Tamil cinema is facing a major issue after TFPC and the Tamil Nadu Active Producers Association announced that no new Tamil films would be released or filmed from September. This comes after a dispute with the Distributors Federation and Theatre Owners.
Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) and Tamil Nadu Active Producers Association have announced that no new Tamil films will be released in theatres from September 1, leading to a major disruption for the industry. As per the bodies, film shootings and post-production work will also be halted as part of the protest.
The move comes after a dispute over a new condition introduced by the Tamil Nadu Film Distributors Federation and the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association regarding the gap between a film's theatrical release and its OTT debut.
As per the producers, the associations want exhibitors to screen only those new films whose makers provide a written assurance of an eight-week theatrical window before an OTT release.
The announcement was made following a meeting held by the two producers' bodies on Saturday at the TFPC premises.
The joint statement read, "The distributors federation and the theatre owners association, of their own accord and without holding consultations with others, have decided that they can permit the theatrical screenings of only those films, whose producers give letters stating that they will release their films on OTT platforms only after eight weeks after their films' theatrical release."
The producers argued that such a rule was not being followed in neighbouring states, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala.
The producers further said, "When such decisions are made, consultations should have been held with all stakeholders to ensure that no party is affected. Only then should such announcements be made. Therefore, this unilateral decision of the distributors federation and the theatre owners association is unacceptable to producers."
The TFPC also highlighted the financial pressures faced by producers.
The bodies have urged the Tamil Nadu government to step in and facilitate an amicable resolution, as the issue could affect the livelihoods of thousands of people working in the Tamil film industry.
