In an exclusive interview with WION on Indian Air Force Day, retired IAF Wing Commander Priti Ojha reflects on a range of issues – from how India’s security environment and the nature of warfare has evolved since she joined the Indian Air Force in 2004 to what it means to be a women in uniform. Drawing on her experience as a Fighter Controller, she explains why modern air power has evolved into aerospace power and why the IAF must be prepared for simultaneous threats across multiple fronts. Ojha also speaks about the importance of information networks in modern warfare and why professionalism, rather than gender, should define an woman officer’s role in the IAF. Also Read: The new air threat on India's two fronts
Excerpts from her interview to WION:
You joined the IAF at a very different point in India's strategic history. When you look at the security environment India faces today, what strikes you as the biggest change and challenge? Wg Cdr Priti Ojha (Retd): I joined the IAF in 2004 and, after one year of rigorous training, was commissioned in 2005. The biggest change that has surfaced over the years is our own perception and response to terrorist activities. From an almost muted standpoint to the way we have responded to the Pulwama attack and the Pahalgam attack, our approach has grown tremendously over these years. We are now acknowledged as a country with the resolve to retaliate and stand against terrorism with full force. Also, alongside conventional military threats, we now have cyber warfare, drones, space-based capabilities, information warfare and the growing use of technology and artificial intelligence (AI). The battlespace has expanded far beyond the traditional air, land and sea domains. Having served as a Fighter Controller, I have always understood the value of having the right information at the right time—and today, that principle has become even more important. Thus, the biggest challenge is, of course, technological advancement, because it plays its role on both sides. With better technology contributing to the development of the defence sector comes its potential misuse in the hands of perpetrators. But I am positive that, with the foresight we have nowadays, we will surely have the upper hand. Is there a danger that conversations about “women in the military” sometimes focus so much on gender that we forget to judge officers simply by their professional ability? Wg Cdr Priti Ojha (Retd): I believe, being part of this prestigious organisation, I vouch that officers are gender neutral. We have as much experience, equal opportunities to lead and freedom to train and work as the other gender. This is the beauty of IAF. You perform well and it is recognised and commended irrespective of the gender you belong to. Mission, excellence and integrity is all achieved through the professionalism one possesses and these attributes are gender neutral. Either you have it or you don’t. Also Read: Skies of courage: India's air warriors turn ninety-four India today has to think about both its western and northern fronts, while also keeping an eye on the wider Indo-Pacific. How does that change the way we should think about air power? Wg Cdr Priti Ojha (Retd): We can no longer look at air power in the scenario of a single-front conflict. We have to be prepared for simultaneous challenges on multiple fronts, while also retaining the ability to respond to developments across the wider Indo-Pacific. And we are indeed developing our capabilities and training accordingly. We have to become even more flexible, networked, responsive and geographically agile. The ability to rapidly shift focus and maintain situational awareness. Having served as a Fighter Controller, I would also emphasise that modern today’s aerospace power doesn’t operate in isolation. It has integrated with space, cyber, maritime and land-based capabilities, with a common operational picture and seamless command-and-control. What worries you more from a military perspective: losing an aircraft or losing the information network that tells the aircraft where and when to operate? Wg Cdr Priti Ojha (Retd): It is like comparing apples with oranges. Both have their significance in strengthening the force. You can’t choose between these two. Places where the network system is the back bone of the organisation, the aircraft is responsible for the final execution of the mission. Losing an aircraft is an immediate and tangible loss—of a highly trained crew, an expensive combat asset and, potentially, a critical operational capability. But losing the information network can have an equally profound impact because modern air operations depend on accurate, timely and secure information for situational awareness, decision-making and coordination. I have seen firsthand that an aircraft is only as effective as the information and command-and-control environment supporting it. At the same time, the best information network has little value if the combat platforms and trained people are not there to act upon it. Hence, these are all interrelated, and none of this can be achieved without prioritising combat effectiveness.

