As the Disney-Fox merger nears its completion, it's unclear whether the X-Men franchise will continue as is or whether it will be recast and reimagined when the X-Men are under Disney's control.

The trailer for new X-Men movie 'Dark Phoenix' seemingly begins with the death of a character, but could the film also be the death knell of Twentieth Century Fox's hold over Marvel's mutants?

As the Disney-Fox merger nears its completion, it's unclear whether the X-Men franchise will continue as is or whether it will be recast and reimagined when the X-Men are under Disney's control.

The film, alongside the other Twentieth Century Fox X-Men film 'The New Mutants', has been delayed a number of times from its original date of November 2018, before being pushed back again to February and then June 2019.

The story of 'Dark Phoenix', which is seen as a classic in X-Men lore, has already been told on screen in the derided 'X-Men: The Last Stand'. However, after rebooting the franchise and then reintegrating it with the old franchise, producers are giving the story a second chance.

It follows original X-Man Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) as she struggles to deal with a primal force called The Phoenix which dwells within her. As the force further possesses Grey, she becomes the impossibly powerful Dark Phoenix, which her fellow X-Men, who include Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Alexandra Schipp (Storm) and Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), have to contend with.

The original comic book story as well as the 'X-Men: The Last Stand' both end in tragedy. But maybe this time, The X-Men will leave Fox with a happy ending.
