When Mirzapur: The Movie was announced, I have to admit I was sceptical. The film, an extension of the hugely popular web series Mirzapur, was supposed to take audiences back in time, somewhere in the middle of the first season. Loyal audiences of the series have, over the years, already progressed a lot into the Mirzapur universe. Some key characters are now long dead in the series, and the trajectories of Munna, Guddu, Golu, and Kaleen Bhaiyaa have also taken very different turns. Was it necessary to make a movie and go back to the origin story again, I wondered. Happy to report that my doubts and scepticism were pleasantly put to rest as I watched Mirzapur the movie. The film takes you back in time, somewhere in the middle of the first season and introduces new characters and adds a fresh twist to the story. The result is a deeply engaging story of power and greed, but also of validation and fighting for love.

The plot of Mirzapur

Most are aware of the premise, but let's refresh your memories. Akhandanand Tripathi (Pankaj Tripathi) urf Kaleen Bhaiya runs Mirzapur. The man wields power through his legal and illegal businesses and dictates terms of the state of Purvanchal. His son, Munna (Divyenndu), pines for his father's love and validation, which seldom comes. Kaleen has more trust in Guddu and Bablu Pandit. Guddu, with his might, is the formidable shield that Kaleen needs, while Bablu's calculative and sharp brain is what the master admires. Naturally, Munna is envious of the brothers, who will go lengths to prove their loyalty just in order to get more power in the state.

While the tussle for power with the neighbouring Jaunpur continues, a new entrant in the form of Babban Babua (Ravi Kishan) adds more drama to the power tussle. Babban wants to rule Mirzapur and wants to eliminate Kaleen and his clan. Disguised as a big seller of drugs, Babban makes an entry into Mirzapur, but will it be that easy to eliminate the formidable Akhandanand Tripathi from the throne of Mirzapur?

What works and what does not

Nostalgia works majorly for Mirzapur: The Movie. The film brings back almost all the actors from the first season except Vikrant Massey, who is replaced by Jeetendra Kumar as the calculative Bablu Pandit. Jeetendra fills the big shoes well and appears at home in the ensemble film. Pankaj Tripathi once again reiterates how his performance as Kaleen Bhaiya is one for the history books. Years later, Tripathi, with a stupendous repertoire of work, will still be remembered for playing the ice-cool, calculative Mafia boss in this series.

Divyenndu

But Mirzapur doesn’t belong to Tripathi alone. It is just as much Ali Fazal's and Divyenndu's. Both actors are stunning in their performances. Ali plays the beast Guddu Pandit with such nonchalance that you forget the actor behind the character. Similarly, Divyendu as the angsty, witty Munna Bhaiya is also brilliant. Mirzapur, the series, worked for these three actors, and the film too belongs to them.

Man of the moment and the internet’s favourite meme inspiration, Ravi Kishan, too is splendid as the scheming Babban. A man who is a lover, who appears to be respectful towards women but is evil in his own way, Kishan’s character is the most interesting addition to the Mirzapur universe, and the actor makes it his own.

Mirzapur the movie also works for its ensemble cast. From Mohit Malik to Rasika Duggal, to Kulbhushan Kharbanda to Sheeba Chaddha- all the actors make the film and the universe of Mirzapur alive. Even the tiniest cameos (including one by Priyanshu Painyuli) and brief appearances are all well etched out.

Written by Puneet Krishna, the film captures the heartland and its dynamics well. You have to be familiar with the colloquial language and the way people speak in the heartland to fully enjoy the Mirzapur universe. But punchlines are in galore, and amid the violence there is sly humour that keeps you entertained.

I wish the women had more to do. Shriya Pilagoankar, Shweta Tripathi, Harshita Gaur, and Sonal Chauhan have very little to do. Unlike the series, Shweta Tripathi’s role in the film is a limited one. The makers also don’t use Rasika Duggal to her full potential.

Mirzapur is an easy ride but becomes chaotic at the climax. You know how the story will pan out because you have watched the series, so the predictability can kill the surprise element slightly. The film, though, ends on a note of a possible sequel and perhaps expansion of the franchise on the big screen.