The Trump administration has suspended Microsoft from a US programme that allows companies to seek green cards for foreign workers employed in the country on H-1B visas. Vice President JD Vance and US Labour Department officials announced the action on Thursday, accusing Microsoft and other major technology and outsourcing companies of abusing the H-1B visa system at the expense of American workers. The administration said the suspension followed an ongoing investigation into the company's use of the visa system. Vance said the government had decided to suspend Microsoft's participation in the PERM programme, which is a key step for employers seeking permanent residency for foreign workers. "Thanks to an ongoing investigation, we have decided to suspend the PERM program for Microsoft, which means they will no longer be able to take those H1-Bs and apply for permanent resident status within the United States of America," Vance said in a post on X.

"Thanks to an ongoing investigation, we have decided to suspend the PERM program for Microsoft, which means they will no longer be able to take those H-1Bs and apply for permanent resident status within the United States of America. Now our message to Microsoft and to any other foreign or domestic corporation is quite simple. We obviously want you to thrive in the United States of America. We want people to invest in the United States of America, particularly the American technology sector. We’re the biggest boosters of your industry. We want you to continue to grow and to employ a lot of people, but we want you to employ American workers. And so our message to Microsoft is, you’re great American company, but you’ve got to hire great American workers. You cannot lay off American workers and then replace them with foreign indentured servants."— Vice President JD Vance (@VP) October 8, 2026

The vice president also accused Microsoft of using foreign workers in a way that undercut US wages and displaced American employees. "There has been no company in the United States, unfortunately, that has abused the system more than Microsoft," Vance said at a White House news conference. He claimed Microsoft laid off 6,000 American workers last year while benefiting from 6,300 H-1B visas and nearly 3,000 green cards. "For every worker that Microsoft laid off, they replaced that worker with 1½ foreign indentured servants," Vance said. Microsoft had not immediately responded to requests for comment.
Other IT companies also targeted
US Labour Secretary Keith Sonderling said Microsoft was not the only company facing action. The administration also announced the suspension of several other companies from the programme, including Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, Wipro, HCL, Capgemini and Adobe. The move expands the administration's scrutiny of companies that rely heavily on foreign workers and comes as the Trump administration continues its wider push to tighten the H-1B visa system.
Universities also under investigation
The Labour Department also announced investigations into nine universities over allegations involving international students and US wages. The institutions include Harvard, Yale and Stanford. Labour Department Inspector General Anthony D'Esposito said subpoenas had already been served as part of the investigations. The administration has increasingly focused on alleged misuse of programmes involving foreign workers and international students, arguing that such practices can affect employment opportunities and wages for American workers.

Kavita, a resident of Soso village in Ramgarh district of Jharkhand, is making a round on social media after she finished a 1,600-meter physical trial run barefoot in a saree. She completed the trial run in just six minutes, before the 10-minute limit, in order to qualify for a Home Guard job. Kavita lined up alongside other candidates during the trial run organised which was organized by a local training academy ahead of the official selection drive. She ran while wearing a saree and crossed the finish line in just six minutes. All the onlookers and trainers were shocked to see her performance.

The final selection race is still remaining. We hope Kavita clears that as well. Even if she doesn’t, the government should give this woman a job.

