The impending manslaughter trial against actor Alec Baldwin has finally begun as the jury was picked to hear the trial which involved the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Alec and Haylna were working on a film together called Rust where the said incident took place.
The film set was in New Mexico where Halyna Hutchins was employed as one of the cinematographers. Alec Baldwin who was involved with Rust as an actor and producer faces an involuntary manslaughter charge. The actor denies the charges and his involvement in the tragic death of Halyna in October 2021.
It so happened that Halyna was killed after a gun Alec Baldwin was using in a scene rehearsal went off and the bullet fatally shot the cinematographer. It led to her immediate death. The bullet also wounded director Joel Souza.
Meanwhile, the 12 jurors and four alternates who will decide the case were selected after prosecutors and Alec Baldwin's attorneys questioned them about everything from their political affiliation to their knowledge of the case.
Ahead of the trial, Alec and the team have got themselves a small victory as his involvement in the film in the dual role of producer and actor will not be considered by the court. The New Mexico judge overseeing the case has ruled against including Baldwin's role as a co-producer in the trial, despite arguments from prosecutors.
The prosecution had previously argued that Baldwin's producer role made him aware of safety concerns on set, implying his responsibility in the tragedy. However, Judge Sommer's ruling aims to prevent confusion and unfair prejudice against Baldwin in front of the jury.
The defence team, led by attorneys from Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, has repeatedly sought to keep certain evidence out of the trial, focusing also on procedural issues related to the discovery process. While Judge Sommer expressed scepticism about dismissing the case at this stage, she urged both sides to resolve outstanding document disputes promptly.
Apart from the criminal trial, Alec Baldwin faces civil lawsuits in California and New Mexico with regard to the Rust shooting incident.
