ICC Test Ranking: Virat Kohli drops out of top 20 for first time in almost decade after poor show in NZ series
India’s star batter Virat Kohli took a major hit on his International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings after a poor show in the New Zealand series. In the ICC men’s rankings announced on Wednesday (Nov 6), Virat got dropped out of the top 20 for the first time in almost a decade, having scored just 93 runs across six innings during the series. On the other hand, Rishabh Pant is now sixth in the standings with 750 rating points after having impressed with the bat.

In the latest rankings, Virat took a massive hit and now sits 22nd with 655 rating points, having been a major failure with the bat. The former India captain’s highest score was 70, which came in the second innings of the Bengaluru Test. Apart from that, the rest of the five innings yielded a meager 23 runs, while he averaged 15.5 runs per inning.
On the other hand, Pant scored 261 runs in the three-match Test series, averaging 43.5 runs per innings. Pant returned to the Test format after a massive 21-month gap due to a near-fatal car accident. Pant scored a hundred in his return Test match in September against Bangladesh in Chennai, which also played an important role in India’s series win.

Besides, India's young batter Yashasvi Jaiswal took a slight hit and now sits fourth in the ranking, scoring 190 runs in six innings and amassing 189 runs in the Bangladesh series. He remains the most consistent performer in the Indian side despite India’s massive failure against New Zealand.

The Indian batters will have the opportunity to bounce back in the Test rankings during the Australia Test series, which starts on November 22, with eyes on big players like Pant and Virat. India need to win the series 4-0 if they are to reach the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) in June 2025.
