The former Indian Spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, surprised the cricket world by announcing his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday (August 27). The veteran spinner had rejoined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during the IPL 2025 mega-auction and was expected to continue for a few more years. However, he decided to step away from the league and will now focus on playing in overseas tournaments. In a post on X, Ashwin wrote, “Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.”

In the mega IPL auction, last year, Chennai Super Kings showed strong interest in bringing Ashwin back to the team and eventually bought him for ₹9.75 crore, outbidding Lucknow Super Giants and Rajasthan Royals. Interestingly, Ashwin’s deal was nearly ₹6 crore (5.75 crore) higher than what CSK paid to retain ex-captain MS Dhoni (₹4 crore). It means he earned ₹5.75 crore more than CSK’s stand-in skipper. Despite the big signing in the mega auction, Ashwin’s 2025 season didn’t go as well as planned. He managed only 7 wickets in 9 matches at a bowling economy of 9.13. Overall in IPL, Ashwin has 187 wickets in 221 games at a bowling economy of 7.20. Also Read - 5 records of Ravichandran Ashwin which no other Indian has achieved Ashwin’s association with CSK in 2009 and his consistent performances in the IPL helped him earn a call-up to the India team, and he was also part of CSK’s title-winning squads in 2010 and 2011. When CSK returned to the IPL in 2018 after suspension, they tried to bring Ashwin back but failed to secure him. Apart from CSK, Ashwin also played for other teams — Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and later Rajasthan Royals before finally returning to CSK. He also played under Dhoni’s leadership at Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016.

Veteran cricketer and Chennai Super Kings star Ravichandran Ashwin has officially called time on his Indian Premier League (IPL) career on Wednesday (Aug 27). The former IPL champion took to his social media handle to announce the decision to quit the IPL. Calling it a new beginning, Ashwin will go down as one of the greatest players to have played in the IPL while representing five different franchises.

Ashwin retires from IPL
“Special day and hence a special beginning. Indian football has been in a mess for the last few days as the Indian Super League’s (ISL) future remains in limbo despite the new season kicking off in the majority of European and Asian countries. The top flight of Indian football is now facing an existential crisis, while the apex body, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) could face a FIFA ban. So, what is going wrong in Indian football and will there be better days?
Indian football in crisis
After the latest round of meetings between ISL clubs, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and AIFF, there was no conclusion on when the season will start. Currently, the FSDL (responsible for organising ISL) and AIFF are yet to reach an agreement over the financial terms and contract expansion to start the new club season. The FSDL’s contract with AIFF for ISL came to an end last season with no new contract agreed between the parties. Indian football in crisis After the latest round of meetings between ISL clubs, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and AIFF, there was no conclusion on when the season will start. Currently, the FSDL (responsible for organising ISL) and AIFF are yet to reach an agreement over the financial terms and contract expansion to start the new club season. The FSDL’s contract with AIFF for ISL came to an end last season with no new contract agreed between the parties. What is the future of Indian football? AIFF a step away from FIFA suspension, ISL season in limbo

