BMW recalls Mini Cooper SE electric models over battery concerns
German automotive giant BMW has announced a global recall of its electric Mini Cooper SE models to address concerns related to their battery systems. The recall, which could potentially affect more than 140,000 vehicles worldwide, has been prompted by the risk of overheating in the batteries, raising concerns about the possibility of fires, even when the vehicles are parked.
In Germany alone, approximately 39,000 Mini Cooper SE vehicles are believed to be impacted by the recall. BMW has emphasised that there have been no reported accidents or injuries associated with the battery issues.
The company's statement outlined that problems within the battery system can lead to overheating, increasing the risk of a fire. To mitigate this risk, the software of the Mini Cooper SE contains a diagnostic function capable of detecting battery malfunctions and alerting the driver.
BMW has urged customers who have received the alert message to visit an authorised Mini dealership to have their vehicles inspected and any necessary repairs or software updates performed. The company is committed to ensuring the safety of its customers and is working diligently to address the battery issue.
The Mini Cooper SE, a popular electric vehicle in the market, is equipped with a 32.6 kWh battery pack that offers a WLTP-claimed range of 270 kilometres. The electric motor delivers an output of 184 horsepower and 270 Nm of torque. The vehicle's charging options include a 50 kW fast charger, allowing for a 0-80% charge in approximately 36 minutes.
In addition to its electric powertrain, the Mini Cooper SE boasts a range of features and amenities, including a 5.5-inch digital driver's display, an 8.8-inch infotainment system, Apple CarPlay compatibility, heated front seats, wireless phone charging, and a twin sunroof.
