Twitter users are being targetted by crooks impersonating banks or banking officials, according to a New York Post report. When a user posts a complaint related to their bank account by tagging the bank (say @ICICI or @Wellsfargo), the scammer posing as the customer service representative approaches them. The scamster usually quote tweets the original tweet and gives a helpline number to the user. Once the customer takes the bait and calls on the number, the scammer manages to collect private information such as login credentials to access the user's bank account. Thanks to Elon Musk's newly launched Twitter Blue subscription service, scammers are able to buy the blue checkmark and trick customers into believing that the particular Twitter account is the legit and official handle of the company. The group ran the online platform "HoggPool" which promised its clients "financial gains after having lured them by fraudulent means", said a statement released by the prosecution service late Saturday.

The scheme promised large profits from crypto-currency mining and trading services, for fees charged at an attractive foreign exchange rate.

"They sold people a computer tool: you paid 4,000 Egyptian pounds for it, and you earned 30,000 pounds. You paid 100,000 and you earned a million," said TV talk show presenter Amr Adib.

Launched in August, HoggPool abruptly ceased operations in February and vanished with the money, the state-run daily Al-Ahram reported.

Authorities said the network was planning to launch a new platform called "Riot" when they were arrested.

Egypt: Twenty-nine detained for alleged crypto scam

Delhi Police on Sunday arrested two men for allegedly duping several applicants seeking jobs with the Indian Railways. The two arrested men, Sivaraman V and Vikas Rana are accused of falsely offering jobs to victims and making them count trains at the New Delhi Railway Station for several weeks.&nbsp;

According to the police, the victims paid almost Rs 200,000 ($2,400) to Rs 2.4 million ($29,528) each to secure their jobs as ticket examiners, traffic assistants or clerks.

The deputy commissioner of police (EOW) MI Haider said that Rana, who is from Delhi, earlier used to work at the National Museum of Natural History but left his job last year in March. Sivaraman on the other hand is from Tamil Nadu, the Times Of India reported.&nbsp;

Officials&nbsp;have also identified Satender Dubey, a 35-year-old man from Bihar as the leader of the gang, who lived in Uttam Nagar, southwest Delhi. He and his 24-year-old accomplice are on the run.&nbsp;

A senior official told PTI that Rana placed two people and was paid Rs 6,000 ($72.5) for each placement, the Daily Pioneer reported.&nbsp;

He said, "Dubey floated the idea of engaging in a bigger scam and discussed his plan with Rana. Taking advantage of his financial crisis, Dubey convinced Rana to join him and dupe people on the pretext of getting them jobs in Indian Railways."

The investigation began in November last year.&nbsp;

Indian Railways is one of the world's largest employers.&nbsp;Scams for government jobs are rising, especially when millions of young individuals are desperate for stable and secure employment.&nbsp;

Train counting scam: Delhi police arrest two men for cheating railway job seekers

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday received sanction to prosecute former Bihar chief minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav in the land-for -job scam.&nbsp;Last year, the CBI had filed an FIR in the land-for-railway-job&nbsp;case and named Lalu Yadav, his wife and daughters as accused in the case along with several others. The alleged scam took place when Lalu Prasad Yadav was Railway Minister between 2004 to 2009.&nbsp;

The CBI had in July 2022 arrested Bhola Yadav, who used to be the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Lalu Prasad Yadav when he was railway minister, in the alleged land-for-job case.&nbsp;

The FIR reads that during the period 2004 to 2009. various persons were appointed as substitutes on group D post in different zones of the Railway in exchange for land, by the unknown public servants of the Indian Railway and later they were regularized.&nbsp;

It was further alleged that unknown public servants of the Indian Railway did not follow the instructions/guidelines issued by the department prevalent during the relevant period for appointment of substitutes in group D post in railways.&nbsp;

