Delhi-NCR residents bear humidity and heat due to patchy rainfall throughout July

Delhi is observinghumid and hot weather conditions despite receiving over 200 mm of rain in July, causing inconvenience to residents. The national capital region has been experiencinghigh moisture and low wind speeds with inadequate weather systems. While the city witnessed waterlogged streets in the last week due to heavy rain, the irregular rainfall has resulted in high humidity.

According to experts, the patchy light to moderate rains in Delhi-NCR was due to the monsoon trough remaining in the south of the region, nearer to Central India, as per a Hindustan Times report.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted slight relief for Delhi residents on Wednesday, as the monsoon trough is expected to move closer, bringing rain and respite from the heat.

The average maximum temperature recorded slightly above the long-period average (LPA) in Delhi during July at 35.8 degrees Celsius. However, the heat index or real feel remained at 45.8 degrees Celsius on most days due to high humidity levels.

On Tuesday, Delhi's maximum temperature was measured at 39.3 degrees Celsius, the highest for the month and five degrees more than normal, according to the weather department.

The monsoon trough remained near Central India for 80% of the month, explained Mahesh Palawat, vice president at weather forecasting company Skymet, according to Hindustan Times. This resulted in moisture and cloudy skies but not enough rainfall.

The region on the north of the monsoon trough witnessed easterly humid winds throughout the day. “Delhi-NCR, Haryana, UP and Punjab have all recorded similar weather, owing to this situation,” said Palawat.

Delhi only witnessed heavy rainfall activity between July 22 and 25 this month due to western disturbances. The national capital recorded 203.7 mm of rainfall at Safdarjung this month till 5:30 pm on July 30. While the city saw rainfall for 17 days in the month until now, no heavy spells of rainfall were recorded.

Delhi recorded 243.3 mm of rain in June, mostly due to the heavy rain spell on June 28, which recorded 228.1 mm of rainfall in a single day. The previous year, the city received 384.6 mm of rainfall in July.
