The makers of Insidious came back with the sixth instalment in the franchise titled Insidious: Out of the Further. The supernatural movie, which is released in cinemas in August 2026, serves as a sequel to the 2023 film Insidious: The Red Door. However, this latest film doesn't just bring the terrifying further; it introduces a new kind of supernatural threat. By the time the credits roll, Gemma is forced to make a desperate choice to save Maya, while the truth about her mother's past changes everything she thought she knew. But, before we delve into what happens later, let's delve in to know the story and the reason behind the terrifying occurrences.
What happens in Insidious: Out of the Further?
The plot begins with a mother named Ingrid looking pale and scared, waiting for her daughter Gemma to come back from school. However, Gemma senses something is wrong with her mother, giving the outer appearance. After a brief conversation between the duo, Gemma's mother tries to hurt her daughter, but before anything could happen, Ingrid kills herself.
The scene shifts to twenty years later, showing Gemma becoming a dental hygienist and raising her daughter Maya in her childhood home and dating Nick, a police officer. While walking Maya from school, Gemma sees three elderly people walking down the sidewalk but senses that something is wrong with them. Dismising her thoughts, the mother-daughter duo spend their time. However, one fine day, Gemma astral projects and is found haunted by visions of Ingrid's suicide and then haunted by the elderly people, only to discover later that she brought back something from the dream, hinting at something more sinister awaiting her.

The next day, during her work hours, Gemma sees one of the people for the trio and again astral projects, which later showcases one of the spirits, who is the strongest and the one who wants her for a plan, which is unimaginable. But being saved by Elise and one conversation later with her in the film brings out a major revelation that, through the Further, it reveals that Ingrid was dealing with the same supernatural threat that eventually came after Gemma.
But, things go chaotic; after Cyrus realises that Maya has inherited the Courier ability, Gemma's daughter becomes his new target. While Gemma is dealing with the supernatural threat, Cyrus manages to use Maya as a bridge between the two worlds. The situation quickly spirals as more entities begin crossing into the living world.
What happens to Gemma and Cyrus?
Instead of trying to destroy Cyrus directly, she reverses the direction of the connection between the two worlds. With Maya in danger and the house overwhelmed by supernatural entities, Gemma uses her Courier powers to send the entire house — along with Cyrus and the invading spirits, back into the Further, saving her daughter from being killed.
Cyrus initially appears to have been defeated when he is dragged back into the Further. But his own followers soon realise that he has failed them. Cyrus had promised the spirits that he could give them access to the living world and ultimately provide the freedom they wanted. Once they understand that he has failed, they turn against him and tear him apart. However, this does not mark the absolute end of Cyrus.
The ending with a new revelation in the mid-credit scene!
The mid-credits sequence delivers one final shock. Cyrus is shown still trapped within the Further, strapped into a dentist's chair. The horrifying Dead Dentist torments him while other supernatural entities watch. The scene then brings back Keyface, the red-door-associated entity previously seen in Insidious: The Last Key. Keyface closes the red door, leaving Cyrus imprisoned inside the Further.
With Cyrus not entirely finished, the main ending suggests that he remains trapped in the Further. His punishment also leaves the possibility that the character could return if the franchise chooses to revisit his story.
Written and directed by Jacob Chase, Insidious: Out of the Further stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea and Maisie Richardson-Sellers, with Lin Shaye reprising her role from the previous films. The film's score is composed by Joseph Bishara, who returned to the franchise after composing the first five films in the series.