It further reads that enquiry has revealed that some individuals who were&nbsp;residents of Patna, Bihar were appointed as substitutes on group D&nbsp;posts during the period 2004-2009 in different zones of railways at Mumbai, Jabalpur, Kolkata, Jaipur, Hajipur and in lieu thereof the individuals themselves or their family members transferred their land in the name of family members of Lalu Prasad Yadav, then Minister of Railway, and a Company AK Infosystems Private Limited.&nbsp;

"Out of seven instances of land transfer, it is revealed that three sale deeds were executed in favour of Rabri Devi, wife of Lalu Yadav, one sale deed was executed in the name of Misha Bharti, daughter of Lalu Prasad Yadav, one sale deed was executed in favour of M/s AK Infosystems Private Limited, in which later Rabri Devi became major shareholder, in the year 2014 and currently she is one of the directors of the company. Two gift deeds were executed in favour of Hema Yadav, daughter of Lalu Prasad Yadav," it reads.&nbsp;

The enquiry has prima facie revealed that a total of 12 persons were appointed as substitutes in six different Zones of Railway during the period when Lalu Prasad Yadav was Minister of Railway i.e. from 2004 to 2009 in exchange for above mentioned seven instances of land transfer.&nbsp;

Interestingly, in most of the cases of land transfer, payment to the sellers was shown to be done in cash. The current value of the above said seven parcels of land including the land acquired through gift deeds as per the existing circle rate is about Rs 4.39 crore.&nbsp;

The enquiry has prima facie indicated that Lalu Prasad Yadav as Minister of Railway, as a public servant abused his official position for obtaining&nbsp;a pecuniary advantage in the name of his family members in the form of land in the matter of appointment of substitutes in group D post in different Zones of Railway.&nbsp;

CBI conducted searches at 17 locations belonging to Lalu Yadav and his family members in Delhi and Bihar in May 2022.&nbsp;

Back in August 2022, the CBI conducted raids at 25 different places reportedly in connection with the land-for-job&nbsp;scam.&nbsp;

In Bihar, the raids were conducted at the properties linked to RJD MLC Sunil Singh and three MPs Ashfaque Karim, Faiyaz Ahmed and Subodh Roy.&nbsp;

The scam happened mostly over Whatsapp where fraudsters pretended to be their family members and messaged asking for money.

To get the victim's attention, the fraudsters texted "Hi mum" in the messages, Money control reported.&nbsp;

After the victim was convinced that the person texting is actually their son or daughter or close family member, the fraudster began asking for money assuming that their phone is lost and using a new phone number to ask for help.&nbsp;

The majority of victims were women older than 55 years old.&nbsp;As per reports till now over $7.2 million has been scammed&nbsp;by nearly 11,000 people as of now.&nbsp;

The Australian Consumer and Competition Commission (ACCC) claimed that the number of frauds raised rapidly in the last three months.

ACCC's deputy chairman gave instructions. He said, "If you’re contacted by someone claiming to be your son, daughter, relative, or friend, start by calling them on the number already stored in your phone to confirm if it’s no longer in use. If they pick up – you know it’s a scam."

In most cities, the electricity board will send out a message to subscribers reminding them to pay their electricity bills on time. People have, however, recently reported receiving WhatsApp messages telling them to pay their electricity bill or their electricity connection will be suspended. Even a tech-savvy person could be persuaded by the message to pay right away without giving it a second thought.

According to Twitter users, the notification informing customers to pay their electricity bill is typically issued via SMS or WhatsApp.

A scammer-owned phone number can be found in the message. The con artist convinces the user, who is frantically dialling the number, that they must pay for the electricity or risk having their electricity cut off. Most incidences of electricity&nbsp;scams have been recorded by con artists in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, and Odisha, among other cities.

The message says, “Dear Consumer Your Electricity power will be disconnected. Tonight at 9.30 pm from electricity office. because your previous month bill was not update. Please immediately contact with our electricity officer 8260303942 Thank you.” It is sent from a random phone number which does not belong to any of the electricity boards. Now if you notice clearly the message is not sent by an authorized source. When you get a message from say the BSES Delhi, the phone number is replaced by “BSES DL”.

