The fraudsters also forced her to strip during a video call, according to the FIR or First Information Report from police.

In a digital arrest scam, people receive a call, usually via WhatsApp, and are told their name came up in a government agency investigation.

The victims are then isolated and threatened not to tell anyone about it. Then they are forced to transfer large sums of money to verify their details and given assurance that their money will be returned once their name is cleared in the investigation.

In another incident, a student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay was duped Rs 729,000 ($8,633) by fraudsters who issued a fake ‘digital arrest’ notice and demanded he pay the money.

The cybercriminals posed as officials from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Amid the rise of such digital arrest scams, earlier this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned citizens to beware of such phone or video calls as no investigation agency conducts interrogations in such a manner.

“Stop, think and act,” he said.

A Chinese man, who goes by his surname Jiang, has been arrested for scamming 63 hotels using used condoms and insects like cockroaches. The 21-year-old man, who was arrested in eastern China and spent his university fee on travelling instead of enrolling, used to place dead cockroaches, other insects, and condoms in the rooms when his funds ran out.&nbsp;

He used to blackmail hotels seeking free accommodation along with compensation.&nbsp;

Jiang started his travel journey in September this year when he received the money to enroll into university but he decided to ditch that idea and go to travel instead.&nbsp;

But when Jiang ran out of money while travelling and staying at hotels, he came up with a "creative" idea. He prepared a collection of props, including dead and living insects, used condoms, and strands of hair, to fabricate the sanitary condition of the hotel rooms he used to check-in.&nbsp;

“Over 10 months, Jiang frequently stayed at hotels, sometimes checking into three or four different ones in a single day. He would exploit minor flaws or plant insects, bugs, and hair to threaten hotels with complaints or online exposure, demanding free stays or compensation,” police told My News.&nbsp;

Many of the hotels he blackmailed responded with compensation to save their reputation. But on August 8, a hotel manager reported Jiang to the police for extorting money by alleging hygiene issues.&nbsp;

“His complaints about supposed bugs and hair in the rooms were alarming. Upon discussing these incidents with several other hotels, we noticed a recurring pattern with this guest,” one of the scammed hotel staff told My News.&nbsp;

During the investigation, police found around 23 packets containing items he used to stage his scam, including dead cockroaches and dirty condoms.&nbsp;

The investigation further led to the revelation that Jiang has stayed in around 380 hotels since November last year and many of them have reported financial refunds and compensation to him.&nbsp;
