Cyclone Fani made landfall at 8am on Friday close to Puri district in Odishain eastern India, with the area recording wind speeds of 145 kilometres per hour, India's Metrological Department(IMD)said.
Cyclone Warning Division of the IMDsaid the process of landfall will continue for the next three hours.
Rain and strong winds hit Paradip coast, Odisha on Friday morning.Strong winds also hit Visakhapatnam as Cyclone Fani madelandfall inPuri.
The area along Puri is witnessing winds with a speed of 145 kilometres per hour that could reach up to 180-200 kmph, which could bring"extensive damage", the IMDadded.
Authorities in India's east coast in Odisha and West Bengal have evacuated more than one million people out of the path of the "extremely severe cyclone".

All major airports were closed on Friday morning in Odisha and West Bengal and the railway network virtually closed ahead of the arrival of the cyclone.
Thousands of people in West Bengal have been evacuated to safer areas with special teams deployed in villages to ensure safety.
India's Navy has also been positioned in the east coast to ensure relief work reaches people affected by the cyclone on time.
