IND vs NZ: Washington Sundar added to Indian squad for Pune, Mumbai Tests

Indian Cricket added all-rounder Washington Sundar to the side for the remaining two Test matches as the hosts, now trailing 0-1, look to stage a comeback into the three-match Test series. The news of Sundar’s addition was confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday (Oct 20) evening on its social media handle. India lost the Bengaluru Test earlier in the day by eight wickets and trail 0-1 in the series.

With India losing to New Zealand, BCCI’s announcement came as a surprise for the all-rounder, as he is currently in Delhi representing Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy group stage opener. The call-up comes after he was omitted from the Test squad despite playing in the Bangladesh T20I series earlier this month. The call-up also comes after Sundar scored a brilliant 152 in the Ranji Trophy contest against Delhi.

His innings propelled Tamil Nadu to a whopping 674/6 in their first inning, with Sai Sudharsan amassing 213. Pradosh Paul also contributed with 117 as Tamil Nadu ran riot with the bat. In reply, Delhi made a decent start but they closed Day 3 on 264/8 and are in danger of giving away valuable points based on first innings lead to Tamil Nadu. Yash Dhull was the only shining star, having scored unbeaten 103 for Delhi.

India lose Bengaluru Test

Needing 107 runs to win the Bengaluru Test on Day 5, New Zealand batters made an easy meal of the Indian bowlers as they won the Test match. For India Rishabh Pant scored 99 and gave a good helping hand to Sarfaraz Khan, who scored 150. These innings combined with Rohit’s 52 and Virat’s 71 helped India reach 462 as they overcame a massive deposit of 356 runs from the first innings.

However, the second innings heroics did not prove enough for India, having been bowled out for 46 in the first innings as they lost by eight wickets. The eyes will now be on the second Test match which starts on Thursday (Oct 24).
