Internationally acclaimed sitarist Purbayan Chatterjee feels the younger generation is quite interested in classical music, contrary to popular belief. Chatterjee’s sitar piece in Prime Video web series Bandish Bandits 2 went viral on social media, bringing a new kind of audience and fan following for the musician. Chatterjee feels classical music needs to be presented in such a way that it connects with the audience.

Chatterjee’s calendar is busy. He is on a multi-city tour in India, taking his music and new album Feathered Creatures to a wider audience and performing live. He is also collaborating on The Beatles Biopic and has been instrumental in training Farhan Akhtar, who is all set to play Pandit Ravi Shankar in the film series by Sam Mendes. WION chatted up with Purbayan Chatterjee about his music, new album and recreating Pandit Ravi Shankar’s music on screen.

Excerpts from the interview:

1) Tell us about your new album, Feathered Creatures.

Feathered Creatures is probably one of the most adventurous musical journeys I’ve taken so far. It’s a collaboration with the phenomenal Mark Lettieri from Snarky Puppy, and the music moves freely between raga, groove, progressive harmony, funk, electronica and complete musical mischief. We weren’t trying to “fuse” genres in a calculated way, we simply allowed our musical languages to coexist naturally. What excites me most is that the sitar isn’t treated like an exotic guest appearance here. It drives the narrative. Sometimes it whispers like an old khayal vocalist, and sometimes it behaves like it secretly joined a rock band after midnight. The album is cinematic, emotional and rhythmically restless, much like modern life itself, except hopefully with better tuning.

2) You are also collaborating on The Beatles Biopic, where Farhan Akhtar is playing the late Pandit Ravi Shankar. How did the project happen for you? Are you nervous about recreating Pandit Ravi Shankar’s music on screen?

When a project connected to Pandit Ravi Shankar and The Beatles enters your life, the first reaction is excitement… and the second is mild panic. Ravi ji wasn’t just a musician; he was a cultural bridge between East and West. Recreating that world carries enormous responsibility. I was contacted through Anurag Rao, via Shankar Mahadevan ji, because Farhan Akhtar wanted to learn the sitar for the role. Farhan and I met, and later, my student Ruthvik Rao began working with him regularly. Even today, Farhan occasionally calls me about tuning configurations or nuances of the instrument, and I’m genuinely impressed by how seriously he has approached the role. Portraying a towering personality like Pandit Ravi Shankar is never easy, but I’m very proud that his legacy is reaching mainstream cinema in such a meaningful way.

What excites you most about collaborating with this line-up, and what can audiences expect from the musical experience?

This line-up is dangerous in the best possible way. Rakesh Chaurasia brings breathtaking melodic fluidity, Ojas Adhiya has remarkable rhythmic maturity, and Shikhar Naad adds an entirely different percussive energy and sonic texture. What excites me most is unpredictability. Indian classical music is at its finest when it’s alive in the moment, not over-rehearsed into politeness. Audiences can expect deep ragas, high-energy rhythmic conversations, spontaneous improvisation, and moments where we genuinely surprise each other on stage. Also, with this many rhythmic minds involved, there’s a real possibility that even the tanpura may start improvising.

4) Your piece in Bandish Bandits went viral back when it was released. What was the feedback that you got? And how did you come on board for the series?

The response was overwhelming because it reached people far beyond the traditional classical music audience. I had teenagers messaging me saying, “I don’t know what raga this is, but why am I emotional?” which is honestly one of the best compliments a musician can receive. One of the most special moments was when Shankar Mahadevan ji told me that “Garaj Garaj” had become almost like an anthem for college-going youngsters across the country. That really showed me that Indian classical music can still connect deeply with younger audiences without compromising its essence. I’m extremely grateful to Shankar Mahadevan ji, Soumil Shringarpure and Anand Tiwari for giving me the opportunity to contribute to such a powerful project, and also for making the central character of the series a sitar player.

5) At a time when attention span has been limited to a reel, do you feel the youth is disassociating from classical music?

