India's Wayanad sees lowest-ever polling percentage as it voted in Lok Sabha by-election: Report

India's Wayanad sees lowest-ever polling percentage as it voted in Lok Sabha by-election: Report

The Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in the Indian state of Kerala held its by-election on Wednesday (Nov 13). The constituency recorded a voter turnout of 64.72 per cent in the polls, data from the Election Commission of India (ECI) showed.

This turnout was the lowest polling percentage recorded in the constituency since its formation in 2009, as per Indian media reports.

Over 950,000 voters were eligible to vote in Wednesday's by-election.

The top contenders in the Wayanad by-election

The by-election in Wayanad was part of a larger voting process across 31 assembly seats in 10 states. Bypolls were also held for seven assembly seats in Rajasthan,six in West Bengal, and five in Assam among others.

The top contenders in Wayanad were senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra,Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate Satyan Mokeri and Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) Navya Haridas.

The by-election in Wayanad was necessitated after Priyanka Vadra's brother and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi vacated the seat.

'Hope Wayanad will give me the chance to...'

On Wednesday, Priyanka Vadraexuded confidence in winning the by-election and expected that the people of Wayanad would give her a chance to be their representative.

"My expectation is that the people of Wayanad will give me the chance to repay the love and affection they have shown and to work for them and to be their representative. I hope everyone will exercise their democratic right and vote," Vadra told reporters as she visited a polling centre in Wayanad.
