Excise policy case: Delhi court sends Arvind Kejriwal to judicial custody till July 12

Delhi Court on Saturday (Jun 29) sent Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to judicial custody till July 12 in a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case related to excise policy matter.
Vacation Judge Sunena Sharma of Rouse Avenue Courts passed the order after Kejriwal was produced in court on the expiry of his three days of CBI custody.
The CBI arrested Kejriwal from Tihar jail in connection with the now-scrapped liquor policy earlier this week - on the same day when the Delhi HC stayed the decision to grant regular bail to Kejriwal, previouslyallowed by a trial court.
The CBI had sought the court to place Kejriwal under 14 days of judicial custody, stating that as an influential politician he could tamper with evidence and influence witnesses if released from detention.
The CBI further said in its motion that while Kejriwal has been evasive and dishonest in responding to the agency's inquiries, more jail questioning of him is not necessary at this time.

Notably, Kejriwal was arrested by the CBI on June 26 and remanded to CBI custody till June 29. On Saturday, CBI did not seek an extension of its custody of Kejriwal, but rather asked that he be sent to judicial custody.

Arvind Kejriwal's arrest
The Aam Admi Party (AAP) supremo was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a case about alleged corruption and money laundering in formulating and executing the Delhi government's excise policy.
He was released on bail for a brief period during the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections and addressed several public gatherings while campaigning for AAP before going back to prison a couple of days before the counting of votes on June 4.
The Delhi government had implemented the policy on November 17, 2021. But it was scrapped at the end of September 2022. Corruption allegations have been levelled against the party, which AAP denies. AAP lost all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi.