I actually think the opposite is happening. The format has changed, but curiosity hasn’t disappeared. Young listeners consume music differently today, faster, visually and algorithmically, but when they encounter authenticity and emotional depth, they still respond powerfully. The challenge for classical musicians is not whether young people have patience. The challenge is whether we are presenting the art form in a language that feels alive today. You can’t blame someone for scrolling past a badly presented masterpiece. Even Beethoven would probably need decent lighting and subtitles in 2026. I’ve seen packed concerts, viral raga clips, and young musicians obsessing over tala structures online. Classical music isn’t dying, it’s simply changing clothes.

6) Who has been your biggest inspiration in music? And how has it reflected in your work?

My biggest inspirations begin with the great masters of Indian classical music, especially Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, Ustad Vilayat Khan, and, of course, my own gurus and lineage, who taught me that music is a lifelong spiritual and intellectual discipline, not merely performance. At the same time, I’ve been deeply influenced by artists outside the traditional classical ecosystem, musicians like Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Zakir Hussain, Jordan Rudess, and several artists from jazz, progressive rock and world music. Those influences reflect in the way I approach harmony, arrangement and sonic storytelling. I’ve never believed that tradition and experimentation are enemies. To me, tradition is like strong WiFi; if the connection is stable, you can travel anywhere.

https://www.wionews.com/videos/paresh-pahuja-on-dooron-dooron-going-viral-imtiaz-ali-power-of-manifestation-8943140/embed

Renowned sitarist Purbayan Chatterjee chats up with WION on the influence of classical music among the younger generation, mentoring Farhan Akhtar as he prepares for The Beatles biopic and the viral track of Bandish Bandits.

Excerpts from the interview: 1) Tell us about your new album, Feathered Creatures.

Instead, it requires court approval. You have to submit all medical records of failed attempts to the court, and they decide whether you are eligible. If approved, all required medical tests are conducted at a government hospital through the court’s process. She revealed that she had to stand in line to undergo these tests. After that, you are called to court to meet the judge. The court takes time to verify if all the documents are legitimate and if the couple meets the eligibility criteria. There has been extensive documentation required throughout the process.

He-Man still has many fans around the world. A muscle-bound hero of 1980's pop culture, who is remembered by many as a toy line and animated series. But director Travis Knight brought him back to the big screen with Masters of the Universe to treat the audience to a combination of fantasy, science fiction, action, and comedy while retaining the colorful nostalgia that longtime associate with Eternia. But is the action-packed film worth watching in theatres? Let's decode.

Plot of Masters of the Universe

The film revolves around a young prince, Adam, played by Nicholas Galitzine, who belongs to the royal family of Eternia. While his father, King Randor, desperately wants him to become strong and defend his kingdom, Adam is physically weak and struggles to compete with warriors around him.

Masters of the Universe also introduces Duncan (Idris Elba), the commander of the royal guard, and his daughter Teela (Camila Mendes), who grows up around Adam.

Also Read: Angelina Jolie birthday special: A look at her early life, best movies, net worth and more

But before Adam can prove himself, Eternia comes under attack from the evil Skeletor (Jared Leto), who launches a devastating assault on the kingdom. As chaos begins, Adam escapes to the Earth along with the legendary Sword of Power and a promise to return.

Fifteen years later, Adam is a grown man who has a corporate human resources job. Nobody believes his stories about being a prince from another world, and he struggles to fit into ordinary life. But one fine day, everything changes when he discovers the Sword of Power and reunites him with Teela, who takes him back to Eternia.

The rest of the film focuses on his mission to save the Sword of Power and defeat Skeletor, along with his small group left after years of war.

Masters of the Universe also features Skeletor's loyal ally Evil-Lyn (Alison Brie), who remains by his side as the villain continues his pursuit of ultimate power.

Also Read: Diddy to Ben Affleck: Why Jennifer Lopez's romances continue to fascinate fans

The film also features some side yet important characters as well, such as Morena Baccarin, James Purefoy, Charlotte Riley, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, and more.