The message's use of language should raise another warning sign. The sentences are incorrectly constructed. The writing is really chaotic throughout. It is obvious that the message does not adhere to correct syntax. There are erroneous full stops and a complete lack of understanding of capital letters and small-cap characters.

People have been warned by the Maharashtra Cyber Cell to be aware of such mails that are delivered with the obvious goal of deceiving innocent people . Most people who have actually forgotten to pay their electricity bill are most likely to fall for the message since it is worrisome.

He is alleging that Meta's platform breached anti-money laundering laws and was being used to scam Austrlians. Forrest, Australia's richest man, is chairman of Fortescue Metals Group.

He said that he was taking legal action to stop people from losing money to clickbait advertising scams. He added&nbsp;that his image was also being used to promote cryptocurrency schemes. He has filed the lawsuit in Magistrates Court of Western Australia alleges Facebook

The lawsuit says Facebook &nbsp;"failed to create controls or a corporate culture to prevent its systems being used to commit crime."

It also alleges Facebook was criminally reckless by not taking sufficient steps to stop criminals from using its social media platform to send scam advertisements to defraud Australian users.

The lawsuit comes after Forrest said he made several requests asking Facebook to prevent his image from being used to promote investment plans, including in an open letter to Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg in November 2019.

Facebook, which changed its name to Meta last year, declined to comment on the lawsuit but said that in general it has always taken a "multifaceted approach" to stop such ads appearing and had blocked advertisers.

"We're committed to keeping these people off our platform," a spokesperson for Meta said in an emailed statement.

Some advertisements, which have used Forrest's image and claimed to promote cryptocurrency investment schemes, have appeared on Facebook since March 2019, the lawsuit said.

"This action is being taken on behalf of those everyday Australians – Mums and Dads, Grans and Grandads – who work all their lives to gather their savings and to ensure those savings aren't swindled away by scammers," Forrest said in a statement.

Under Australian law, a private prosecution of a foreign corporation for alleged offences under the Commonwealth Criminal Code requires the consent of the country's attorney general.

"The Attorney-General has given her consent to the private prosecution against Facebook in relation to alleged offences under subsection 400.7(2) of the Criminal Code," said Steven Lewis, principal of Mark O'Brien Legal, which will represent Forrest in the case.

A US court on Thursday sentenced an Indian national to three years in federal prison in connection with a telemarketing fraud scheme.

Himanshu Asri (34) of Delhi had previously admitted to being a key participant in a wide-ranging telemarketing fraud scheme that targeted and defrauded US residents, primarily senior citizens, the Department of Justice said.

The 36 months in federal prison will be followed by three years of federal supervised release, Acting United States Attorney Richard B Myrus announced.

Asri faces deportation proceedings upon completion of his term of incarceration.

In his guilty plea last December, Asri admitted that for at least the five years that preceded his arrest in early 2020, he ran a call centre in India that engaged in Tech Fraud, a scheme to extract money from computer users by deceiving them into believing that their computers were subject to attacks.

As part of the scheme, Asri had pop-up advertisements appear on computer users'' screens. The ads falsely asserted that malware was detected on those computers and urged that a telephone number be called for assistance, federal prosecutors alleged.

Those who called spoke to operators at Asri's call centre and other call centres based in India. The operators reiterated the lie that malware was detected on the callers'' computers and offered them fictitious computer protection services for an exorbitant price, according to court papers.

"Those who fell prey to this scam paid on an average $482 and sometimes, over $1,000 and did not receive any actual computer protection service or assistance," it said.

According to the Department of Justice, from the call data obtained for three months, it was estimated that over five years, Asri's scheme led approximately 6,500 people to view the deceptive pop-up ads and encounter call centre operators who made the Tech Fraud pitch.

