Indian Premier League (IPL) side Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) might see a new captain in the new season. The developments were reported by news agency IANS that wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul is all set to be replaced. The decision was taken at the recent meeting with CEO Sanjiv Goenka.
“The meeting was official with the CEO Sanjiv Goenka on Monday, the captaincy and retention topics were discussed. However, Rahul is unlikely to captain the side in the upcoming edition as he wants to explore himself more as a batter. Goenka has full confidence in Rahul and he will be retained as a player, but will not be seen captaining the side,” reported IANS citing sources close to the franchise.
“We are still exploring the captaincy option but with BCCI agreeing on player retention conditions we have two players (Krunal Pandya and Nicholas Poran) in race,” he added.
There were speculations of the same ever since Goenka and Rahul were seen in an animated discussion during one of the IPL matches last season.
Rahul has been the captain of the side ever since it made its debut in IPL 2021.
The India batter is, however, often criticised for his slow strike rate during the IPL and international games and was most recently not picked of the T20 World Cup 2024 which India went on to win.
Former Mumbai Indians captain and star batter Rohit Sharma could play for another franchise if MI decides against retaining him ahead of IPL 2025. With all teams involved eagerly awaiting BCCI’s decision on changes concerning auction rules, including the reintroduction of the Right to Match (RTM) card and clarity on number of retentions, one specific team – Punjab Kings, has expressed keenness in bagging Rohit’s service, provided they have the balance.
