Sector 36 is not an easy watch. It takes a certain amount of courage to sit through the troubling tale of the horrors of what happened in a posh locality in urban India as an innocent-looking man went about killing, raping and consuming children in a nearby slum area. Vikrant Massey as the man in question looks terrific and has earned rave reviews for his portrayal of the troubled character who went on continuing to commit these horrors with no consequences for a long time before the authorities caught on.

Maddock Films and Jio Studios’ Sector 36 debuted on Netflix on September 13. The film has since then been the talk of the town with Vikrant playing the criminal who is chased by actor Deepak Dobriyal’s character. Playing characters on opposite sides of the morality scale, Massey plays a chilling psychopath to the hilt, while Dobriyal shines as a relentless police officer.

There has been immense praise for director Aditya Nimbalkar who has earned high recognition for his vision. He recently mentioned one particular scene that he thinks is one of the film’s standout moments – the intense interrogation between Prem Singh (Massey) and Ram Charan Pandey (Dobriyal).

Spoilers ahead - Set in a dimly lit room, the scene features Inspector Ram Charan Pandey (Deepak) interrogating Prem Singh (Vikrant).

Sector 36' director's favourite scene

Talking about the interrogation scene, director Aditya Nimbalkar said, “That scene was the one I was both excited and nervous to film. Bodhayan deserves credit for writing such a complex sequence, and Saurabh Goswami, our cinematographer, and I planned every detail meticulously. While we allowed for some improvisation, every nuance, reaction, and movement was mapped out to ensure a seamless flow. Vikrant carried much of the heavy lifting, delivering an exceptional performance, while Deepak sir, with fewer dialogues, showed how powerful expressions can be. Baharul Islam’s presence also added depth to the scene.”

He added, “Sreekar Prasad, our editor, paced the drama perfectly, maintaining tension and letting key moments breathe. Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray's production design created a gritty, realistic atmosphere, while Ketan Sodha’s score and Mandar Kulkarni’s sound design elevated the emotional intensity, making the scene even more impactful. All these elements came together to create something far beyondwhat we had envisioned.”

Happy with the response to the film, said, “I’m truly overwhelmed by the incredible reactions the film is receiving, especially for the interrogation scene, which is easily my favourite. There was something raw and unfiltered about that moment—Deepak sir and I were so deeply immersed in our characters that everything else faded away. It felt as though the room was stripped of its reality. It was just the three of us—Deepak sir, Baharul sir, and me—completely absorbed in the intensity of the scene. That level of immersion is rare, and I think that’s why the scene resonated so strongly with the audience. The energy in that room was palpable, and I’m grateful we were able to capture it on screen.”