Journey of Kavita
Three years ago, Kavita's world was upended when her husband, Deepak Mahto, died after a long battle with illness. Left to raise two young children on her own, she took up a job as a private security guard to make ends meet. But Kavita wasn't content to simply get by, she began working toward a government job that could offer her family long-term stability. Determined to clear the police or home guard recruitment exams, she adopted a punishing routine: rising at 4:00 am each day to train on country roads, often in her regular clothes since she couldn't afford running shoes or proper athletic gear. She made sure to finish her practice before her children woke up for the day. Currently, Kavita is gearing up for the Jharkhand Home Guard recruitment physical test, set to be held between October 24 and November 5. The recruitment drive is aiming to fill 284 posts in Ramgarh district, with half of the seats reserved for women. Widows and divorcees like Kavita stand to benefit from an additional 5 per cent reservation built into the drive. Also read: VIDEO: Car plunges into sinkhole on Chennai's OMR after road caves in near Tidel Park
Netizens react to video
After the video surfaced on social media, netizens were surprised to witness Kavita sunning in a saree and completing her race in just 6 minutes. Police sources, however, pointed out that utilities running underground, including Metro Water pipelines, had already been shifted before Metro work began in the area, effectively ruling out a burst water pipeline as the cause. According to officials, the collapse stemmed from the failure of an ageing prestressed cement concrete sewage line, 2.2 metres wide and buried roughly 3 metres beneath the road surface. A joint in the pipeline is believed to have given way, triggering soil erosion beneath the surface that eventually caused the road to cave in. The incident has once again drawn scrutiny to the condition of the OMR stretch, which has seen a string of similar cave-ins over the past few months. The Chennai incident triggered concern among commuters and social media users, particularly those who regularly travel along the stretch in the city.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on Thursday for countries around the world to tackle cross-border cyber frauds and the rising menace of deepfakes, pushing for coordinated action among governments, technology companies, telecom players and banks to stop such scams before they ever reach the people. Modi noted that India has gained substantial experience in combating cyber frauds over the years and expressed willingness to share these learnings with the world. He cautioned that cyber frauds and cyber crimes do not respect national boundaries and stressed that technology can only scale effectively when people trust it.

"We are also seeing what a big challenge deepfakes have become," Modi said, adding that countries need to work together on a global framework to address such emerging threats. "Therefore, it is necessary that we work on a global framework for this. Governments, technology companies, telecom operators, and financial institutions - all will need to connect with this framework. I urge the GSMA and telecom operators across the world: come, let us create a global mechanism that can stop such fraud before it reaches the people," Modi said. He further emphasised that as telecom networks and digital platforms continue their rapid growth, bolstering the security architecture around them is just as vital, with safeguarding phones and networks now a top priority. Modi reiterated that India's own experience in this space has been extensive, and the country remains open to sharing that knowledge globally.

In a wide-ranging discussion about India's first human spaceflight ambitions, Gaganyaan astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla opened up about the role of ISRO's humanoid robot, Vyomitra, which is being prepared for India's first crewed space missions. During the conversation, Shukla explained how far technology has advanced since the 1960s and drew comparisons to the early Soviet space program, where animals were sent to space ahead of humans. Shukla pointed out that the processing power in a modern mobile phone has become far better and more efficient as compared to the Apollo missions' computers, which carried astronauts to the Moon and back. He said the technology that we possess today was not available then. Speaking about the Soviet space program, where animals were sent to space ahead of humans, Shukla said that at the moment, ISRO doesn't need to rely on animal testing the way earlier space programs did. Instead, that role will be filled by Vyomitra, a heavily instrumented humanoid robot. "The technology that we have today was not available then. Actually, to highlight, you know, the kind of processing power your mobile phone holds today is more than what the mission computer for the Apollo mission had, which took humans around the moon and brought them back. You know, so that is where we stand today. So that is the kind of difference in what we can achieve today. And you are familiar with Moore's law: every two years, the size of chips will keep reducing over a period of time. So I think that today we don't need to experiment on animals to understand what is happening in space," Shukla said. "The Vyomitra, the humanoid robot that he is talking about, in the initial test missions will carry a humanoid robot which is very heavily instrumented. Instrumented to collect data, to collect the temperature, the pressure, the vibrations, the sound- all of that it is going to collect and give us a very good idea of what the internal environment of the capsule is going to be like. So that, if required, we can make some changes, and we have very good information, or, you know, the introductory talk or the presentation talked about data being intelligible, you know, data being refined so that you can use it effectively. So this is what Vyomitra is going to do. It is going to give us good, solid data which we can use to refine our further missions and have very good confidence in the systems when actual missions are going to space," Shukla added. Also read: Space experience reinforced belief in ‘higher power’: Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla
Three uncrewed missions before any astronaut flies
The interviewer clarified Vyomitra's role further, describing her as a humanoid robot in female form, developed across various ISRO centres. According to the plan outlined, ISRO intends to fly three uncrewed Gaganyaan missions, with no astronauts on board, before any Gaganyatri, including Shukla himself, is cleared to fly. "A robot will go to space inside the capsule, and the robot will do all the testing. And once all of those go flawlessly, only then will we put our astronauts... in space," the interviewer explained, describing it as ISRO's methodical approach to human spaceflight. The conversation then turned to the training journey that transforms a fighter pilot into an astronaut, a path Shukla has walked, training across Star City in Russia, as well as facilities in the US, Europe, and Japan. Asked what it takes, Shukla didn't mince words about the scale of the undertaking. Shubhanshu Shukla said, "On an average, if I have to say, it takes about five years for any astronaut to fly to space, not just from India, whether it is from Russia, whether it is from US. This is the kind of time period that it takes to prepare an astronaut to go to Space. And the reason it takes so much of time is once you are up there, you are by yourself. There is no help available, you are trying to create and sustain life in an environment wherein it should not exist, you know, there is no reason to support life out there. It really widens your horizon to understand how things are happening, how things are being done in different domains, in different disciplines and many times what happens is that you learn something from another discipline and you find that it is suitably applied to some other discipline that you were very used to. So that is the reason that it takes a lot of time to prepare as astronauts. It took us also about five years before we flew and it will be the same story for any future astronauts who are going to fly. It will take this much of time."

