New Delhi
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced its list of new additions. The new members include artists like Jessica Alba, Lily Gladstone, Greta Lee, Catherine O’Hara, and S.S. Rajamouli. These are among the 487 artists and executives invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
With these new members, AMPAS membership will rise to 10,910 from 10,817 last year, with 9,934 members eligible to vote in the upcoming 97th Oscars in 2025.
Better gender representation in this year's Academy members
Notably, this year’s invitees include 44% women, a 4% increase from 2023, and 41% from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities, marking a significant 7% rise.
The actors, casting directors, costume designers, documentary, executives, makeup artists and hairstylists branches have invited more women than men.
Interestingly, the actors, directors, documentary, and writers mainly comprised artists from underrepresented communities.
The new additions in the directors branch include filmmakers from both international and domestic spheres – like Lila Avilés, Jayro Bustamante, JD Dillard, Alice Diop, Boots Riley, A.V. Rockwell, Emma Seligman and Angel Manuel Soto.
The new members also include 19 Oscar winners, including Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Holly Waddington, and 71 nominees such as Samy Burch and Danielle Brooks.
Notable industry professionals and veterans are also on the invite list, which includes Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, chief negotiator for the main SAG-AFTRA contract; Tim League, founder of Alamo Drafthouse; Iris Knobloch, President of Cannes; Dan Friedkin, co-founder of 30West; and Peter Safran, co-head of DC Studios. The Marketing and Public Relations Branch is well represented with long-standing industry figures such as Netflix’s David Ninh, Focus Features’ Elaine Patterson, Universal’s Julien Noble and National Research Group’s Ray Subers.
