The Songwriters Hall of Fame class of 2019 was inducted in New York on Thursday (July 13).

This year's inductees were Dallas Austin, Missy Elliott, John Prine, Jack Tempchin, Tom T. Hall and Yusuf Islam/Cat Stevens.

Pop stars Justin Timberlake and Halsey were also honoured. Timberlake was honoured with the Contemporary Icon Award.

Halsey received the Hal David Starlight Award which recognizes young talent. Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Alicia Keys are past recipients of the award.

"Songwriting is such a crazy science because you're taking a very limited amount of combinations of things - of notes, of words, of delivery and you're trying to find ways to make them exciting and new and fresh. And when you see one of your peers do it in a fantastic way it really makes your heart swell because you're excited for them. So I guess to have people feel that way about me in return is really, really very validating," said Halsey on the red carpet before the ceremony.

Carole Bayer Sager received the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award which is the highest honour at the ceremony. Bayer Sager, Dolly Parton and Carole King are the only unaccompanied female singer-songwriters to have received the award.

"I think the mark of a great song is that it lasts," said Bayer Sager. "I like to think the best songs don't come from us, they come through us."
