Jammu & Kashmir: Encounter Underway In Srinagar's Khanyar | 2 CRPF & 2 SOG Personnel Injured

Images of terrorists who waged a deadly attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal on Sunday (Oct 20) have surfaced now in local media. The attack targeted a tunnel construction site on the Srinagar-Leh national highway, killing six labourers and a doctor. CCTV footage shows one of the terrorists entering one of the officers’ buildings.

According to sources, he is seen carrying a blue-tagged AK series rifle, which resembles the one observed on weapons used in previous attacks in the South of Pir Panjal region.

“This similarity raises concerns about potential links between the incidents and could indicate a pattern in the armament used by these terrorist&nbsp;groups,” the source said.

The attackers, believed to be two, opened indiscriminate fire on the group, comprising both locals and non-locals.

Two labourers died on the spot, whereas the doctor and four other labourers were pronounced dead later. Five people were critically injured and are undergoing treatment now.

According to media reports, the attack was carried out by the terrorist group The Resistance Front (TRF), which is an offshoot of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that some of those individuals were working on a key infrastructure project and slammed the terror attack.

Taking to X, CM Abdullah wrote, "Very sad news of a dastardly &amp; cowardly attack on non-local labourers at Gagangir in Sonamarg region. These people were working on a key infrastructure project in the area. 2 have been killed &amp; 2-3 more have been injured in this militant attack. I strongly condemn this attack on unarmed innocent people &amp; send my condolences to their loved ones."

In a similar attack on October 18, a migrant worker from Bihar was killed in Shopian district.

The bullet-riddled body of the worker was found by locals in the Waduna area of Zainapora in Shopian.

Later, officials identified the victim as Ashok Chauhan, who was living in the Sangam area of Anantnag.

India: Image of terrorist behind Ganderbal attack surfaces, his AK series rifle raises concerns

After the recent attacks including the Reasi terror attack, Jammu and Kashmir Police held a high-level security review meeting ahead of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra and Mela Kheer Bhawani.

Security forces are working on a major security plan for the Amarnath Yatra which is scheduled to commence on June 29.&nbsp;

Mela Kheer Bhawani festival is scheduled to be held on June 12 and security has already been beefed up across the region. The meeting chaired by Jammu and Kashmir Police's IG also stressed on proper security arrangements for the Eid Ul Adha which is to be celebrated on June 17.

Meanwhile, Security forces have formed a total of 11 teams in Reasi after the terror attack that will investigate the case and will be working on two different axes.&nbsp;

The Jammu and Kashmir police have some leads and inputs that these teams are acting upon.

According to officials , half a dozen people have been detained for questioning in the case. The NIA team led by a DIG visited the area to take stock of the situation as well.

Although this was not the first time that Pilgrims were attacked by the terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.

On July 10, 2017, a bus carrying Amarnath Yatra Pilgrims was attacked in South Kashmir's Anantnag district. Seven pilgrims were killed in the attack while over a dozen were injured. Most of them belonged to the Gujarat state of India. The Jammu and Kashmir Police had said that the attack was carried out by terror outfit Lashkar Toiba.

July 2006

In 2006, one more attack took place in Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district. A grenade was lobbed at a bus carrying Amarnath Pilgrims at Beehama area in Ganderbal resulting in injuring five pilgrims. The attack was not owned by any terror outfit.

One of the biggest attacks on the Pilgrims took place in the year 2002. There were two attacks by the terror groups in 2002. The first attack took place on July 30 in Srinagar when a grenade was lobbed at a taxi carrying pilgrims. Two pilgrims lost their lives in this attack. The second attack took place in South Kashmir's Pahalgam area at the Nunwan base camp. Nine people lost their lives in the attack while over two dozen were injured.

The year 2001 was also one of the deadliest with regard to the pilgrims visiting the Amarnath Cave. Terrorists used two Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) to carry out the attacks on pilgrims at Sheshnag Lake near the Amarnath Cave. Thirteen people died and over a dozen were injured in the attack. The causality not only included the Hindu pilgrims but also three Muslim civilians and two security personnel.

August 2000

Around 32 people were killed in 2000 in the Pahalgam area of Amarnath Base Camp after a mass shooting by terrorists. The attack was also carried out by Lashkar e Taiba and is by far considered to be the deadliest. In the attack 21 Hindu pilgrims, seven Muslim shopkeepers and porters and three security officials were among the victims.
