Ipswich Town seal Premier League return after 22 years with last day win against Huddersfield in Championship

English second division side Ipswich Town will be back in the Premier League after 22 years after they beat relegated Huddersfield Town 2-0 on the final day of the Championship league season on Saturday (May 4).Playing at home at Portman Road, Ipswich needed a point on thefinal day of the seasonto seal their return to the Premier League.However, with the team in great spirit and form, they secured three points to enter the top flight.

Ipswich back in Premier League

Going into the final day, with a poor goal difference compared to third placed Leeds United, Ipswich were in danger of missing out on promotion had they lost and Leeds United won on the final day. However, there was no rush in the proceedings at the Portman Road on SaturdaywithWes Burns opening the scoring in the 27th minute. The goal also meant that Huddersfield’s chance of mathematical survival was over.

The lead was doubled in the 48th minute when Omari Hutchinson converted for their side’s second goal after three minutes into the second half.With Huddersfield looking out of ideas and no chance of survival,there wasno resistanceoffered by themwhichsealed a 2-0 win for the home side.Ipswich’s jobwas further smoothenedby Leeds’ 2-1 defeat to Southampton.

With the win, The Blues ended with 96 points from the 46-game league season, scoring 92 league goals along the way,and gained promotion from the third tier last season.

Credit goes to manager Kieran McKennawhotook the side’s reign in 2021 when Ipswich were 11th in League One (third tier of English football). However, back-to-back promotionsdomean they will compete against the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and other top teams in the Premier League.

Birmingham City relegated to LeagueOne

While there was a joy for one Ipswich, Birmingham City had a sorrowful day after theywere relegatedto League One. Needing a win and other teams around them to drop points on the final day, Birmingham did not get a helping hand and suffered relegation. They beat Norwich City 1-0 and ended the season with 50 points from 46 matches. However, wins on the final day of the season for Blackburn Rovers, Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield Wednesday meant Birmingham’s win was academicandwererelegatedto the third tier of English football.
