A new look Team India is all set to make its mark as Gautam Gambhir officially makes his coaching debut for the Men in Blue when they take on Sri Lanka at the end of the month. In an announcement made on Thursday (July 18), Suryakumar Yadav was officially declared as the new captain of the T20I side ahead of Hardik Pandya while Shubman Gill was named his deputy. Meanwhile, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will return to the side during the ODI series, which will be their first since the T20 World Cup final win against South Africa at the end of June.

After speculations were high regarding Suryakumar’s appointment as the new T20I captain, the news was confirmed on Thursday. It is reported that new head coach Gambhir personally requested for Suryakumar to be named as the new skipper ahead of veteran Hardik Pandya. The all-rounder was overlooked entirely andShubman Gill got the nod as the new vice-captain. Yadav has previously led the Indian side in the T20I format but now takes charge of the side on a permanent basis.

Rohit, Virat return

In the ODI side, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will make their comebacks as expected with the former being in charge as the skipper. The duo along with Ravindra Jadeja had announced their retirement from the T20I format after the T20 World Cup win in June, but both will now return to the ODI series, which will serve as the launching pad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Like T20Is, Gill hasalso been given charge as vice-captain of the ODI side having led the teamin the T20I series against Zimbabwe.
