Lok Sabha Election: Ram Temple fails to win Faizabad for BJP
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi worships inside Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a shock defeat from the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat that includes Ayodhya despite Ram Temple's inauguration earlier this year.
Samajwadi Party candidate Awadhesh Prasad got 5,54,289 votes, defeating BJP's Lallu Singh who got 4,99,722 votes.
During the campaigning,Ram Temple remained a highlightas it was expected to provide a big push to BJP, not just in that particular seat, butentire Uttar Pradesh.
Notably, the state has delivered a mandate that the BJP didn't expect.
Uttar Pradesh sends the highest number of MPs to Lok Sabha and witnessed a close contest between the BJP-led NDA and INDIA bloc comprising Samajwadi Party and Congress.

Samajwadi Party won 37 seats while Congress bagged six, winning 43 seats in total.
The NDA alliance included BJP, Apna Dal (Sonelal), Jayant Chaudhary's RLD and OP Rajbhar's Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party. BJP won 33, RLD won two and Apna Dal won one seat. In total, NDA won 36 seats.

Smriti Irani was among the big names who lost the election. Irani, who won the Amethi constituency in 2019, was defeated by Kishori Lal Sharma of Congress.
In a post on X, she said, "Such is life... A decade of my life going from one village to another, building lives, nurturing hope & aspirations, working on infrastructure ― roads, naali, khadanja, bypass, medical college and more. To those who stood by me through loss and victory, I am forever grateful. To those celebrating today, congratulations. And to those asking, "How's the josh?" I say- it's still high, Sir."
Despite the setback in Uttar Pradesh, NDA received majority and declared victory, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanking the people of the country, for "restoring their faith" in the BJP and choosing it as the government at the Centre for a third successive term.
