Injured Kane Williamson is set to miss the third and final Test match against India in Mumbai as confirmed by New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on Tuesday (Oct 29). Williamson, likely to travel to India for the final Test will now stay in his homeland and prepare for the England series during the summer. New Zealand currently lead the three-match Test series 2-0 and still retain a narrow chance of entering their second World Test Championship (WTC) final.
"Kane continues to show good signs, but isn't quite ready to jump on a plane and join us," Gary Stead said in a release adding,"While things are looking promising, we think the best course of action is for him to stay in New Zealand and focus on the final part of his rehabilitation so he'll be good to go for England."
"The England series is still a month away so taking the cautious approach now will ensure he is ready for the first Test in Christchurch," he further said.
Williamson was initially ruled out of the Bengaluru Test match and waslater confirmed unavailable for the Pune Test too. While he is still not at match fitness the former Kiwi skipper was expected to be in Mumbai for the final Test. However, he will now stay in his homeland and prepare for the three-match Test series against England.
The BlackCaps have a golden opportunity to whitewash India in their own backyard as they search for a historic win. With the WTC final qualification still a possibility New Zealand will look to win the Mumbai Test in the absence of Williamson.
Tom Latham’s side still has four Test matches to play in the current cycle of the WTC, however, they will need to win each of those contests. In case New Zealand win their four Test matches, they will have one foot in the final of the WTC which will be played in June 2025 at Lord’s. The equation will also be influenced by the Australia-India Test series starting on November 22 in Perth.
