MS Dhoni gives up captaincy duties ahead of IPL 2024
MS Dhoni's decision to hand over the captaincy duties to Ruturaj Gaikwad on the eve of Chennai Super King's IPL 2024 opener has come as a shock to fans and rivals alike. Dhoni led CSK since its inception in 2008 and finishesoff, arguably, as the greatest captain the tournament has ever seen.
Gaikwad, who opens the innings for CSK will be the second player after Ravindra Jadeja to have been handed the captain's armband by MS Dhoni. The all-rounder (Jadeja) was handed the responsibility in 2022 before giving it back to Dhoni, midway into the season.
Former CSK player Irfan Pathan compared Dhoni's leadership to that of a supernova and said it will be remembered for decades to come.

What did CSK announce?
"MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024," CSK said in an official statement.
"Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season," it added.
Dhoni guided CSK to a record-equalling fifth title last season despite suffering from a wobbly knee throughout the tournament. At the time, many wondered if it would be the last swansong for him but the former Indian captain said he would return the next year.
Having given up the captaincy, experts are of the view that the 2024 season could be the last time the 42-year-oldDhoni takes to the field to don the iconic canary-yellow jersey.
