A timeline of how terror groups in Jammu Kashmir have targeted pilgrims in the past

Pakistan based terror outfit LeT claims responsibility for Reasi attack

After the recent attacks including the Reasi terror attack, Jammu and Kashmir Police held a high-level security review meeting ahead of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra and Mela Kheer Bhawani.

Security forces are working on a major security plan for the Amarnath Yatra which is scheduled to commence on June 29.

Mela Kheer Bhawani festival is scheduled to be held on June 12 and security has already been beefed up across the region. The meeting chaired by Jammu and Kashmir Police's IG also stressed on proper security arrangements for the Eid Ul Adha which is to be celebrated on June 17.

Meanwhile, Security forces have formed a total of 11 teams in Reasi after the terror attack that will investigate the case and will be working on two different axes.

The Jammu and Kashmir police have some leads and inputs that these teams are acting upon.

According to officials , half a dozen people have been detained for questioning in the case. The NIA team led by a DIG visited the area to take stock of the situation as well.

Although this was not the first time that Pilgrims were attacked by the terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier, Multiple terror attacks have taken place mostly on the Amarnath Yatris in the region.

July 2017

On July 10, 2017, a bus carrying Amarnath Yatra Pilgrims was attacked in South Kashmir's Anantnag district. Seven pilgrims were killed in the attack while over a dozen were injured. Most of them belonged to the Gujarat state of India. The Jammu and Kashmir Police had said that the attack was carried out by terror outfit Lashkar Toiba.

July 2006

In 2006, one more attack took place in Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district. A grenade was lobbed at a bus carrying Amarnath Pilgrims at Beehama area in Ganderbal resulting in injuring five pilgrims. The attack was not owned by any terror outfit.

July 2002

One of the biggest attacks on the Pilgrims took place in the year 2002. There were two attacks by the terror groups in 2002. The first attack took place on July 30 in Srinagar when a grenade was lobbed at a taxi carrying pilgrims. Two pilgrims lost their lives in this attack. The second attack took place in South Kashmir's Pahalgam area at the Nunwan base camp. Nine people lost their lives in the attack while over two dozen were injured.

July 2001

The year 2001 was also one of the deadliest with regard to the pilgrims visiting the Amarnath Cave. Terrorists used two Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) to carry out the attacks on pilgrims at Sheshnag Lake near the Amarnath Cave. Thirteen people died and over a dozen were injured in the attack. The causality not only included the Hindu pilgrims but also three Muslim civilians and two security personnel.

August 2000

Around 32 people were killed in 2000 in the Pahalgam area of Amarnath Base Camp after a mass shooting by terrorists. The attack was also carried out by Lashkar e Taiba and is by far considered to be the deadliest. In the attack 21 Hindu pilgrims, seven Muslim shopkeepers and porters and three security officials were among the victims.