South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that the woman was told she is required to transfer the money into bank accounts held by the probe team.&nbsp;

Many days later, police said, a person came to her house with a mobile phone and SIM card for the woman to communicate with the fraudsters who persuaded her to make 11 bank account transfers.

In five months, the woman gave away HK$250 million ($32 million), which is being described as the biggest recorded phone scam of the city.&nbsp;

On the other hand, Most of the CPEC workers based in Pakistan belong to the Chinese military in one way or the other. They are trained in martial arts and weapon handling.

That’s why they get involved in clashes with Pakistani locals and thrash them now and then.

Last year there were reports of trafficking of Pakistani women to China, who were lured with fake marriages.

Chinese banks looking to curtail investments in CPEC due to instability in Pakistan

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has booked the GVK Group Chairmna,&nbsp;Gunupati Venkata Krishna Reddy, for a scam related to Mumbai airport.

Allegedly, GVK Chairman, Airport Authority of India (AAI) and few others participated in a fraud in the development of Mumbai's international airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.&nbsp;

The fraud has apparently incurred the government of India a loss of more than&nbsp;$92 million.

CBI filed a criminal case against GVK Chairman Reddy, his son, AAI and few other individuals in late hours of Wednesday.

CBI books GVK Chairman for a Mumbai airport scam of $92 million

Indian state Maharashtra’s cyber department published a report and issued a warning alongside it on June 23 claiming that threats of cyber attacks originating in China loomed large.

Additionally, it said that over the last week, over 40,000 attacks targetted sites that hoard sensitive information in the state. These include government records of infrastructure, and bank details.

However, the state body added that none of these infiltrations were successful. The police said urged users on the internet to exercise caution and to audit their systems regularly, given the strenuous relationship between China and India in the aftermath of the Galwan valley violence which killed 20 Indian soldiers in action.

Yet, the state officials added that the hackers have in their possession a database of over 20 lakh Indian email IDs.

Given the severity of the border conflict, a warning was issued by the central government. A report from June 18 revealed that China is hosting multiple DDOS (distributed denial of service) attacks against Indian information websites, and payment gateways, which could jeopardise a lot of data.

According to the Maharashtra Cyber Department, exactly 40,300 cyber attacks were initiated over the last week.

As part of these coordinated attacks, hackers attempted to trespass protective measures to prevent data leakage. The targets were major government websites, banking systems, and ATMs.

When the cyber department tracked these attacks, it led them to Chengdu, a city in Central China. The imperative detail here is that China’s People’s Liberation Army’s Unit 61398 is stationed in the city, and is known for its cyber warfare tactics.

India is one of many&nbsp;victims of such Chinese aggression. Reportedly, Australia also reported a major attack on its administrative services and political organisations last month. An FIR has been lodged against a teacher, Anamika Shukla, who had allegedly withdrawn over Rs 1 crore in salary for over a year from 25 different schools.Shukla was allegedly working as a teacher in 25 schools for 13 months and was withdrawing salary from all of these.

"Basic Education Officer has given a written complaint against the teacher Anamika Shukla. The complaint reads that she had landed the jobs through forged documents. FIR has been registered and further action will be taken," said Atul Sharma, SP (rural) while speaking to ANI.

Threats of being implicated for theft and even being killed are among the allegations caught on camera in a video recorded by so-called “dummy directors” associated with companies linked to Nirav Modi, which was submitted by the CBI to the UK court hearing the extradition case against the diamond merchant charged with fraud and money laundering.

A group of six Indian men can be heard in the video played at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London during the trial this week, with each of them making allegations of being forced to leave Dubai and come to Cairo, Egypt, where their passports were confiscated and were allegedly made to sign dubious documents against their will by Modi’s brother, Nehal Modi.

“My name is Ashish Kumar Mohanbhai Lad, I am the namesake owner of Sunshine Gems Limited, Hong Kong, and Unity Trading Fze, Dubai,” says one of the men on the recording from June 2018.