Final Verdict

Mirzapur: The Movie gives a fresh perspective to a known story. The film takes a fresh spin on love, validation, and brotherhood even as the main plot centres around the fight for the throne of Mirzapur. The film works for its music, its engaging plot and above all, its fabulous cast. Kudos to director Gurmeet Singh for making each actor deliver their best in the film.

It doesn't matter if you are a fan of the series or not; go watch Mirzapur: The Movie. It's full paisa vasool entertainment.

The Miss Grand International 2026 event has taken an unexpected twist after the pageant organisation changed India's role as the host country and shifted to Thailand just weeks before the commencement of the event. The organisation even issued an official statement citing reasons behind the major decision.

Why did India lose the hosting rights to Thailand for Miss Grand International 2026?

In an announcement issued on September 3, the official Instagram page of Miss Grand International shared a post with a clip and wrote in the lengthy caption, "Miss Grand International would like to officially announce that the organisation has decided to discontinue all activities related to Miss Grand International 2026 in India and relocate the remaining activities of the competition to Thailand. This decision has been made following the host country's failure to fulfil the contractual commitments and standards agreed upon with Miss Grand International."

In continuation with the statement, the decision was taken because the host country allegedly failed to meet contractual commitments and standards agreed upon with the organisation. The pageant body said its agreement required the host country to provide five-star hospitality and maintain five-star production standards throughout the competition.

Also Read: Nina Dobrev faces awkward red carpet moment at Venice Film Festival as viral video sparks debate

The organisation said these requirements were intended to ensure the contestants' safety, comfort and overall experience while also maintaining the professional standards associated with the international pageant. The organisation added that discussions and efforts had taken place to address the situation, but the agreed standards were ultimately not met. Following the decision, MGI confirmed that the rest of the 2026 competition will be held in Thailand, the organisation's home country.

Previous controversies of Miss Grand International

Miss Grand International (MGI) has faced several high-profile controversies regarding title resignations, host country cancellations, and public disputes between titleholders and organisation executives like president Nawat Itsaragrisil.

In May 2025, Rachel Gupta (India's first winner of the pageant) announced she was stepping down as Miss Grand International 2024, citing a toxic environment, false promises, and alleged harassment. President Nawat Itsaragrisil also publicly criticised her online, leading to widespread backlash.

During the 2024 event, Miss Grand Myanmar's team removed her crown and sash on stage following her second runner-up placement, leading to a dramatic falling out and public remarks from Nawat regarding the national director and placement expectations.

Also Read: BLACKPINK Lisa imitating Miss Grand Thailand’s viral dance | Watch

MGI terminated its franchise agreement with Cambodia in late 2024 after disagreements over hosting and local coordination, resulting in the withdrawal of their candidate, Sotheary Bee. Just weeks after the commencement of the beauty pageant, the organisation of Miss Grand International announced that instead of India, the event will be hosted by Thailand. Read to know the reason behind the cancellation.

This decision has been made following the host country's failure to fulfil the contractual commitments and standards agreed upon with Miss Grand International." In continuation with the statement, the decision was taken because the host country allegedly failed to meet contractual commitments and standards agreed upon with the organisation. The pageant body said its agreement required the host country to provide five-star hospitality and maintain five-star production standards throughout the competition. The organisation added that discussions and efforts had taken place to address the situation, but the agreed standards were ultimately not met. Following the decision, MGI confirmed that the rest of the 2026 competition will be held in Thailand, the organisation's home country.

The reel was captioned, "In the pre-Instagram days, a Bengali actor held sway over people’s minds. Today is his 100th birthday. My tribute to Mahanayak!" It further continued with PM Modi's voiceover, which heard him saying, "Uttam Kumar was a versatile actor who became a mainstay in the hearts of his audience. Film lovers say that Satyajit Ray wrote the script of Nayak The Hero with Uttam Kumar in mind. Ray shared how Uttam Kumar played the part with dignity and incredible emotional depth. He worked hard to make sure that the character came alive on screen."