In a strongly worded open letter, former judges have expressed grave concern over a sustained campaign to undermine the Election Commission, judiciary and other constitutional institutions.

The signatories have questioned allegations of “vote theft” without supporting evidence, warning that repeatedly branding constitutional authorities as “thieves” and “compromised” risks eroding public trust in democracy.

“Criticism of institutions is a democratic right. Denigration is not,” the letter states.

Defending the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the signatories emphasised that it is a legally established exercise aimed at ensuring clean and accurate voter lists.

“Trust is the currency of democracy,” the letter warns, cautioning that attempts to delegitimise elections could fuel unrest and embolden anarchic elements.— Kanchan Gupta 🇮🇳 (@KanchanGupta) October 8, 2026

‘Some take their cues from beyond our borders’
“Unrest begins with a narrative. Anarchic and fringe elements then occupy the vacuum. Some are homegrown. Some take their cues from beyond our borders,” read the strongly worded letter. They also warned against repeatedly branding constitutional authorities as “thieves”, “puppets” and “compromised”. “We write because, in moments like these, silence is no longer a neutral choice. Our concern is grave. India’s constitutional bodies are under sustained attack,” said the ex-judges. “The Election Commission of India stands at the centre of this assault. Even the higher judiciary, which we hold in high esteem, and statutory agencies have not been spared,” the letter added.
‘Calculated campaign driven by vested political interests’
The attacks are not reasoned critique, the former judges said. “This appears to be a calculated campaign driven by vested political interests, with little regard for the potentially devastating consequences of destabilising the world’s largest democracy,” the former judges wrote. “Trust is the currency of democracy,” the judges warned, adding, “Criticism of institutions is a democratic right. Denigration is not.” The letter included sharp jabs at the Congress and the Cockroach Janta Party without naming either. “Allegations of vote theft are made at press conferences, not before courts. When the Commission seeks a sworn declaration, none is filed. Electronic Voting Machines are blamed only after defeat. Victories won on the same machines go unquestioned. A party that governed this nation for over five decades now claims that the very system which elected it is rigged,” the letter read. “Activist outfits with a long record of selective litigation lend these claims a veneer of legality. They file petitions, one after the other. They seldom file proof. The courtroom becomes a stage, and when the judgment is delivered, it is criticised whenever it does not serve their interests,” it added. The signatories include former judges of the Supreme Court, Chief Justices of high courts, and others. Former Supreme Court Judges Justice Hemant Gupta, Justice Pankaj Mittal are among those who signed.
‘SIR a legally established exercise’
They also defended the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, saying it is a legally established exercise aimed at ensuring clean and accurate voter lists. “Intensive revisions have been carried out repeatedly since the first general elections. The last SIR was completed about two decades back. No one called those revisions a conspiracy,” the letter read. They said decades of migration and urbanisation had made corrections to electoral rolls necessary, adding that “a clean roll protects every genuine vote”. “The protocols have not changed. The rules were not written in 2025. They were written in 1950. The uproar over SIR appears both sudden and remarkably convenient,” the letter further read.
‘Do not amplify unverified claims,’ ex-judges urge media
They appealed to the media not to amplify unverified claims, saying. “A headline is not evidence, and repetition does not make an allegation the truth.” They also urged citizens to “verify the facts before acting on them.” “Do not let anyone convince you that your vote is meaningless. Your vote is your voice, and it matters.” The former judges urged political parties to contest elections without seeking to delegitimise them and to take complaints to the Election Commission and courts with evidence.