What works in the film

One of the strongest aspects of the film is Nicholas Galitzine's portrayal of Adam. I liked how the makers presented him as a vulnerable young man burdened by self-doubt, rather than a traditional macho man. The actor has perfectly managed to carry all sides of Adam, including awkwardness, humor, and heroism, even though the script doesn't always support his growth.

Another likeable thing about the film is its strong VFX. Eternia looks impressive with bright colours and a larger-than-life aesthetic that is associated with the franchise.

The action sequence is consistently strong throughout the film.

Personally, I also enjoyed watching Jared Leto as Skeletor. He remains cruel and entertaining throughout the film, just like one could expect from a comic book character. His exaggerated personality and some sarcastic remarks add to the movie's most enjoyable moments.

Also Read: Love Island USA season 8: All about its cast, filming location and 2026 schedule

Last but not least, Idris Elba brings authority as Duncan, and Camila Mendes and Alison Brie also deserve appreciation as the cast remains committed throughout the film, despite lesser screen space.

Things that disappoint in the film

While Adam's character is praiseworthy, the narrative frequently makes him less effective. For example, He-Man spends much of the film failing repeatedly, yet once he gains access to the Sword of Power, he suddenly becomes the most powerful man. I felt so till the last fight scene.

While I'm not an avid follower of the He-Man universe, it feels like all the supporting actors are underused and showcased as sidekicks.

Another point that needs to be highlighted is inconsistent character development. Adam's personality changes drastically from scene to scene. In one scene, he is a witty young man, and in the next, he is a serious inspirational leader.

Also Read: David Beckham to join Hollywood legends with Walk of Fame star

The same can be said about the film's tone, which constantly jumps between comedy, action, tragedy, and emotional drama. A character may die in one scene, only for the next scene to feature jokes and light-hearted banter.

I could clearly feel that several parts of the film rush toward the next action sequence or comedic exchange instead of allowing emotional moments to resonate. Additionally, Teela, Evil-Lyn, the Sorceress, and several other supporting characters feel underutilised, despite being important figures within the mythology.
Britain is going to witness another royal wedding soon, as Peter Phillips is all set to wed Harriet Sperling. However, the wedding is reportedly going to be a very private affair, unlike the previous grand royal wedding. According to reports, Peter, the late Queen Elizabeth’s eldest grandchild, will have only a select few members of the royal family attend his intimate wedding and the guest list reportedly will not include Prince Harry.

Prince Harry not invited to Peter Phillips’ wedding?

According to royal commentator Emily Nash, Peter Phillips and Prince Harry have reportedly not been in contact for several years, which led to a natural distancing. Nash spoke to Page Six and explained, “I think it comes down to interpersonal relationships, doesn't it? What we were told was that Peter hadn't spoken to Harry for the last few years. And so it sort of has been a natural cooling off and he wasn't invited as a result. (Peter is) very loyal, he's very protective.

“He's been a very good sounding board to his cousin over the years. So it absolutely makes sense that I think had both Wales brothers been there, it would have put a completely different slant on the whole event. And that's not what you want on what should be the happiest day of your life.” Also read: Did Harry and Meghan deliberately post anniversary photos to overshadow King Charles' royal tour? “Peter was positioned between the two warring brothers. He was sort of put right in the middle of them as the older cousin and that must have been a really difficult moment for him. Of course, a lot of water has gone under the bridge since then. “If that had been the case, that would have become the absolute focal point for Peter and Harriet's special day, and there have been enough distractions, I think, from the good things about the royal family over the past year. Hopefully, they can just have this one day to come together and celebrate someone's happy news for a change.” Harry’s book reportedly widened the gap between him and Peter. The book shared private details about the royal family. Nash feels that Harry’s decision not to attend the wedding is wise, considering his presence can lead to tension in the family and take away the spotlight from the newlyweds. She explained that the wedding should remain focused on Peter and Harriet rather than past family issues. Not just Harry, Nash says even Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew are expected to skip the wedding. According to her, the past year has been very hard for both of them because of personal problems that have also affected how they are viewed within the royal family.