India batter Cheteshwar Pujara, who recently announced his retirement from all formats, was one of the most difficult batters to be dismissed in world cricket. During his playing years 2010-2023, he troubled bowlers with his impregnable defence by dipping into his sea of concentration and patience. He was part of many memorable victories and saved numerous matches for India by absorbing not only pressure but playing infinite balls. His methods were equally effective in India and outside but he was at his absolute best in Australia - where he was the most difficult batter to be dismissed since the 1990s.
Was Pujara better than Rahul Dravid at number 3 for India?
When Pujara broke into the Indian side in 2010, the T20 cricket was starting to peak and the attacking brand of cricket was taking over every batter. Rohit Sharma called time on his Test career earlier this year, a week before his teammate and batting giant Virat Kohli also did the same. The former Test skipper featured in 68 matches, scoring 4301 runs at a batting average just above 40 (40.58). Having already retired from the shortest format last year following India's second T20 World Cup triumph (in the Americas), Rohit now plays just one format (ODIs). ‘Never say never’ is the most common term used for all sports athletes. Often heard more inside a WWE ring during promos, it applies across all sports, and cricket is one of them. AB de Villiers, the former South African and RCB superstar, has hinted at his return to the cash-rich league. Last seen during RCB’s IPL 2025 winning moments in Ahmedabad, de Villiers claims to be re-linking with his former IPL franchise in some capacity in future. A batting giant and a modern-day great, de Villiers never won a trophy with RCB, but aims to reconnect with them in future, helping them grow on the winning momentum. Cheteshwar Pujara bids adieu to international cricket, rather all forms of it, on Sunday (Aug 24) and this game and its countless fans shall be indebted to him for his contribution to it. He was one of a kind, perhaps the last of his kind, and Team India was blessed to have him as its batting mainstay, mainly in Tests, for 14 years. Cricket, like life, has always had someone to replace someone – like it did in Sachin Tendulkar’s case, it brought in Virat Kohli, and this modern-day great did do justice to it. However, finding Pujara’s replacement, let alone for Indian cricket, could take a long time, perhaps never! Pujara was a proper Test cricketer, something that, with the passing time, has now become a rarity in international cricket. But no one is to be blamed. It’s the game’s evolution that led to the demise of a certain breed while unearthing another. Although it’s hard to find proper Test match batters nowadays, precisely the number threes in the game, something that quietly vanished from cricket’s face, to be able to get another one like him would be this game's win, big time. Also read | Sachin Tendulkar lauds Cheteshwar Pujara on ‘wonderful career’; credits him for India’s 2018 Down Under success Pujara was never in a hurry, never. Ask Australia’s Josh Hazlewood, who thanked God for Pujara’s absence during India’s last tour Down Under.
Stubborn, solid and sassy
Pujara was old school in a lot of ways; used to bat like a Test cricketer, walk like one, speak like one, all in all, was like one. There were no ifs and buts about it, and each captain was as happy to have him in the line-up as anyone. Although some did complain about him being slow, probably killing the momentum, or not being able to play as per the situation, everyone forgot, in that moment, that he was always like this – stubborn, solid and sassy at the crease. Test cricket enthusiasts loved him, so did the writers, the journalists, the age-old broadcasters, and above all, this game. Sometimes even the bowlers, the fielders, the umpires, the fans - everyone! He could bat for hours and hours together, or days, or even on all days of a Test, as record books suggest, but then so could everyone; however, not everyone could take blows as he did. On his last tour Down Under, in the fourth Test at the Gabba, which India famously won and broke Australia’s long-standing streak, Pujara took blows as if he was supposed to. His bruised body was a testament to his will and determination to do it for his team, and not surprisingly, he did, helping his team win the match and clinch a historic series win.
Dream over money
Pujara never complained. Sure, he must have had desires to fill his pockets with T20 cricket money, like everyone did and still does to date, but he knew his game, his strengths and backed them, and he succeeded. He was sweet yet dangerous and like none the game has seen. Thank you, Pujara, cricket loves you, cricketers love you, and so do we!

Pujara was like Dravid after Dravid; not the second best after anyone, but the absolute best India has had!

Indian cricket and the rumour mill seem to walk in parallel, with something new coming out of it every day. The latest, however, is that Shreyas Iyer would succeed Rohit Sharma as Team India’s new ODI captain. Even though he is not part of the forthcoming 2025 Asia Cup in the UAE, the rumours state that he leads the race, ahead of Shubman Gill, for India’s One-Day captaincy role. Former cricketer-turned-broadcaster Aakash Chopra addressed the rumour mill, ending this debate with an assertive answer. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said the rumour market has been hot since, shrugging off the latest speculation of Iyer being the frontline choice. "Good question, because the rumour markets are hot. It was said that Shreyas Iyer would become the captain, that he would pip Shubman Gill to the post. Sir, from where do you get it? In my opinion, the next captain has been decided without an appointment. It has been decided that it would be Shubman Gill," Chopra said on his YouTube channel. Also read | Sachin Tendulkar lauds Cheteshwar Pujara on ‘wonderful career’; credits him for India’s 2018 Down Under success Gill, however, is shortlisted as the next all-format captain, per the latest reports. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee recently reinstated him into the T20I team for the Asia Cup, also appointing him the new vice-captain. His promotion has come on the back of him becoming the new Test captain. In his maiden Test series as the new skipper, Gill led India to level the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy (2-2). Even with the bat in hand, Gill scored 754 runs across five matches, including registering his highest Test score of 269.
Ponting throws weight behind Gill
Not only Chopra but also his former KKR teammate and Australia captain Ricky Ponting backed Gill to assume the ODI captaincy once Rohit decides to hang up his boots. Ponting noted that the BCCI is grooming Gill as Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav’s successor in white-ball formats. "He is the Test captain. He has been made T20I vice-captain, maybe not out of turn as they had a logic, but Axar Patel hadn't done anything wrong, and no one felt that the spot would automatically go to him, and you could have argued against it as well. If he has been made the T20I vice-captain, he is already the ODI vice-captain. So don't ask the question. Shubman Gill is going to be the next captain," Ponting said, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