As Indian Coast Guard ships and aircraft prepare to stage a mock rescue off Paradip with observers from 30 countries, the force's chief said a new satellite could change how quickly India finds vessels in trouble. Director General Paramesh Sivamani called the MEO LUT satellite a "game changer" that will help identify ships in distress in a shorter time frame. He spoke after chairing the 24th National Maritime Search and Rescue (NMSAR) Board Meeting. The NMSAR Board, constituted in 2002, is the apex national committee that reviews how prepared India is for maritime search and rescue across the 4.6 million sq km Indian Search and Rescue Region. The Coast Guard is the national coordinating authority and runs rescue operations through three Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres and 36 Maritime Rescue Sub-Centres along the coast and in Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The meeting brought together the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, ISRO, INCOIS, DGMA, DGCA, IMD, Customs, Coastal Police, state fisheries departments, port authorities, maritime boards and coastal states and Union Territories. In his address, Sivamani said the future of maritime rescue depends on advanced technology, real-time information sharing and close coordination between agencies. He called for better vessel tracking, stronger distress-alert management, data-driven decisions and faster mobilization of assets. He also said lessons from past missions and joint exercises must translate into greater readiness. The Board discussed strengthening national and international SAR frameworks, since maritime emergencies cross borders.
Fishermen and beach safety
Sivamani said technology would be used to improve search and rescue, particularly for the large number of man-overboard cases on fishing vessels. "The fishermen constitute the eyes and ears of us out at sea, so their safety has to be ensured," he said. The Board also discussed beach drownings. "The sea is a very dynamic domain, and not everyone can master it, especially our youth who venture out and are not aware of the tidal patterns and currents," he said. “We have to endeavour to make the beaches safer. Every life matters.” On the MEO LUT satellite, he said: “It will be a game-changer for us.
How did DogeDesigner trigger the India-Starlink row?
Musk's October 7 comments came in response to a post shared by DogeDesigner that cited government data on India's connectivity gap. The post claimed that 11,256 listed Indian villages still lacked 4G internet coverage as of May 2026. The supplied material notes that these figures had not been independently confirmed.Musk responded by alleging that Starlink was being blocked by unnamed "oligarchs" seeking to preserve what he called a "monopolistic chokehold" over India's people. "Unfortunately, we are being blocked by certain oligarchs to maintain their monopolistic chokehold on the Indian people. You can guess who they are …," Musk wrote.Musk has previously argued that "Starlink would help the least served in India, especially in rural areas."Also read | Musk alleges ‘oligarchs’ blocking Starlink in India, here is what we know so far
Musk denies Starlink terminals were active in India
The controversy also involved claims that Starlink terminals were being used near the Manipur-Myanmar border. Musk dismissed those claims, saying they were false and technologically impossible because Starlink's beams remain deactivated over India.Starlink is awaiting completion of India's regulatory and security requirements before commercial services can begin.
What has India said about Starlink's regulatory approval?
India's Ministry of Communications rejected suggestions that its satellite communications framework is discriminatory. According to a PIB statement, India has granted licences to three global mobile personal communications by satellite services using non-geosynchronous satellite orbits. All three licensees are required to meet security conditions before proceeding further. The government said security assessments for all three licensees are currently under way and that all three are broadly at the same regulatory stage. It described suggestions that India's regulatory framework was unfair or discriminatory as "baseless and misconceived".Also read | India responds to Elon Musk's 'oligarchs' claim over Starlink delay
Starlink says it has built India-specific infrastructure
Notably, at the India Mobile Congress 2026, Starlink Vice President for Business Operations Lauren Dreyer said the company had developed India-specific security controls and built 20 gateway sites in the country.Dreyer said Starlink had established controls at every layer to meet Indian security requirements and was keeping Indian users' data within India.

