Former Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez lashed out at Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for picking Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim for the T20 World Cup, currently being held in West Indies and the USA. Hafeez went on a no-holds-barred barrage against the PCB for selecting Amir and Imad, who recently overturned their retirement to play the T20 WC. Hafeez's remarks came following Babar Azam-led Pakistan's six-run loss at the hands of India on Sunday (June 9) in New York. Pakistan are at the brink of early elimination with two losses in a row.
Hafeez alleged that PCB made a 'deal' to select players like Amit and Wasim. He further opined that these two are mainly interestedin playing franchise leagues around the world and are taking part in the T20 WC due to no such competitions at present.
On a Pakistani show, Hafeez said, "They (PCB) brought them here out of greed, made deals with such players (Amir and Wasim) who have ruined Pakistan's cricket. I was in the domestic circuit, but no one wanted to play domestic cricket. It is because they were telling me that 'any of us gets selected, we will take it.' How can it be that players who don't even play Pakistan's domestic cricket got selected."
He added, "When asked to play for Pakistan six months ago, they said they wanted to play in leagues. Since no leagues are happening these days, they are playing in the World Cup. They are playing in the World Cup as if it is just another league."
Amir was economical in Pakistan's T20 WC opener versus USA, where he ended with 1 for 25 but went for plenty in the Super Over.
Against India, he had a good run with the ball, returning with 2 for 23 but Wasim struggled during Pakistan's 120-run chase versus the Men in Blue. The all-rounder only managed a 23-ball 15 as Babar Azam & Co. lost by six runs, managing 113 for 7 in 20 overs.
Both Wasim and Amir had retired long back. The former stepped aside following his ODI WC snub last year whereas the speedster had announced his retirement from international cricket in late 2020, citing mental torture.
