Learjet 45 carrying Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar crashed near Baramati Airport after aborting first landing. Lost control on second approach; all five aboard died
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar died on Wednesday (January 28) in a plane crash that happened near Baramati. The small aircraft, which took off from Mumbai at about 8:10 am, crashed during its second landing attempt at Baramati airport approximately 30 minutes after takeoff. The five people who were on board died, including Pawa,r who was accompanied by two pilots and his security personnel. The scene at the site showed heavy smoke and fire, which created wreckage from the aircraft while ambulances arrived to handle the emergency situation. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that there were no survivors. Ajit Pawar, 66 years old, was the nephew of Nationalist Congress Party founder Sharad Pawar and the cousin of Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule. Pawar is survived by his wife Sunetra and his sons Parth and Jay.
What happened in the plane crash that killed Ajit Pawar?
As the plane neared Baramati in dense morning fog, pilots aborted their first landing attempt after failing to spot the runway clearly. After circling to wait for better conditions, the jet made a second approach. Moments after descending toward the runway, the plane lost control, veered off course, and came down near the runway threshold.
CCTV footage from the airport area shows the aircraft striking the ground and then erupting into flames, with thick black smoke and multiple explosions that quickly engulfed the wreckage. Eyewitnesses described the final moments as chaotic, with the blaze making any rescue action impossible. Flight-tracking data indicated the jet briefly stopped transmitting its position before briefly reappearing, but went silent again shortly before impact. At one point, the aircraft was tracking at over 230 km/h at an altitude above 1 km before the last signal disappeared.