Starlink says it is ready for India
Musk’s comments came a little over a month after Starlink renewed its efforts to enter the Indian market. The company had struck a more measured tone at the India Mobile Congress in New Delhi. Lauren Dreyer, vice president of Starlink Business Operations, said the company had spent five years working with Indian regulators, telecom operators and the industry to prepare for its launch. “We’ve built our Starlink operations specifically for India in recognition of Indian security requirements and other regulations, establishing controls at every layer for India and keeping Indian user data within India,” Dreyer said at the pre-business day of the event. She said Starlink had already invested in India and built 20 gateway sites with hundreds of antennas. “We’ve established the operations to be ready to serve India,” she said. Dreyer also said Starlink has 11,000 satellites in orbit and operates in more than 170 countries. She highlighted the challenge of connecting the last mile and said Starlink could provide connectivity within minutes. “With Starlink, people can get connected within minutes, not years.” Also Read: US midterms 2026: Why the Latino vote could shape control of Congress
Government clearances still pending
Starlink holds a licence to provide satellite communication services in India, but commercial operations have not started as the company awaits remaining government clearances, including security approvals. The company already has Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) authorisation, while IN-SPACe authorised its first generation constellation in 2025. Spectrum assignment and security-related requirements are still pending. Starlink has also renewed its push for approval of a larger Gen 2 constellation, including direct-to-device capabilities. In February, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia reiterated that Starlink must meet all security clearance requirements before beginning services in India. Responding to a question about the Iran incident, where Starlink reportedly began operating without a licence, Scindia said the existing security framework applies equally to all operators.“We have a performance of what the security rules are. Any operator who complies with those rules will be allowed to operate in India,” the minister said.

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on completing 25 years as head of government, describing the unbroken tenure as a rare democratic achievement and a testament to the enduring confidence of the Indian people. In an official message, Tinubu marked the anniversary of Modi’s assumption of office as Chief Minister of Gujarat on October 7, 2001. After more than 12 years leading the western Indian state, Modi became Prime Minister of India in 2014 and has remained in the role continuously since. "A quarter-century of unbroken leadership is a rare achievement in any democracy. In the world’s most populous nation, it is a powerful testament to the enduring confidence the Indian people have placed in him,” Tinubu wrote. He praised Modi’s vision and commitment to development, noting the transformation of Gujarat and India’s emergence as one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies through advances in infrastructure, digital public goods, financial inclusion and innovation. Tinubu recalled Modi’s historic state visit to Abuja in November 2024, the first by an Indian prime minister in 17 years, during which Nigeria conferred on him the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger. That visit, he said, gave fresh impetus to cooperation in trade and investment, energy, defence and security, health, education and technology. The two nations, both large democracies and leading voices of the Global South, share a common commitment to a fairer and more representative international order, Tinubu added. He expressed confidence that under Modi’s continued leadership, bonds of friendship between the peoples of Nigeria and India would grow stronger, while wishing the Indian leader good health and success in the service of his country. The congratulatory message comes against the backdrop of a multidimensional partnership that has evolved well beyond historical goodwill. Bilateral trade, which once approached $15 billion, stood at about $9 billion in the 2025–26 financial year after recovering from a dip to $7.13 billion the previous year. Officials on both sides have voiced ambitions to restore and expand trade volumes, with energy cooperation, including renewed Indian purchases of Nigerian crude, remaining a key pillar alongside efforts to move beyond raw commodity exchanges toward value-added investment. More than 200 Indian companies operate in Nigeria across pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, power, construction, consumer goods, healthcare and services, creating significant local employment. India supplies roughly 40 percent of Nigeria’s pharmaceutical imports and over 90 percent in certain medicine categories, reinforcing its role as a major health-sector partner. India assisted in establishing key Nigerian military institutions, including the National Defence Academy in Kaduna and the Naval College in Port Harcourt, and continues to offer training slots under its technical and economic cooperation programmes. Both countries have had high-level engagements, including meetings on the sidelines of recent BRICS Summit 2026, have kept momentum alive on areas ranging from digital public infrastructure and fintech to agriculture, renewable energy and creative industries.