He concluded by saying, “With his ease, Uttam Kumar ji was also known for his philanthropy. I recall that when I was doing a roadshow in Kolkata, I passed by his house and was gifted a painting of him by a fan. I want to extend my deepest tribute to Mahanayak Uttam Kumar ji. May he stay in our hearts forever.”

Also Read: PM Modi pays tribute to Mahanayak Uttam Kumar on his birth centenary

About Uttam Kumar

Uttam Kumar was one of the most celebrated actors in Indian cinema and is widely regarded as the greatest star of Bengali films. Born as Arun Kumar Chatterjee on September 3, 1926, the star completed his schooling at South Suburban School in Kolkata and later attended Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration for higher education.

Also Read: Uttam Kumar Statue Sparks Political Storm in Bengal | Mamata Banerjee Faces Fresh TMC Crisis

In 1948, he took a step forward in his acting career by appearing in Nitin Bose's film Drishtidan. However, it did not do well, and he made his comeback with the 1953 hit film Sharey Chuattar, in which he first starred alongside Suchitra Sen and became a household name.

Over many years, he showcased his screen presence and versatility, earned the title of Mahanayak, and remains an iconic figure in Bengali culture. Kumar acted in over 200 films and delivered several memorable performances in classics such as Saptapadi, Harano Sur, Nayak, and Chowringhee.

Uttam Kumar's contribution to Indian cinema went beyond acting, as he also worked as a producer, director, and playback singer. In 1968, he became the first Indian actor to win the National Film Award for Best Actor for Chiriakhana and Antony Firingee.

In his personal life, Kumar married Gauri Chatterjee in 1948 and had one son, Gautam Chatterjee. Due to personal strain, they lived separately but never divorced. Later, in 1963, he started a long-term live-in relationship with actress Supriya Devi and lived with her for 17 years until he passed away on July 24, 1980, at the age of 53, from a heart attack.

Insidious- Out of the further ending explained: What happens to Gemma, Maya and Cyrus?

Human trafficking, a grim reality of our present time, has become a favourite theme for Bollywood. After Mardaani and Delhi Crime Season 2, Netflix’s new film Gandhari, featuring Taapsee Pannu, delves into the same theme. Written by Kanika Dhillon and directed by Devashish Makhija, Gandhari has Pannu playing a blind mother in search of her missing daughter in a fictitious town in Bengal. While looking for her daughter, she stumbles upon a larger network of child trafficking. And while the premise of Gandhari is very real and thus makes for an engaging thriller, in reality, the film’s execution makes it falter ever so often.

What’s the story of Gandhari

Bani (Pannu), Gopal (Ishwak Singh) and their daughter set out from their home for a summer vacation somewhere in West Bengal. As the train halts at Joypura, a small town in the state, their daughter gets kidnapped at a crowded station. Bani attempts to stop the kidnapper, running through a crowded station, but gets hit by a steel rod and goes blind.

Gopal and Bani lodge a complaint at the local police station; however, after days of waiting at the thana for some leads, they decide to stay back in the town to find their daughter. For Bani, it is an uphill task initially, having to know and acclimatise herself to new city and surroundings and become a part of the crowd, to get information about her daughter.

Gopal meanwhile takes up a job at the local toll booth, hoping to get a trace of his daughter.

While the distressed couple try their best to look for their daughter, Kabir (Jatin Sarna), a special investigative officer, comes to Joypura to investigate the case of missing children.

As the investigation deepens, an unsettling truth emerges: virtually everyone is hiding something. Joypura is a town built on disguise, where residents seamlessly slip between personas and play-act their roles. Beneath these carefully crafted masks lies a dark, intricate web of secrets—invisible to the outside world, yet driving everything from the shadows. Everyone appears suspicious, from the NGO head (Swastika Mukherjee) to the friendly neighbour (Chhaya Kadam) to the local cops- all seem to be hiding something and even reporting to Bhaiji (Prashant Narayan), who remains in the shadows.

What works and what does not

If Kanika Dhillon had set out to make a film on a heroine fighting a lonely battle against a powerful nexus, Gandhari does a fairly decent job of serving that narrative. Taapsee Pannu plays a lone warrior who will go to any lengths to find her daughter- even play act to be blind, just to avoid being spotted. While the screenplay gives ample opportunity to Taapsee Pannu to showcase her talent as an actor, the story and logic take a back seat.

