Chennai Super Kings have appointed Ruturaj Gaikwad as the new captain, replacing talismanic skipper MS Dhoni who led the franchise since its inception in 2008. The former Indian captain will continue to be part of the squad, at least for this season.
MS Dhoni steps down as CSK captain
The announcement was made on the eve of CSK's opening match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The news has come as a shock to CSK and MS Dhoni supporters.
"MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024," CSK said in an official statement.
"Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season," it added.

Ruturaj Gaikwad named new captain of Chennai Super Kings
Dhoni hadbeen leading the CSK camp since 2008. Under him, Chennai had won as many as five titles, the latest coming in the 2023 edition. CSK hasentered the playoffs in every season barring 2020 and 2022.
Dhoni guided CSK to a record-equalling fifth title last season despite suffering from a wobbly knee throughout the tournament. At the time, many wondered if it would be the last swansong for him but the former Indian captain said he would return the next year.
Notably, this is not the first instance when Dhoni has handed the captaincy armband to another player. During the 2022 season, Dhoni briefly handed the captaincy duties to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja before returning to helm and guiding the team to victory.
Having given up the captaincy, experts are of the view that the 2024 season could be the last time 42-year-oldDhoni takes to the field to don the iconic canary-yellow jersey.
Dhoni's departure brings an end to an era of dominance which was engineered by him and head coach Stephen Fleming. The return to IPL in 2018 after a two-year ban and winning the trophy remains one of the biggest talking point in CSK's history under Dhoni.
