Shahid Afridi slams PCB's 'surgery' post T20 WC, questions captain Babar Azam's backing

At the sidelines ofthe World Championship of Legends (WCL), in Edgbaston, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for sacking Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq post the national team's 2024 T20 World Cup debacle, in West Indies and the USA. Recently, the two -- who were part of the seven-member selection committee -- were ousted from the panel, which hasn't been well received by Afridi. Further, he also questioned the constant backing of captain Babar Azam despite failures.

'A captain never got so many chances'

Afridi told the reporters, "They should decide on the captain or the coach and then give them time. As far as Babar is concerned.. I have captained, Younis (Khan), and Misbah have captained a lot. A captain never got so many chances. As soon as the World Cup is over, often the captain used to be the first one who got the blame. Babar has led in two-three World Cups, two-three Asia Cups, T20 World Cups, he has had enough opportunities. If you bring in someone new, give him chances."

'I don't understand this surgery from PCB'

Further, he added, "I got to know that only Abdul Razzaq and Wahab Riaz have been sacked from the selection committee. I don't understand this surgery. If the selection committee is of 6-7 people then why only these two have been removed?"

PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi promised 'surgery' in response to the Men in Green'sshambolic run in the T20 WC, however, Afridi remains confused as to why only Riaz and Razzaq were targetted.

Talking about Babar, the white-ball captain -- who was reappointed early this year after resigning post the 2023 ODI WC -- has been under scrutiny for his leadership and ordinary run with the bat. In the 20-nation T20 WC, he made only 122 runs at a strike rate of 101.66 whereas his captaincy was below par. So far, he has led in four ICC events, 1 ODI WC and 3 T20 WCs, and two Asia Cup editions but has failed to take Pakistan to the title in any of them.
