Defending champions England are on the brink of a catastrophic exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup as they sit third in the Group B standings with only two matches remaining. Jos Buttler’s side, who are one of the favourites to win the T20 World Cup, could face elimination if they fail to win their remaining matches. But what are the scenarios that could see them reach the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup?
England on the brink
Currently, the English side has one point from two matches after their defeat to Australia and points were shared with Scotland due to a washout. Buttler and Co can reach a maximum of five points in Group B while both Scotland (maximum seven) and Australia (maximum eight) sit in pole position.
For England to qualify, they should win both matches while Australia should lose both their remaining matches, or Scotland should lose their remaining match with them taking a hit on the net run rate (NRR).
The best possible scenario for England to qualify for the Super 8 will be – Australia beat Scotland by a big margin which results in them taking a hit on their NRR. This, coupled with England winning by a big margin against Oman and Namibia, will see Buttler and Co in the next round.

How could England get knocked out in the group stage?
In case Australia beat Namibia on Tuesday (June 11), then the Aussies will qualify for the Super 8 and could play a weakened side against Scotland in their final group match.
A defeat for Australia against Scotland will see the latter reach the next stage at England’s expense. In this scenario, Australia will end with six points while Scotland will finish top with seven points, meaning even if England win their remaining matches, they will face elimination.
Also if Australia win against Namibia and one of England’s matches against Oman or Namibia gets washed out due to rain, then Buttler and Co will have to pack their bags early as they won’t be able to finish in the top two.
