Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar's The Royals is garnering attention for the wrong reasons. Released on Netflix, the new romantic comedy-drama The Royals is making headlines for varied reasons, and one of the most discussed parts is over its alleged misrepresentation of Indian royals.

Directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana, the series features an ensemble cast including Zeenat Aman, Sakshi Tanwar, Nora Fatehi, Vihaan Samat, Dino Morea, and Milind Soman.

Backlash against The Royals

Blake Lively has denied recent claims by her It Ends With Us co-star Justin Baldoni and his legal team that she intimidated Taylor Swift into supporting her against him in their upcoming trial, which is scheduled to begin in March 2026. Swift, a long-time friend of Blake Lively, lent her voice for a cameo in the movie and was recently subpoenaed.

Lively and Baldoni locked in legal battle

The issue started when Lively sued Justin Baldoni in December, accusing him of “disturbing” and “unprofessional” behaviour on set, along with orchestrating a retaliatory smear campaign. Baldoni has strongly denied the allegations and, in January, filed a countersuit against Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, for defamation and extortion.

In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Lively's lawyer denied the claim, saying, “This is categorically false. We unequivocally deny all of these so-called allegations, which are cowardly sourced to supposed anonymous sources, and completely untethered from reality.”

Banned for vulgarity, then redubbed for a comeback

The show became popular in Japan thanks to its clever writing and comedy that relied on a lot of sexual innuendo. When it aired in India initially, this was kept in and helped create a surge of popularity for the show. But this would eventually lead to the show getting banned in 2008 by the Indian Censor Board, citing its vulgarity, use of bad language and inappropriate content.

But thanks to the popularity of the show, it was back on Indian TV screens in 2009. But this time around, all the sexual jokes and references were cut and redubbed, which ended up making the Indian version of the show completely different from what the original makers intended.
