Robert Downey Jr is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom. However, did you know that Downey was set to reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in Deadpool & Wolverine?

Since its release, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's movie has been dominating the headlines, first for its cameos and then for the staggering box office numbers.

When Robert Downey Jr was set to Play Tony Stark in Deadpool & Wolverine?

Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who have written all three Deadpoolfilms, have recently shared how Downey was very close to making an appearance in the R-rated movie.

During their interview with IndieWire, the writers shared that Downey, 59, was about to make an appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine's opening scene alongside Jon Favreau's character Happy Hogan.

"We had wanted him to do a cameo. We had written that scene [to start] with Happy and Downey," Wernick said

Adding to this, Reese said, “Ryan Reynolds wrote the scene with both of them, so in the hopes we could get Downey.”

She added, “But he also wanted Favreau, because they’re a great combo, and they were all in the scene together.”

While the Deadpool team was trying hard to convince Downey Jr. back then, Marvel and the Iron Man actor were seemingly working on his return as Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And, unfortunately, it was the reason why he turned down his cameo appearance.

Talking about the same, Wernick said, ''Behind the scenes, we didn’t know about Doctor Doom. And there’s no way he was going to do both. And then we said, “Oh, Downey doesn’t say ‘no’ to Ryan Reynolds, does he? No one says no to Ryan Reynolds.” And Ryan gave him the hard press. We wrote scenes, and Downey read the scenes, but what we didn’t know behind the scenes was this Doctor Doom thing.''

Explaining Downey's cameo at the start of the movie, when Reynolds' Wade Wilson has been interviewed by the Avengers.

Talking about the same, Reese said, ''It was a version of what you saw in the sense that he rejected Wade. He just said he wasn’t a team player or whatever and questioned his team-player abilities. So it was actually pretty close to the scene that you saw. It just had two guys instead of one. And then Jon [Favreau] was, graciously, connected to it from the start. It worked out great. I mean, look, we would’ve loved to have Downey. But, at the same time, I think Marvel had this ace in their hole, which is he’s about to come back in this different character. So, to have him be Tony Stark? Knowing that Doctor Doom was coming on the heels of that? It just didn’t make sense.''

Robert is set to return to the Marvel world as an anti-hero Doctor Doom.
