Nipah virus, spread by fruit bats, causes communicable disease and can be fatal for both animals and humans
In the wake of the Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala, which has claimed 13 lives until now, the Bihar government, Sikkim health department, Madhya Pradesh Health Ministry, and Pudducherry collector office have issued advisories urging the people of their respective states to take precaution against the disease.
The Nipah virus, which is spread by fruit bats, can cause a communicable disease that can be fatal for both animals and humans.
The symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, drowsiness, respiratory illness, disorientation, and mental confusion.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), these signs and symptoms can progress to coma within 24-48 hours.
The Sikkim health department has issued an advisory urging the people to take precaution. "Though there is minimal possibility of Nipah virus in Sikkim, but the people need to take precaution," it said in an advisory yesterday in the wake of Nipah outbreak in Kerala.
The Bihar, Puducherry and Madhya Pradesh governments also issued advisories against Nipah virus and have urged people to take precautions.