The BCCI men's selection committee overlooked Shreyas Iyer in the 15-man Asia Cup squad picked last week.

Ponting throws weight behind Gill Not only Chopra but also his former KKR teammate and Australia captain Ricky Ponting backed Gill to assume the ODI captaincy once Rohit decides to hang up his boots.

On a day marred by hundreds and records, a lesser-known spinning all-rounder etched his name in the history books. Cooper Connolly, an orthodox left-armer, broke late Shane Warne's long-standing bowling record to crush South Africa, handing them their biggest ODI defeat (regarding runs). On Sunday (Aug 24) in Mackay, in the third and final One-Dayer, Australia hammered their second-highest ODI total (431 for two); however, unlike the last time when they crossed 430 (against Proteas during the 2006 ODI) and lost the match, they emerged victorious by 276 runs.
Batting madness earlier in the day
Australian captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and elected to bat first. He, alongside Travis Head, took the attack to the opposition from the word go, adding 250 for the first wicket. While both completed their respective hundreds, hitting 142 (Head) and 100 (Marsh), respectively, the madness began after Cameron Green came out to the middle. Alongside Alex Carey, who also hit a quick-fire fifty (50* off 37 balls), Green went berserk, whacking bowlers to all parts of the ground. A man in form, Green completed the second-quickest ODI hundred for Australia in just 47 balls, hitting an unbeaten 118 off just 55 balls. He smoked eight massive sixes and six boundaries to see his team register its second-highest ODI total (431 for two). Meanwhile, a 276-run win over the Proteas is Australia’s second-biggest win (regarding runs) in One-Day Cricket.

Defending a massive 432, the Aussies came well prepared; Cooper Connolly ran through their top, middle and lower order to hand the hosts a consolation win in this series.

The right-handed batter holds plenty of batting records, having scored over 7000 runs in 103 Tests, averaging 43.60. Although he cemented his place at the top following Dravid’s departure, Pujara played alongside legendary cricketers, including Sachin Tendulkar, who took to his social media handle to pay tribute to him on his ‘wonderful career.’ “Pujara, it was always reassuring to see you walk out at No.3. You brought calm, courage, and a deep love for Test cricket every time you played. Your solid technique, patience, and composure under pressure have been a pillar for the team. Pujara was one of India’s best Test batters on his second tour Down Under (in 2018). In four Tests, in which India stood tall, winning their maiden Test series in Australia for the first time, Pujara was the top run-getter, scoring 521 runs in seven innings, averaging 74.43, with 193 at the SCG being the highest score by anyone across both camps. He didn’t stop there. Two years later, on India’s next tour Down Under, another four-match affair, Pujara played a handy role in helping India stay ahead of the hosts and scripted history by repeating the past heroics. Without their captain and star batter Virat Kohli, who left the series after the first Test, which India lost, Ajinkya Rahane and Pujara led the visitors to make a comeback of the ages (in the series), winning it 2-1. He, however, stood fourth on the list of batters with most runs scored (271 in four matches). Earlier on Sunday, Pujara took to social media to announce his retirement. "Wearing the Indian jersey, singing the anthem, and trying my best each time I stepped on the field - it's impossible to put into words what it truly meant," Pujara wrote. Australia batters scripted history on Sunday (Aug 24) as the nation achieved a rare feat in the final ODI match against South Africa in Mackay. Batting first, the trio of Travis Head (142), Mitchell Marsh (100) and Cameron Green (118*) scored superb hundred as they put on 431/2 in 50 overs.