The Madras High Court made a striking observation on religion while upholding the Centre’s refusal to grant FCRA registration to a Zen meditation trust, saying Hinduism is inherently inclusive while Abrahamic faiths are exclusive in their theological claims. The court also warned that foreign-funded conversion activities could disturb India’s pluralistic character and even imperil national sovereignty. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday said Hinduism is inclusive, while the Abrahamic religions are inherently exclusive. The Madras High Court’s Madurai Bench said that radical Christian organisations are notorious for engaging in conversion activities. The court also warned that foreign-funded conversion activities could disturb India’s pluralistic character and even imperil national sovereignty.

A Division Bench of Justice G. R. India-Taiwan trade in the January-August period of 2026 has grown 61% from the trade data recorded in Jan-Aug 2025. Sharing the trade data, Stephen Hsu, Director General of the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Centre(TECC) in Chennai, highlighted that the Jan-Aug trade in 2025 was $8bn and that the first eight months of 2026 have already seen $12.9bn worth of trade. Hsu was speaking at the 115th ROC (Taiwan) National Day Reception in Chennai, attended by representatives from all the Southern Indian states. Over 350 Taiwanese companies have invested in India, creating more than 200,000 jobs. Approximately two-thirds of these Taiwanese companies are located in South India, particularly in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The event was attended by Members of Parliament, government officials, MLAs, academics, and business leaders from the region. Comparing the growing trade, Hsu pointed out that the total value was $12.5bn in all of 2025, while the first eight months of 2026 had already witnessed $12.9bn worth of trade. Based on this trend, he suggested that the total trade value in 2026 is likely to go beyond $15bn. He emphasised that Taiwan’s strengths in semiconductors, information and communications technology (ICT), artificial intelligence (AI), advanced manufacturing, and green-energy technologies complement India’s strengths in talent, market size, and manufacturing capabilities. By working together, Taiwan and India can build stronger and more resilient supply chains. Also Read: France protests: How a Gen Z school movement turned into a political war | The Verdict Touching upon the importance of educational exchanges between Taiwan and India, Hsu said there are 45 Taiwan Education Centres (TECs) across India, including 18 in South India, of which 12 are in Tamil Nadu. Since June 2026, TECC in Chennai has, for the first time, partnered with local universities to provide internship opportunities for Indian students. The program enables students to gain a better understanding of diplomatic work, participate in TECC activities, gain first-hand exposure to diplomatic practice, acquire practical experience, and broaden their international perspectives. "TECC in Chennai has so far recruited 20 interns, two of whom have expressed their aspiration to become Indian diplomats in the future", he added. Director-General Hsu said he was honoured to contribute to the development of young Indian talent, emphasising that “diplomacy is not only about governments; it is also about people.” Looking ahead, TECC Chennai’s core mission is to continue strengthening the IT (India & Taiwan) partnership. In his address, Chief Guest S. Vijayakumar, the head of the Indian Foreign Ministry's Branch Secretariat in Chennai, noted that bilateral relations between Taiwan and India have grown steadily in recent years, with economic and trade exchanges showing particularly significant progress. He emphasised that India's Act East Policy seeks to create greater synergies in areas including economy, technology, green energy, supply chains, and talent exchanges. He noted that Tamil Nadu enjoys highly favourable conditions for development and said that he had personally witnessed the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chennai's active efforts to promote exchanges in talent and other fields with stakeholders across the state. He therefore welcomed Director-General Hsu's vision of "Design from Taiwan, Make in Tamil Nadu" and expressed his strong support for its realisation in the region.

India-Taiwan trade reached $12.9 billion in the first eight months of 2026, up from $8 billion in the same period of 2025, as Taiwanese investment and cooperation in areas including semiconductors, ICT, AI and advanced manufacturing continue to expand.