“Nirav Modi phoned me and told me that he would implicate me for theft. He used the worst expletives” told me that he would get me killed… he did so much to us,” he says in Hindi.

The other Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) witnesses include Rushabh Jethwa, who says he is the namesake owner of Empire Gems FZE in Sharjah; Sonu Mehta, the namesake director of Auragem Company Limited, Hong Kong; Shreedhar Mayekar, the namesake owner of Unique Diamond and Jewellery, Azman; and Nileshkumar Balwantrai Mistry, the namesake owner of Hamilton Precious Traders Limited in Dubai.

Speaking in a mix of Hindi and Gujarati, they are heard saying that they are making the recording as they fear for their safety and just want to go back to India but are being held against their will.

“We have signed the document because they will not give back our passports until we sign,” says Jethwa.

These witnesses relate to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) discovery that dummy directors/owners/managers were appointed in a number of overseas companies in Hong Kong and Dubai, though the companies remained under the direct control of Modi.

The charges against the 49-year-old diamond merchant centre around his firms Diamonds R Us, Solar Exports and Stellar Diamonds making fraudulent use of a credit facility offered by the Punjab National Bank (PNB), known as “letters of undertaking” (LoUs).

According to the government of India’s case, a number of PNB staff conspired with Modi to ensure LoUs were issued to these companies without ensuring they were subject to the required credit check, without recording the issuance of the LoUs and without charging the required commission upon the transactions. This resulted in a fraud amounting to nearly USD 2 billion.

Modi claims to have come to the UK ahead of a planned initial public offering (IPO) but an Interpol Red Notice was issued against him before he was traced to a plush rented apartment at Centre Point in central London early last year.

An extradition request from the Indian government was certified by the UK Home Office in February last year before his arrest by Scotland Yard on March 19, 2019. The jeweller remains behind bars at Wandsworth Prison in south-west London since then, failing to get bail despite repeated attempts.

A second extradition request, relating to “causing the disappearance of evidence” and intimidating witnesses or “criminal intimidation to cause death”, was also certified earlier this year. While the hearing to establish a prima facie case against Modi is ongoing in London this week, the extradition trial will conclude only in September once the second part of the case and the defence arguments against prison conditions at Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai are heard.

A Rio de Janeiro judge ruled in favor of closing the grounds after a request from the Rio prosecutor's office asking for a ban on all major events at the facilities until authorities had seen certificates demonstrating their safety.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday filed a reference against 10 people, including former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and former finance minister Miftah Ismail in connection with the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) import contract case. 
 
The anti-graft watchdog submitted the reference in an accountability court in Islamabad. The reference alleged that one firm received benefits of more than Rs 21 billion between March 2015 to September 2019, The Dawn reported. 
 
The reference also stated that the national exchequer will suffer a loss of Rs 47 billion by 2029 due to the contract. 
 
Former Pakistan State Oil (PSO) managing director Sheikh Imranul Haq, former Ogra chairman Saeed Ahmed Khan, Ogra chairperson Uzma Adil Khan, chairman of the Engro group Hussain Dawood, former chairman of Port Qasim Authority (PQA) Agha Jan Akhtar, former member of Ogra Aamir Naseem and former PSO Managing Director Shahid M Islam and Abdul Sammad have been named in the reference. 
 
Abbasi was arrested by the NAB on July 18 in connection with the case, in which he and others are accused of illegally awarding LNG terminal contracts for a period of 15 years to a company of their liking in violation of defined rules, incurring losses to the state exchequer. 
 
While Abbasi and Ismail have been in prison for over four months, Haq secured pre-arrest bail last week from the Islamabad High Court. 
 
In April, the Pakistan government had imposed a travel ban on Abbasi, Ismail and five others in connection with the case.

They did not say how many people were scammed.

"Some of them also pretended to be bankers offering investments," he added.

Police also seized evidence including laptops and computers, Gatot said.
