Former Pakistan white-ball captain and gloveman Mohammad Rizwan has agreed to join Caribbean Premier League (CPL) side St Kitts and Nevis Patriots for the remainder of the season, signing as a replacement for Afghanistan seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi, who will link up with the national team for the triangular T20I series involving Pakistan and the host UAE. After Asia Cup snub, ex-Pakistan captain joins CPL side as Fazalhaq Farooqi's replacement

Just days after the BCCI men’s selection committee overlooked Shreyas Iyer for the 15-man Asia Cup squad, the latest reports seemed to be doing some compensation for it. Iyer, who led two different IPL teams to finals in back-to-back seasons, even winning a title with one (KKR in 2024), is now leading the race to replace Rohit Sharma as Team India’s new ODI captain. Following a snub from the eight-team tournament starting September 29 in the UAE, and to be played in the T20 format, Iyer is said to be ahead of Shubman Gill, whom Ajit Agarkar, BCCI’s chief selector, hinted at assuming captaincy across all formats earlier. The BCCI is looking at the bigger picture and preparing candidates for the future ODI captaincy role. India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025 was announced on Tuesday (Aug 19) as the Men in Blue prepare to defend their title under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav. The Indian team, which had a couple of surprises, will now take to the field as they try to build a squad for the T20 World Cup which takes place in their own backyard in less than six months' time. So here is a detailed look at who could be in India’s Playing XI for the Asia Cup 2025 which starts on September 9 while the World Cup remains a long-term objective.
Gill, Abhishek to open?
It is highly likely that the Punjab duo of Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill will lead the Indian team’s Playing XI as they both bring tons of experience at the top. There are multiple reasons why the management could prefer the Gill-Abhishek pairing over Samson-Abhishek is as the former have a good chemistry, playing together for Punjab as well as for India U-19 in the past. This would mean Sanju Samson will have to drop to number three as the wicketkeeper-batting option in the side. The Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025 was announced on Tuesday (Aug 19) as Shubman Gill was included, while Shreyas Iyer was ignored. The tournament serves as the launch pad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. So, ahead of the tournament, here are all the details of the Asia Cup 2025.

Asia Cup 2025: All you need to know - full squads, complete fixtures, date, time, venue and other key details

The wait is over; the BCCI selectors and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav have picked a power-packed 15-man India squad for the 2025 Asia Cup, starting on September 9 in the UAE. Newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill returns to the side, while the selectors overlooked Shreyas Iyer for the eight-team tournament. On the other hand, ace quick Jasprit Bumrah also headlines the pace attack, with the selectors picking as many as three spinners.
Here is the full squad -
Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh Amid all reports of the selectors contemplating picking either Gill or Shreyas Iyer for the continental tournament, they made up their choice, picking Gill and naming him as the vice-captain. The selectors have backed the core, including openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, with Tilak Varma also being retained. While the plus remains that most of those who featured in the past two T20I series, including Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh and Axar Patel, have also been retained, bringing back Jitesh Sharma as a spare keeper comes as a boost for the Indian Team. Shivam Dube’s inclusion also improves the all-rounders’ column. India’s fast bowling department includes three seamers - Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, with Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy being the two frontline spinners. Meanwhile, the selectors, however, took some harsh calls by dropping some of the top names and aspiring contenders for the Asia Cup, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Washington Sundar, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, among others. Jaiswal, Sundar, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag and Prasidh Krishna are part of the standby players.
No Iyer for Asia Cup
The biggest miss of the lot was Shreyas Iyer. The Indian team’s white-ball mainstay was largely touted to be picked for the 2025 Asia Cup, but the selectors, the head coach and SKY decided against bringing him back. His exclusion comes as a shock to the fans, as Iyer’s credentials were too strong to avoid him. In the past two IPL seasons, Iyer led two different sides to the final, winning the title with one (KKR in 2024). His calm demeanour and leadership skills could have come in handy for the Indian Team, besides his experience of playing in these conditions, having earlier helped the Indian Team clinch the Champions Trophy in the UAE early this year. Meanwhile, India is placed in Group A alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, Oman, and the tournament host (the UAE). Group B consists of the remaining four teams, including Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Hong Kong. The marquee India vs Pakistan Group game is scheduled for Sunday (Sep 14), with both expected to meet again later in the tournament.

No Iyer for Asia Cup The biggest miss of the lot was Shreyas Iyer.

The Indian squad for the 2025 Asia Cup will be announced on Tuesday (Aug 19) when the BCCI men’s selection committee meets in Mumbai. Ajit Agarkar-led panel already has plenty to look into and cater to, with countless options to choose from for each position. While they are contemplating selections of some of the top names, including Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer and even Mohammed Siraj, they have received a last-minute push to take a bold call and include uncapped teenager Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the squad for the continental tournament. Former India opener and chief selector Kris Srikkanth is the one to speak up for him. The selectors are said to have pinned their hopes on the side’s core that featured against England and South Africa earlier, with Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma among those expected to stay. All the talks around Team India‘s Asia Cup 2025 squad continue to take new turns every day, with the latest report suggesting that the men’s selection committee has finalised at least 14 players, with four players fighting for that one '15th' spot. Former Pakistan captain and star batter Babar Azam found no place in the side’s 17-man squad for the 2025 Asia Cup, announced on Sunday (Aug 17). The PCB dropped Babar and keeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan from the T20 squad for the continental tournament starting September 9 in the UAE. Shreyas Iyer could be on his way to the UAE for the second time in six months as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to announce the squad for the Asia Cup 2025. Expected to be announced on Tuesday (Aug 19), the selectors' panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, could bring a string of surprises to the squad, including the exclusions of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. So here is a predicted 15-man squad that could travel to the UAE ahead of the Asia Cup 2025.
Samson, Iyer in
Turning to the openers, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are set to retain their place in the side, with both enjoying stellar run. Samson scored two centuries at the back end of 2024 in South Africa, while his ability to keep wickets comes as a welcome addition. With Shubman Gill unlikely to travel after Sunday’s media reports, either Ishan Kishan or Sai Sudharsan could be in frame as back-up opener. The middle order looks more than sorted with captain Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya and Rinku Singh to feature in the Playing XI. In this case, Shreyas Iyer will be more than a good back-up, having shown his class in the IPL. On the other hand, Jitesh Sharma should be the obvious choice as back-up wicketkeeper for Samson, even if Ishan Kishan is considered to make the 15-man squad. Looking at the all-rounder spots, Washington Sundar should act as back-up to Hardik, who has struggled with injuries at times but has the ability to win a match single-handedly. Shivam Dube should be another option that could be discussed to board the plane with the Indian team for the Asia Cup. ALSO READ | From Rohit Sharma to Virat Kohli, 5 Indian batters with most runs in Asia Cup (ODIs + T20Is)
Bowling options
Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah are the obvious choices in the Playing XI and will feature in all matches if fit.
