
TheBombay High Court has suspended gangster Chhota Rajan's life sentenceand granted him bail in theJaya Shetty murder case after a hearing on Wednesday (Oct 23).
A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan directed Rajan to furnish a bond of rupees1,00,000 ($1189.39) for the bail.
Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, popularly known as Chhota Rajan, was convicted and sentenced to life earlier this year for the murder of Jaya Shetty, the owner of the Golden Crown Hotel at Gamdevi in central Mumbai.
The gangster had filed an appeal in the High Court against the conviction. He sought that the sentence be suspended, and he be granted bail in the interim.
Even though the life sentence has been suspended and bail has been granted, Rajan will, as per news agency PTI, continue to remain in jail due to his other criminal cases.
Rajan, already serving a life term for the murder of veteran crime reporter J Dey, is currently lodged at the Tihar jail in Delhi.

The hotelier was killed on May 4, 2001, by two alleged members of Rajan's gang on his orders.
A probe into the murder suggested that Jaya Shetty had received extortion calls from Hemant Pujari, a member of the Chhota Rajan gang, andwas killed for failing to pay the extortion money.
