Late Night host Stephen Colbert has strongly condemned the shooting of Charlie Kirk on Wednesday night’s episode of The Late Show. Colbert is a well-known Trump critic, while Kirk was known to be a Trump sympathizer.
In his show, Colbert addressed the tragic killing of Kirk and said, "Our condolences go out to his family and all of his loved ones. I am old enough to personally remember the political violence of the 1960s, and I hope it is obvious to everyone in America that political violence does not solve any of our political differences. Political violence only leads to more political violence. And I pray with all my heart that this is the aberrant action of a madman and not a sign of things to come.”
What happened to Charlie Kirk?
Charlie Kirk, the CEO and co-founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was shot dead on Wednesday at an event in a Utah college. Kirk was speaking at a debate hosted by Turning Point USA at Utah Valley University when a shooter fired from a roof of a nearby building. Videos shared on social media show Kirk speaking into a handheld mic while sitting under a white tent. Moments later, a shot was fire,d and Kirk could be seen reaching up with his right hand as blood gushed from the left side of the neck.
The shooter targeted one person, said Beau Mason, the commissioner of the state Department of Public Safety. The Utah Governor called the killing a “political assassination.”
A “person of interest” was in custody Wednesday evening, Cox said, though no charges were immediately announced.
Kirk was known to be an ally of President Trump. He was also a top podcaster and a culture warrior. His assassination is the latest in the growing list of political violence in the US.

Earlier this year in July, CBS announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will end in May 2026. Colbert has been known to be a Trump critic for a long time. The channel cited the cancellation as a ‘financial decision,’ but speculations were rife that the reasons could have been different. Trump himself celebrated the show’s cancellation on Truth Social.