While the film shows Bani hunting for clues and going into uncharted and dangerous territories in order to find her daughter, in reality, clues come to Bani. Twists in the narrative are manufactured, and writers do not attempt to make the story logical and plausible.

Actors like Ishwak Singh, Mita Vashisht, and Swastika Mukherjee. Chhaya Kadam are all wasted in a poorly written story. So much of the narrative is in flashback, and the twists in the tale are plain random.

I also hate the cultural appropriation that Bollywood indulges in when portraying a specific community. Once it is established that the story is based in Bengal, one doesn't have to forcefully add Bengali words in Hindi dialogues. Or use an extra ‘O’ in all words. Or make the community worship the occult just to make them appear dark and mysterious.

A portion of the film has the entire town, dressed in disguise, worshipping a Chaumukhi Ma. The scene is near the climax and has key characters dressed in masks and paint just to blend into the crowd. So unnecessary and so cringe- it adds nothing to the narrative.

Final Verdict

Watching Gandhari is a deeply frustrating exercise. It takes up a theme that has already been talked about it films and series before, adds a bit of Kahaani flavour with Bengal serving as a backdrop while a mother goes around looking for her missing daughter, adds pointless twists that do not help the narrative and ultimately makes the film overdramatic.

It is a pity that the film has Devasish Makhija as a director who has in the past made brilliant films like Ajji and Bhonsle. So many of the film’s subplots have loose ends, and so much is left unexplained. In the end, it is one woman show- fighting the odds, solving a murky case- all alone.

Gandhaari is streaming on Netflix.

In her latest release, Gandhari, Taapsee Pannu turns in a strong solo performance as a mother fighting against a massive nexus. However, the film falls flat due to illogical plot twists, heavy-handed cultural stereotypes, and manufactured drama.

Gandhari review: Taapsee Pannu’s thriller is too dramatic to work

Bhuvan Bam, the well-renowned YouTuber, is set to star in the historical period drama series The Revolutionaries, which premieres worldwide on September 11, 2026, on Prime Video. As excitement builds for the upcoming historical drama, Bhuvan gave his fans a behind-the-scenes look from the set, sharing the challenges he faced while bringing it to life. The YouTuber-turned-actor recently recalled a nerve-racking moment from the set when he had to ride a wild horse.

Bhuvan Bam on riding a wild horse

For Bhuvan Bam, stepping into the shoes of Rash Behari Bose in Prime Video’s upcoming period drama, The Revolutionaries, came with its fair share of challenges, but none quite as unexpected as horse riding. While embodying the fearless revolutionary came naturally, horse riding was an entirely different story. After a rather unfortunate first lesson involving a runaway horse at Juhu Beach, Bhuvan spent the shoot trying to avoid getting back in the saddle until he found an unexpected solution for the show’s action sequence.

Recounting the hilarious experience, Bhuvan shared, “So they told me to learn horse riding. It was a horse that was used for wedding functions, and it took me to Juhu Beach for training. So basically, what happened was that the caretaker was on a phone call and the horse simply ran off with me. That was my first day of horse-riding lessons. If I had fallen from there, I would probably still be bedridden today. I was literally hanging from the horse, and I was shivering for the next three days. The incident reached Sir (Nikkhil Advani) and he took stock of the situation, and I opened up to him and told him that ‘Sir, the horse took me away without my permission! Its leg was stuck in some plastic, and it just kept running with me!’

Also Read: Nikkhil Advani’s period drama The Revolutionaries gets September release date, meet the principal characters

He further shared, “The horse-riding scene hadn’t come up yet and every day, I would wake up thinking, ‘Today I’ll tell Sir. Today I’ll finally gather the courage and tell him that I can’t do horse riding.’ Then there was a day when one scene went really well and sir was extremely happy. I thought, ‘Today he is in a good mood,’ so I went to him and said, ‘Sir, can I tell you something? Please don’t make me ride the horse. Every day I’m haunted by the thought that the horse might take me away again.’”
